Ok, Overall, I like the update. Bigger font and icon sizes, dynamic themes are good (got the free Afrika theme the Japanese PSN store and bought the LBP theme.) Audio output options rock and I like the dimming of the background when folders are open.
What I don't like is the grey background tab for the friend's list. It totally wrecks the layout for any theme you have going on. Options to change the color or make the tab transparent with unaffected text would be nice. The new info bar is annoying. It can be turned off thank goodness. The PS3 logo at startup is stupid. If the person turning on the ps3 doesn't know that it's a ps3 they're about to use, then that person qualifies as the idiot of the year. It's redundant and totally unnecessary.
What I wanted to see but is sadly missing? We still can't log in as invisible (like Live) For user that have large libraries of mp3s or videos, there's no faster way to find a specific title other than scrolling.
We can't use preview videos already on the HDD as backgrounds for dynamic themes.
No cross game chat sucks too. But, overall I like the update.

It's been a staple of gaming systems for at least the last two generations. While it's not entirely necessary, it's mostly unobtrusive (that time would just be a black screen or some other loading screen anyway) and doesn't detract from the experience.
I saw the demo of this a couple weeks back and I just think Sony should outsource their UI design to Apple. Seriously do these guys have any idea what they are doing?
@soulfinger: You've never seen the travesty that is the NXE have you?
And this gets compared to an "Apple like design" more often than you'd apparently think.
Don't turn this into another adBox. Seriously, one of my favorite things about my PS3 is that I don't have to wait for ads to load while it boots. Do whatever you want in the store, I don't care, but don't make my PS3 boot into ads!
I HATE that the 3.0 update is entirely geared towards upselling items in the PS Store, without providing additional functionality. Games under the "games" menu links you to the Ps Store. Videos under the "videos" menu link you to the Ps Store. Buy new themes from the Ps Store. Buy new avatars from the Ps Store. How about updating the sorry excuse for a browser? How about allowing streamable web content? How about quick access to weather, stocks, news? Make this the center of our home media system as you always wanted it to be, or get the F out.
@spoondoggydog: Goddamnit I could not have said that better!! I have nightmares of fucking spokespeeps at sony rambling on about how "you won't need an xbox, dvd player, bluray player, etc etc" because "we are making the all-in-one definitive home theater component" and how we will be able to do cool stuff in PS Home and check our weather and ....... !!!!!!!! ARRGGHH!!! Give me widgets, or gadgets, or streaming!! I don't even know what I am saying because my head is about to explooOoOoDDEE!!
Meh. I guess I'm becoming something of a curmudgeonly old geezer but I still don't understand the fascination with things like avatars or even interfaces in general, and I *really* don't appreciate that Sony seems to force a software update on me literally every time I try to browse the downloads in PSN. These downloads should be optional, unless there are gamestopping bugs or security flaws being fixed.
I don't think I've used a new feature of any of these software updates since the day I bought my system like 2 years ago.
@Holy shirt! a talking squirrel! 「Tayler」: Yeah, it's annoying that you aren't allowed to play Warhawk unless you've updated the system. It's a way of controlling the software on the system. Pretty smart, actually.
@badasscat: Agreed, for the most part. I am an original owner, and when the update that allowed 1080i upconversion of standard DVDs came out I shit a brick. Also, I am a fan of the power save mode for the system and controllers, the chat rooms, the ability to background select tasks such as downloading, playing music, etc. They DO put good stuff in there. But I agree they need to disclose what the hell is in the update, AND give me the option without cock-blocking my use of the system.
You guys who are dismissing the PS3 as nothing more than a Blu-Ray player are missing out! I humbly suggest trying Wipeout HD (downloadable only on PSN), Ratchet and Clank, and Time Crisis 4. All of these games are ONLY available on PS3, and all of them are extremely enjoyable!
Just so you know, I own both (and use both) a PS3 and an XBox 360. I would not call myself a fanboy, but I do see consistantly better games for the PS3 than the 360. When the games are developed for both consoles, I will usually get the 360 version, but that may change, depending on the quality of each game. (I am definitely getting Ghostbusters on the 360, but getting Tales of Vesperia and FF 13 on the PS3) It all depends on how the developers approach the platform.
Bottom line is that Sony is getting serious about having better games on their system, and the number of exclusive PS3 titles is climbing. Dont dismiss the PS3 because of its (many) problems, its a growing platform and I believe the best is yet to come.
I can agree with you one some accounts. I myself have both systems. The PS3 doesnt what it takes to be my favorite system. Here are some of the reasons why i hate ps3,
Updates, first download the update, then to install the update is just stupid.
PS3 Games, I just purchased infamouse, I poped it in right away, installing.. WTF sony the game has to be installed first just MGS, Instally takes forever sometimes.
Demos, yes you download them and you have to install them too. Real stupid.
No Voice PArty,
No NEtflix offially although i used PLAYOn program that allows your ps3 to see NetFLix but its still stupid.
I can go on the list forever Laggy games,
Now and days i feel i payed all that money just for a Giant Blueray player and nobody is buying bluerays i still have that spiderman mine came with. ALL because it lacks the abillity to play games. Gamers are starting to love Online play and we all know the 360 has that down pack! And now Activision might drop support for both PS3 and PSP.. because their realizing nobody is buying PS3's. Im happy with both systems but I'm more for the 360 than the PS3. Most PS3 games are from PS2 anyway. It doesnt help that most of PS3 exclusives isnt even exclusive anymore, MGS, DMC4,SC4,TK6, I can go on... Sony know's their current PSP=FAil.. thats why they created the PSP GO.. and droped the UMD disk.
By the time sony catches up to 360 in features it'll be to late for them. Sales dont lie. Remember that.
@Tishawn Fahie: I can understand your frustration with some of the points you listed, but I lost you at, "I can go on the list forever laggy games". If you games lag while online, get a better connection. I have no trouble with lag when playing KZ 2, R 2, Warhawk, CoD 4, BF:BC, Socom Confrontation, GTA 4, or Rock Band 2.
@dark_quota: I'm not too sure on his insistence that you have to download and install...as far as I know, you can't do one without the other. Now the Xbox might mask it better...you may have a single progress bar that handles both download and installation, but it still has to download and install regardless.
@facepuncher: If MS got the software right from the start then why did they change it last year, to something they are now having to make a patch for cos they admitted it's slow as hell.
I know Sony is trdiantonally a hardware company n MS a software company but when it came to the UI's it's like some quantum doo-hicky must of happened cos XMB is spot on, simple ,elegant and customizable. and they have the balls to stick it across most of her devices, that shows confidence in a UI when you know it works great with a console and a TV(heard they got XMB on Vaois too as a quick luanch)
@deanbmmv: the blades OS was fine for what 360 was from the start. then it evolved way faster than they expected so NXE was devloped. Meanwhile teh XBE is has remained relatively simple and unchanged. truth is though you have to emmorize where a lot of your stuff is on ps3 and on 360 I never have trouble finding anything. SOny's on pres. admited that for a long time sony knew jack squat about theiur hardware and so their software was flawed from teh begining and only last year was on par.
@logicalnoise:Simple and unchanged? was that an attempt an an insult cos most Software designers would be proud of a compliment like that. Want to launch your game? its on the game menu, change your account settings its on the network menu, change the system settings, check the settings menu. See new message check the friends menu. Daly a Blu-Ray - video menu. View your save files go to the Game menu.
Come on my mum picked it up in 10 minutes.
360 - view your game files, actually please tell, we are trying to back them up, can't for the life of us find them. Theres no obvious place that the 360 stores it's saves. Browsing Videos n music are kinda crammed into one, and under the MyXbox row, Media don't even get it's own row.
Heck some stuff is only possible from the in-game menu (which is still Blades base, way to have a new UI) which makes most things awkward.
What's really bad is there's no manual for NXE either, it was a whole update, no paper manual on how to do everything. Sony kept it the same, so the manaul that came with the Ps3 still applies.
Anyway why we comparing UI's? I thought it was always a mutual agreement that 360 controller feels nice to hold, and the XMB was easier to use?
@deanbmmv: You can easily view anything stored on your 360's drive by simply going to settings and memory. It's even broken down into convenient categories for you.
And yeah... each type of media has it's own area under my xbox... just as it does in the xmb. I really don't see where one is any harder to get to than the other.
i just watch tv when my ps3 is updating. or smoke a cigarette. or stare at the progress bar. or poop. now, when am i gonna get the time to do all that?
Not to over-simplify it, but, well, it is an update by Sony, right? They changed the number to 3. Huge step forward, at least in mathematics. We weren't hoping for Hulu or Netflix or something, right? As long as they do not disable the Blu-ray movie playing, the only thing any of us ever use a PS3 for will continue on, regardless of their ridiculous upgrades.
@Microshock: Perhaps I am the anti-troll since I own the item that I cannot help but beat up. To be honest, the PS3 is amazing hardware, but Sony just can't seem to figure out what to do with it. Maybe that is for the best.
@Monty: @Matt0505: You have zero disc-based games?! You're weird. Why own a gaming console with 8 processors? You could easily have just bought a plain old Bluray player.
(^~^)
Seriously, if you haven't tried a game that makes use of all the data on a Bluray disc, you owe it to yourself to try. You won't find a game as vast as Metal Gear Solid 4, for example, in the PSN store.
@Akibake-: There are quite a few great games out on the PS3 and a whole slew of new ones on the way. It's silly to think that it's not a gaming platform if you've never tried it.
I think they should add PS1/PS2 Backwards compatibility. Its doable, because I had an original 60GB which was backwards compatible, and you have to download the PS2 system data for it to work. Then I sold it and got the new PS3 80GB which isn't backwards compatible (so they say), logged in to the PS Store, went to download history, downloaded the PS2 System Data that I downloaded on my PS3 60GB, and what do you know? I can play PS1/PS2 games now lol. Granted its software emulation so not all games will run, but even though Sony doesn't say it is backwards compatible, I know for a fact that its possible since I just did this all last night. Neat little trick. They should just add this to 3.0 :/ (I'm pretty sure that PS2 system data download is hidden or something... Not sure though.)
@350z-racer: I agree about the PS2 compatibility... it's retarded that they've removed it. However, all the new models are still compatible with the PS1.
Sony has said the firmware number shouldn't matter and thus great updates will come and crappy ones will come. So I'm just glad updates are always coming!
But I'm sure there is more to this then meets the eye. Like the background updating.
Sony are hardware company, I don't think they care what number they slap on the firmware. More than likely the major revision number is 'PS3', much like FF3.5.30729, this is PS3.3.0.
2.4 brought a big update in the in-game XMB, but then 2.6 just brought a slideshow app. 2.80 ain't even out yet so 3.0 speculation is a bit too soon.
