What's lane assist? Also, how does this compare with the 880? Is it that the 880 has voice control but no lane assist, and these have lane assist, but no voice control?

And why can't Garmin offer a coherent series of products like every other company instead of a million different models with slightly different advantages/disadvantages?

@frigg: Lane assist tells you what lane you need to be in for a junction. I cope fine without it.

@Dabamash: Thanks.

Even if it's not necessary, given that it exists, why not add it to all models? It sounds like it could universally improve all directions. Otherwise, it sounds like they're saying the 845R model is real good about telling you about right turns while the 845L model is real good about alerting you to left turns.

@Pixelantes Anonymous: Get one with the GarminLock. You need a pin or have the unit within 50metres of a spot you choose, or it won't unlock unless you send it to Garmin. Or take the time to try every possible combination, which most people won't b/c it times out.

And still look like total crap. What's with the big MENU button? Where is that on a TomTom? That's right, the TomTom is busy showing you useful information instead of tying up your screen with a nice large blue menu button.

TT already has lane assist, though they weren't the first, either. IQ routing is also fantastic on the TomTom.

TT has also had voice input for a while. There has been a Mic built right into the TomTom for as long as I can remember. I've had both a GO700 and a GO720 and they both have a Mic for voice input.

@Jack Doyle: You do realize that the menu button is as big or smaller than the street name, arrival time, and/or the "turn in" distance. But you're right, that 1/4 inch of space could be better used showing where you came from/just passed, b/c when you use GPS, it's so you know where you've been, not where you're going.

@wjousts: On the TomTom you just tough the main part of the screen to get the menu. It's senseless to actually have a button that takes up precious real-estate on such a small screen.

@Jack Doyle: On a Garmin, doing that brings up the option to save your current location as a "favorite" or "Waypoint". Comes in handy when you want to remember where you parked in Brooklynn.

Updated Maps are NEVER part of your navigation system. They always have to be bought separately.

I have a Navigon and got a cheap 12 Months, every quarter update for just 20€ (Europe Maps).

And that was a smashing offering, considering, that usually, a map update will set you back about 100€, EACH TIME.
