This may be of interest for those thinking the stick is bland. I stumbled across this when I saw markman mention a full plexcover on his blog on cag. With some searching I found this post on shoryuken:

Considering Amazon's still selling both the 360 and PS3 SF4 models and has them in stock, it seems like no one's missed out on them yet.

I really like my normal madcatz fightstick. Some of the buttons are getting wonky now so I'm gonna have to replace them. It kinda makes me with I went for one of these bigger ones so I wouldn't have to bother.

@Dirtball Rotten: I could never use the Power Glove. It was too difficult, and had no turbo.

Besides, I could use the joystick on the Advantage during Bases Loaded and deliver some crazy-assed pitches.

Yeah, wireless is a terrible idea. You want as little input lag as possible, especially for online play.

I got my TE stick for 325 off craigslist, and my standard for 150. Now madcatz is releasing more :P GREAT

1) The reason the fightsticks aren't wireless is to prevent input lag during matches.

2) Word on SRK is that the SE fightsticks are dropping like flies. If you get one, it's bets for you to mod it as soon as possible.

I'd like the tournament stick, but think I may for for the cheaper version instead. Though I can't find either stick at their correct prices. Everywhere seems to have a huge markup, so I may need to wait a few weeks for prices to comedown a bit.

@falandil: FYI, according to some very loose-lipped sellers, first week in April is when the next round is due to ship. This is first-party information from a third-party source given to you by some random dude on the Internet, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

One thing I like about the SE is the ability to swap out the stick and buttons with true Sanwa parts. Classic JLFs that are essentially drop-in compatible with this stick run about $25. OBSF-30 buttons (also drop-in compatible) run about $2.80 each. In all honesty, going that route once you've outgrown the initial setup (and many will) is a great way to go.

The problem with these setups for me, as is the case for many other reviewers, is the spacing between the buttons and the joystick -- much too close for my taste. That said, ultimately, you cannot go wrong, especially as compared to stock controllers.

I'm going to be embarking on the building of my own wireless stick for PS3 using the above-mentioned parts and a Sixaxis PCB. I'm really looking forward to it. If you're interested, check out my Tweets @gtangjr, or via the #SFIV hash.

It's a easy-to-medium difficulty project that will likely cost the same as the MadCatz TE, but I don't have to wig out trying to find one, and I don't have to deal with eBay or Craigslist, paying more than it's worth.

@Gilbert: I plan on upgrading my SE eventually myself. If I decide that I don't like the size I can always move the guts of the stick to a new case. For my money the SE is the best value of you want to play SF IV.

@Gilbert: Seriously, Good Luck. Lizard Lick Amusements is WAY backed up on orders at the moment. Chad Marley, the owner of LL, has been posting regularly on the shoryuken.com forums to let his customers know of this. If you order now, it might take a couple weeks, or you can wait. MadCatz is actually making more of them. They only did a run of 4,000 last time...

As for wired vs. wireless, the reason it isn't wireless is because MadCatz didn't want to pay the Microsoft licensing fees to license the wireless tech. (The PS3 side would be simply that Bluetooth is hard...).

The point being that it's not a seamless experience the moment you're sending information to a server. There should be no discernible difference between wireless and non for this purpose.

Perhaps while playing the regular game, there might be an issue; but I assure you, only Matt Buchanan could tell.

@KobeBryunt: What I'm blabbering about is that any lag people are complaining about in terms of using a wireless solution for fighting games is significantly worse when playing online.

It's not likely there will be any noticeable additional lag (speaking in terms of the average player, mind you) with wireless sticks in normal non-interference-based conditions.

@OGHowie: No doubt, that is the case; and I totally agree. I'm also a big fan of options. At these prices, there is no reason a person shouldn't have the option to go wireless. Again, for the vast majority of us, the latency is moot.

That said, the more and more I play SFIV online, the shittier and shittier the multiplayer experience is. I think it's already gotten to that bursting point. There was one match I had where the fight started, the screen stuttered and without any visible intervention on my opponent's part, I all of a sudden had 40% of my life missing. It's as though he was playing against a still-standing character on his end.

My Internet connection is not the greatest by far, but by no means is it a slouch. I get 5000 down, 650 up, and a ping of about 20ms in my informal tests. In chatting with folks online, I'm told I have between four and five SFIV bars shown. Plus, I only play those with at least three bars. So for me, even though I've been playing SF for literally 19 years, even at the competitive level when I was a teenager, wireless is fine for this purpose. It's inexact no matter how we slice it.
