At our local Walmart they actually cleared away space in the middle of the men's clothing section for a Guitar Hero display.

Their CD section is not that robust to begin with. Remember kids, CDs are as close to lossless as we can get (sans vinyl) and you can rip them to whatever codec you please. We need to stop going backwards in regards to audio fidelity.

Gamble now? Maybe. Bet on the future? Yes. Walmart is the one retailer that can cement a standard of technology into our lives. By promoting Blu-ray, they'll make sure the average American picks up a player sometime in the next couple of years. With a new format solidly in place this ensures that Walmart doesn't lose out on tons of business with the movie industry going all digital. This way, the average American will still go to a brick-and-mortar retailer to pick up movies. It's good for their business in the long run.

Also, let's not forget this is Walmart and they probably spent millions of dollars analysing a project of this scope and determined that it would be in their best interest. They're not idiots. Let's not pretend that we lowly Gizmodo readers can make major capital budgeting decisions for the largest company in the world.

They're not 'getting rid' of DVDs, they're just going to pile them all in those big cardboard bins in the middle of the aisles.

Walmart is getting paid to make more room. Seeing the DVD section shrink and blu-ray grow will put the idea of upgrading into people's minds. "Hurry up and upgrade of your DVD will be obsolete." says the artificial little voice in the back their minds. I tell that little voice to take a look at the outrageous price of the blu-ray titles and he shuts right up.

I recently checked out the Blu-Ray section in Walmart, and it was pretty pathetic. It only had 2 racks worth of space, and over have of the slots were empty. I personally don't see the point in buying blu-ray movies anyway unless they're newer action movies. My dvd of Grandma's Boy doesn't need to be in high-def for it to be funny.

Meh, it fits. Target slaughters them on DVDs, and Walmart has better game selection that Target.

Wal-mart can't actually eliminate DVD or CD space, the currently contract ALL that out to a company. The company has a contract in 5 year intervals, and they just had it renewed last year. They can't however scale it back, but they won't reduce it by large amounts.

BTW: That picture used is at least 5 years old. They stopped wearing Shmocks(sp) 2 years go, stopped using "rollback" signing WAY before that. :P

Maybe the reason Wal-mart doesn't sell any CDs is because they only sell edited CDs. One mistake I'll never make again, and they are pretty stringent about not taking CD returns
