He wasn't impressed, to say the least. Perhaps the fact that it has been hacked and someone added a Sega Genesis emulator will make him change his mind.

But then, that's nowhere where you haven't been before, so probably he won't give a damn either. And I won't blame him. [Joystiq]

<![CDATA[PlayStation Emulation Comes to Palm Pre, Runs Faster Than on iPhone]]> The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.Jailbreaking emulation legend ZodTTD has started the ball rolling on Pre gaming by installing his PlayStation emulator, psx4all, on the smartphone—and while there are kinks to be worked out, he says it runs even faster than on iPhone.

There's no denying the Pre has several huge advantages over the iPhone family when it comes to gaming, especially the hardware keyboard, and it looks like it won't be lacking in the graphical department, either. The emulation is still in the early stages; there's no sound and he hasn't figured out the screen scaling yet, but this little demo of Wipeout XL looks incredibly smooth.

ZodTTD says a fuller, more polished version of psx4all for the Pre should be coming soon, and with any luck, this'll be the first hurdle on the way to a substantial gaming community for the Pre. [ZodTTD via Engadget]

<![CDATA[PSP 3000 Homebrew is Here Now]]> Although the Datel Blue Tool boots your PSP 300 into service mode, it's not a real service mode that let's you install and run homebrew. This latest TIFF Exploit, however, is one step closer.

The video above shows (turn the sound off if you're at work) shows developers "Davee" and "Bubbletune" using a TIFF exploit on 5.03 firmware, placing the PSP into the correct state that it can eventually run custom homebrew apps. It's not quite finished, but it should be close now. [Slashdot via Technabob]

Update: Nevermind! Looks like Chickhen, the homebrew enabler, is available now. Thanks karltpb.

<![CDATA[PXP-900 Is a PSP That Plays Tons of Emulation Games]]> If you're a fan of the PSP look and form factor but eschew the 3D graphics for NES/SNES and Gameboy-level sprites, the PSP-900 is $90 worth spending.

The thing has a 4.3-inch screen, almost the same amount of face and shoulder buttons as the PSP, but it only supports "NES, Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Super Famicom, SEGA MegaDrive and some sort of 32-bit ROM." No actual PSP playing here—but that's not the point, is it?

Then again, if you already HAVE a PSP, you can always just hack it and play emulation games that way. [Chinagrabber via Technabob via Slashgear]

<![CDATA[The GAME-800: A Fatty Pocket Emulator]]> The GAME-800 is just another one of those direct from manufacturer PMP all-in-one pocket devices. And maybe it's just because I was a corpulent kid, but I find the design quite charming.

Emulating NES/Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Super Famicom and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis titles, the GAME-800 is a crudely controlled but effective looking pocket emulator with a 3.5-inch screen and 4GB of expandable storage. It also doubles as an MPEG4 player, eBook reader (with Chinese/English text to speech) and a low fidelity camera.

The GAME-800 is available now for an $80 import. [China Grabber via technabob]

<![CDATA[Oppo Muse G11: The Chinese PMP With A D-Pad And Classic Game Emulators]]> There are enough crappy Chinese MP3 players to fill a toxic Shenzhen waste dump many times over, but the Oppo Muse G11, with its traditional d-pad and promise of 8-bit glories emulated: I want.

While some of the photos here clearly show a real device, you can see that modesty has inclined lil' Oppo to only be shown from the rear, save for in chaste rendering form. So hopefully the d-pad and traditional SNES/PlayStation four-button config makes it to the final stages of production. News today is pricing: 1099 yuan, or $160. That only appears to buy you a paltry 4GB, but throwing together a true emulation platform along with some pedestrian MP3 playing capabilities into decent-looking swivel-screen hardware doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. <![CDATA[Yobo FC3 Plus Plays NES, SNES and Genesis Cartridges]]> We may take the system for granted now, but your inner 10-year-old is simply amazed by the Yobo FC3 Plus. A console that's fully compatible with NES, SNES and Sega Genesis titles, you can finally put those old cartridges to use without filling your home theater setup with unsustainable levels of boxes and wires. Including an NES-compatible light gun and two controllers, the FC3 Plus is a smart eBay purchase for the time being, going for about $50 from various independent retailers. Read on for a full unboxing.

The controllers look only tolerable and they use proprietary connectors (so no plugging in your own), but that lightgun appears to be a fantastic recreation of the original. [eBay via Unplggd and Videogame Central]

<![CDATA[iControlpad, For the iPhone with PSP Envy]]> While the do-everything touchscreen of the iPhone seemed like the perfect solution for game emulation, it's tough to top real buttons when it comes to mashing away at Track & Field. So the iControlpad attaches to the iPhone and gives it a PSP makeover. The prototype (pictured here) was pieced together from the internals of an old SNES pad, but the final version that will go on sale is promised to be "much more sleek and fitting." We're just hoping they're ready to make an iPhone 2 version ASAP. [iControlpad via BGR]

<![CDATA[SNES Emulator Running on a Cowon Q5W]]> This is a Cowon Q5W PMP that's been rigged to hook up to an original Playstation controller and run a SNES emulator. On the one hand, it's sweet to see SNES games being played on a PMP. On the other hand, this is a honking $550+ PMP, so you'd probably be pretty pissed if it didn't have the juice to do this. In any case, neat! I'll take SNES emulation anywhere and everywhere. [Anything But iPod via Ubergizmo]

<![CDATA[snes4iphone v1.0.0 Tested (Verdict: Playable)]]> ZodTTD's snes4iphone v1.0.0 was recently released and it works surprisingly well. After a few games of Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World it's obvious this emulator has come a long way. While in-game audio is still missing, background music plays fine. Gameplay is fairly smooth with frameskip enabled, and the emulator supports landscape and portrait display modes. Perhaps the best feature is the well implemented save system. Basically, you're not going to beat any crazy speed runs using snes4iphone, but it's a nice distraction for the bus. [ZodTTD via BGR]

<![CDATA[Want a 60GB PS3? Better Buy it Soon]]> Sony's just confirmed that they are out of supplies of the 60GB PlayStation 3 in their warehouses, which means that the only place left to get that specific version of the console is on store shelves.

If you wanted a PS3 that can do hardware emulation of PS1 and PS2 games, you'd better get one now, or else some of your old games may no longer work—or at least until Sony adds support for it in upcoming software upgrades. Something tells me we may be seeing these on eBay in a couple months. [PCWorld]

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's Portable Emulator]]> Everyone's favorite game console mad mod genius, Ben Heck, has a new project, and it's something that you and I might actually get a chance to play with for a change. Instead of a one-off like the Xbox 360 Laptop, he's designing the case for the GamePort, a handheld emulator designed to play retro games.

So he's designed it for a reputable company rather than just for fun, so we should be able to buy it, right? Well… maybe. According to the GamePort site, "the company that would have distributed the GamePort in stores perished after legal problems. Several other options are being discussed, including selling directly online." Awesome. Not exactly something to fill us with confidence, but who knows, maybe it'll go up for sale at some point.

<![CDATA[Sony Updates PS Store, Adds PSP and PS3 Cross-Support for PSone Games]]> Remember that PSP and PS3 update we told you about earlier last month? The one that enabled you to share PlayStation One game saves between your PS3 and your PSP? Well, Sony's finally gone and enabled it, you know, officially.

The handful of compatible titles are: "2Xtreme, Crash Bandicoot, Destruction Derby, Jet Moto, Jumping Flash, MediEvil, Rally Cross, Syphon Filter, Tekken 2 and WipeOut." If you've already purchased this for the PSP, you can re-download them for the PS3 for free. Now for your scheduled PSP licking.

The first three are downloadable, but unless you're a developer or you want to hop on bittorrent, the last one is a bit tougher.

<![CDATA[Zune on Linux: Done. Kinda.]]> If you're a Linux user and want to get in on all the Microsoft Zune magic—yeah right—here's a way how. The solution involves VMware and allows you to have a virtual machine running Windows inside your Linux, which then lets you run the Zune software to sync up your Zune.

The only catch is that you need to remove your USB 2.0 driver from Linux before you sync, which means you get to transfer all your songs at USB 1.1 speeds. Nice. This isn't optional—as of right now—and if you don't do this you'll get a nice BSOD in your VMWare window for your troubles. Happy Zunixing.
