I guess it depends on how good this device is as an MP3 player. Most people can survive with just 4gb of MP3 space, though - it is only weirdos like me that need a ridiculous amount of space.

Is it possible this is all a conspiracy with Sony paying Palm to keep a competing format out of their player so Sony can release the Sony Pre-CLIÉ with a Memory Stick slot? Oh, okay -- maybe not.

I think 8GB is plenty. I mean I think its safe to say that MOST people have an iPod in today's world or atleast most people who would buy a product like this does. So other then pictures, most of your media is probably going to be on your iPod.

IMO the lack of expandability will hit the Pre eventually though unless they have some kind of convenient apps to offload files to some other device on the fly and on the go.

@mwinfie: That's kind of its Achilles heal, the fact that you'd have this phone AND an iPod, and why the iPhone, which goes both ways, has that as an advantage.

The 8 GB limitation would only seem to matter if it's also used for music and movies. Which, if it's not, is reason enough to get something else. I have to say, I think the PRE is looking like a sweet looking phone. But since I like the iPhone's music and movie functions, that to me is WAY more important than utilitarian functions like cut and paste. And also why I think memory capacity on the iPhone is more of an issue than on the PRE. (I'm waiting for a 32 GB next generation iPhone to upgrade from my version 1 iPhone cause I really would appreciate the extra capacity).

I think it depends on what you use your phone for. If it doubles as your mp3 player, then 8GB probably won't cut it. Otherwise, I would think it would be plenty.

@cayton: i converted my music from mp3 to aac, all 192 or 128 kbps mp3s to 96 kbps aac, roughly the same quality but almost half the size, and lets be honest here, you can't really tell the difference using regular headphones.

@bishara: That's why I don't use regualar headphones. If you can't hear the difference between 192 and 96, your headphones don't cut it.

@Fractal the Meek: wait a minute.. wouldn't GOOD headphones allow you to listen to music better at a lower volume? I applied that concept where I work and invested in a 2.1 audio system with a big ol sub woofer for under the desk.. i can listen to my music at a volume that doesn't disturb anyone else and feel the benefit of full bass/bottom end along with the hi end.. don't have to turn it up loud.. i get the same thing from my Sony headphones.. 100bucks but damn if I don't have to turn em up to ear crushing levels.

@Skeetz: the concept you're referring to is the fletcher-munson curve which shows that volume is related to frequency response. Humans only hear frequency extremities - low and high frequencies - with sufficient volume. So at low volumes, not everything is equally soft, low and high frequencies seem disproportionally softer. Only when you turn the volume up does perceived frequency response flatten out. While you hear mid frequencies at low volume, the bass doesn't really show up until you pump up the volume.

So, adding something like a sub-woofer compensates for the fletcher-munson curve, adding more bass frequencies so you can hear a flatter response at a lower overall volume.
