It's got a bigger screen—2.8 inches—which equates to a slightly bigger handset. It does push email using the Blackberry system, but its EDGE connection feels downright pokey next to the EVDO we see on Verizon's Q. Another gripe we have is that you have to pull the battery cover off the Nokia to swap out its miniSD card. And good god, there's no camera! But that 320 by 240 screen, while delivering the same pixel count as the Q, looks much better. And that Symbian 60 OS runs nice and tight, way faster than the Moto Q's Windows Mobile 5. Oh yes, this phone is only $149 from Cingular now.

Unless you're really attached to Windows Mobile 5, yea, I'd pick up the Nokia E62 over the Motorola Q any day.

<![CDATA[Nokia E62 Hits U.S. On September 29]]>

For some odd reason, the Canadians have had the Nokia E62 for about week, but only now (well, in a few weeks) are we Americans getting the smartphone. Say thank you to Cingular Wireless for letting us get our hands on this EDGE-capable, Push e-mail-ready businessman's new best friend. The E62 sports a 2.8-inch widescreen display that displays 16 million colors! 16 million, people!

The E62 comes with a paltry 90MB of built-in memory, but its miniSD slot should negate that limitation. It's also pre-loaded with plenty of bloatware that junior execs love so much, like dozens of apps that accomplish the same task (how many IM programs do you really need?).

Look for the Nokia E62 on or around September 29 for "as low as" $149 if you sign a new contract.

<![CDATA[Nokia E62 at WES]]> The specifications of the Nokia E62 are pretty much still the same save for added WiFi and USB support, but now Blackberry Cool has found out the smartphone will be released this summer through Cingular. It will also be compatible with BlackBerry through the "BlackBerry Connect" software for non BlackBerry devices.

Canadian readers can note there are rumors that Nokia's been talking to Rogers about launching it through their channels. What's with Canada anyway? We name our wireless companies something cool like "Sprint" or "Cingular", you guys name yours after dumpy, balding middle managers.

<![CDATA[Nokia E62 Details Revealed]]> nokia_e61_cell_phone_fcc.jpg

Just last week we told you about how the FCC had finally approved Nokia's E61, a.k.a. The Blackberry/Treo Killer, for sale to the US market. If you've already put it on your list of must-buy gadgets, you might want to check out Nokia's E62 which is basically a tweaked version of the E61. If neither one's on your list yet, perhaps this partial list of specs will prod you:

  • runs on Symbian 9.1 and S60 3.0
  • both GPRS and EDGE for data
  • GSM bands 850/1900
  • Bluetooth 1.2
  • screen is 240x320, 256,000 colors, TFT
  • miniUSB instead of Nokia's usual PopPort
  • Push email (like the Blackberry)
  • USB Mass Storage Mode, so you can mount your phone as a hard drive
  • QuickOffice for viewing/editing Word/Excel/Powerpoint
  • Screen Export feature lets you run Powerpoint presentations off the E62 with compatible projectors
  • Positioning and Navigation apps that work with Bluetooth GPS devices

Lots of other nice features but sadly the E62 is missing the E61's support for 3G and WiFi. Anyone know why that is? Did Nokia cut an exclusive deal with a provider that made them take it out? 3G/WiFi-less aside, it's still a solid business phone with a great UI and should still do well when it launches.
