Today, Acer President Gianfranco Lanci made their plans clear by announcing that they were, in fact, releasing a WM6 smarphone by the end of this year or possibly early next year.

They also announced that E-10 would ditch their PDA business and focus exclusively on smartphones, with the new Acer release headed for sale through wireless carriers (in opposition to E-10's direct to retail roots). Whether Acer can muscle its way into the crowded cellphone market remains to be seen—but it is definitely a logical move for a major PC maker at this point. [CNET]

<![CDATA[ETEN's Glowfish M800 May Steal Smartphone Crown]]> usethgi.jpgThe chaps over at Pocketinfo.nl have just obtained word on ETEN's Glowfish M800, the successor to the X800. From the spec sheet, boy, does it pack quite a punch. The M800 will have:

A 500MHz processor, 256MB ROM, two cameras, VGA display, HSDPA/UMTS, GPS and a standard stereo headset connector. The HTC TyTN II should look scared; the M800 hits stores in November and will be priced between $844-$886. Pound for pound, ETEN's offering stands above the HTC TyTN II on all but screen size. The proofs in the pudding; we'll reserve judgment till we get our grubby hands on the potential smartphone sire. [Pocketinfo.nl via Mobility Site]

<![CDATA[Glowfiish X800: There's a 'Two-Eyes' Joke in there Somewhere]]>

But it's up to you to make it, not me - the reason being that E-TEN's latest Windows Mobile 6 smartphone has your usual two cameras. One is an auto-focus two megapixel version at the back for hi-quality snaps and vids, and a VGA camera on the front for video calling. The important thing, however, is that it has 3.5G connectivity with HSDPA/WCDMA and Wi-Fi, integrated Mobile Office suite and a 640 x 480 pixel screen. Full list of specs (insert four-eyes joke here, if you want) after the jump.

It's not much of a looker though.

<![CDATA[Eten Glofiish M700 Smartphone: Purty and Phat]]> Take a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and add GPS and WiFi, and you have the way-cool Eten glofiish M700 smartphone, the next high-end quad-band GSM/EDGE trinket from the Taiwanese phonemeisters. Satisfy that entertainment jones with its FM radio and take pictures of it all with a 2-megapixel camera, and then store all that on a microSD flash drive.

Although it inherits the GPS and WiFi from its X500 predecessor, it's the first from Eten to have that snazzy sliding QWERTY keyboard. What more could you ask for? Less weight, for one thing, and it's fat, too. This paperweight tips the scales at 5.8 ounces, and although it's only about as long as a 100mm cigarette, its 3/4" thickness could use a bit of Slimfast. Neat-looking phone, though. Maybe we'll see one around here sometime.

<![CDATA[E-TEN X500 is the World's Thinnest Pocket PC Phone]]> At 15.5mm (0.61 inches), the E-TEN X500 is the thinnest Windows Mobile Pocket PC edition phone so far, from any company. The phone runs on a 400MHz Samsung processor, has EDGE, 802.11b/g, GPS support, a 2-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth 2.0. There's no slide-out keyboard, unfortunately, so that puts this phone in the same category as the HTC Artemis. No pricing yet, but the X500 should be out in November.

If you're interested in a device with built-in GPS like the Artemis, check out the review and the gallery.

<![CDATA[E-TEN M600+ Unveiled, Skype Compatible]]> The E-TEN M600+, an upgrade of the original M600, brings with it some useful improvements: "more memory, higher resolution camera and improved Bluetooth."

The specs on the M600+ are a 400Mhz Samsung processor, 256MB of memory, 2.0-megapixel camera, the Windows Mobile 5 push email software update, WiFi, GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth 2.0, 2.8" display, and SDIO expansion. Since the original was Skype compatible, this should be also. The improved specs should make call quality even better.

The only availability is "Soon", and expect the price to be higher than the M600, obviously.

<![CDATA[E-TEN G500 Reviewed (Verdict: GPS Goodness)]]> eten_G500.jpgMobileTechReview fills us in on the new E-TEN convergence smartphone, the G500. With Windows Mobile 5, 128 MB ROM, 64MB RAM, Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, GPS and a MiniSD slot, this baby does just about everything you could want in a portable device. Well, everything except WiFi, which you could add using the MiniSD slot. Compared to other similar WM5 phones, the E-TEN is the winner on roughly half the performance benchmarks tested.

The only things MobileTechReview docked points for were the lack of EDGE or other high speed mobile data protocol, and the low battery life when using the GPS. If you're going to be using this as your navigation unit in your car, you'll have to use the included car adapter to power it past the 2.5 hours of usage E-TEN claims.

The estimated price is $550.

<![CDATA[E-Ten Pathfinder GPS, TV and Radio, Too]]> Here's a GPS device by E-Ten with a nicely-pixeled 3.5" 320x240 LCD display, and once this Pathfinder has helped to find your way, you can watch TV on it and listen to the radio, too. In fact, this is almost an Origami tablet, running Windows CE 5.0, with a 400MHz Samsung 2440 processor onboard. Nothing on TV or the radio? There's plenty of room inside for MP3s, where you can store a few on its internal 128MB of flash memory plus a miniSD slot to store lots more.

So far it'll only be available in Korea, where DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) TV is available. Someday maybe we ll have such things in the United States.

<![CDATA[E-TEN G500 Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone with GPS Announced]]> E-TEN has announced the G500, a Windows Mobile 5 smartphone with a built-in GPS receiver that foregoes any external antenna. Using a quad-band GSM radio—which means it should work just about everywhere in the world—the G500 also supports Traffic Message Channel (TMC), a service that allows updates regarding traffic congestion to be broadcast to the device so that you could route around the snarls. Unfortunately, we don't know of a TMC service in the US that doesn't need an FM or satellite radio receiver, so we doubt this service would work in the States (but congratulations to the rest of the GSM world).

E-TEN says to expect the G500 in all markets this month for an as-yet-unannounced price. The last of high-speed connectivity options will lessen its gleam for some, but for many the good-sized, 2.8-inch display and built-in GPS functions will let it kill two birds with one Tron-like stone.
