In reply to WD's Ever-Smaller External Hard Drives Bring Better Security and Incremental Backups
I have an old 320GB My Passport and 250GB My Book. While the My Book is nothing special (Lacie drives just feel more sturdy to me for the same size category) the My Passport is a brilliant little drive. It solves the biggest hassle I had with my old externals, while the drive itself wasn't overly massive they were still bulky and in addition you had to carry a cable and brick with it (adding the problem of finding a free socket wherever you wanted to set up).

The Passport however fits comfortably in a coat pocket and all you need is a mini-USB and you're set. My only gripe with it (though this may have been resolved in the new passports) is that WD provide you with a very short USB cable for it and the drive is very fussy about using other mini-USB/USB extension cables. To date I've found one extension cable that works with it. So yeah minor issue otherwise they're actually pretty damn good.

I've owned way too many faulty Iomega products to ever consider buying anything else from them.

@Death: I have only owned one, the Zip. Now whenever I see anything iomega I don't even bother.

For a while, I've wanted a portable HDD that I could use on a laptop, but I was always on the fence about the quality of a lot of these things. Another issue was being able to easily open the enclosure up, and toss the drive if ever I wanted to upgrade, so I bought one of these...

    [eshop.macsales.com]

All it really requires is snapping the drive onto the chipset then screwing it in place. I very much prefer these things over prebuilt portable externals.

Seems fair enough, until you realize this is the same company that made and then STOPPED MAKING the Zip drive.

So yeah, sure, "pretty enough," "cheap enough" yada yada yada. But just wait until you buy one of these only to find out in 10, 20 years IOMEGA will STOP supporting them!

@frigg: Wait...you are getting at them for not supporting a technology that was passed by newer, better technologies that there was little to no demand for? Wow, just wow. Lets face it, the Zip Drive was doomed once portable hard drives like these became accessible.

@szrimaging: I'd say the SD card is the better replacement for the Zip drive than the portable hard drive. Only problem is that not everyone has a reader (I'm looking at you Apple).

@Shamoononon thanks Rocephin: Speaking of sperm, which in turn has a relationship with STD's, which can be a virus: Remember kids, always put a condom on your USB devices to lessen the chance of getting viruses. No, I did not just go off topic.

Why do you need to know if leather is sperm proof? Are you creating a leather condom? Or is it because you don't want it to get inside your HDD? (Which stores over a terabyte of porn)

"DIY Aged Leather-Bound Hard Drive Is One Way to Hide Your Porn Collection"

There were so many good words in that headline, Dan, such possibilities. "Leather-Bound". "Porn". "Hard". Even "DIY" (frequently, thank you!). So please forgive me for my disappointment at discovering this story was only about computer storage.

Eh....wrapped around an HD enclosure, it doesn't look so fantastic. I'd say it looks like a block of old cooked meat dragged out of the fridge.

I wonder how much hotter it makes that MyBook drive. Those things are crap enough as it is.
