Sound ridiculous? Not so much if you know the man was arrested on suspicion of huffing gasoline.

The man pretty immediately went up in flames, and the officer, recognizing that a man becomes significantly less dangerous once he's on fire, went to the suspect's aid, patting him all over (and getting burned himself) to quell the flames. While the officer tried to help the flammable man, he was hit by rocks thrown by a young woman also on the scene, also presumably high or stupid or both. Both the man and woman, as well as two others, were charged with sniffing a prohibited substance, and the young woman was charged with throwing rocks at a policeman. [Daily Telegraph]

<![CDATA[LiveSpark Is an Audio Visualizer Made of Fire]]> The LiveSpark Fireplace features music-reactive flames, meaning, like a real-life visualizer, that the fire will jump and shrink itself based on the thumping beats it detects.

LiveSpark has both indoor and outdoor versions, and seems pretty flexible: The site shows installations of all different sizes and of different materials. We're not sure if it's actually available, as there's no order link or pricing, but if you're crazy rich, an architect, a pyromaniac, or some combination of the three, it'd make a pretty sweet addition to your abode. <![CDATA[iPod Touch Fires Up Kid's Pants, Suing Mom Says]]> A mother is suing Apple and ten Apple Store employees after his 10-yo kid received second-degree burns: His pants caught on fire when an iPod touch exploded in his pants.

The iPod was turned off inside his pants when it popped, making him feel a "burning sensation." His pants were on fire, literally, the complaint says:

Plaintiff A.V. immediately ran to the bathroom and took off his burning pants with the assistance of a friend. On said date and at said time, the Apple iTouch had burned through Plaintiff A.V.'s pants pocket and melted through his nylon/spandex underwear, burning his leg.

Ars Technica thinks this may not be technically possible, since nylon melts at 374 degress Fahrenheit and there's no way the kid would have not noticed the increase on temperature. On the other side, they argue the explosion could have been violent enough to cause the fire without the kid noticing.

Fire, schmfire, whatever. What worries me here is a kid wearing nylon/spandex underwear. [Ars Technica. Image courtesy of Brad Gillette]

<![CDATA[Jet-Engine-Alike Fire Sculpture Will Please Your Inner Pyromaniac]]> Flames, thunderous noise, drama and the threat of explosive, combustive doom: That's why this sculpture by Dave Umlas will please your inner fire-starter. Made from stainless steel, propane gas-air jets and what seems to be a turbine-like system somewhere in its construction, it exists merely to thrill you with flames. If the still photos of the sculpture aren't enough for you, check out the video. It's freakin' firey.

Awesome. I'm not sure I'd stand as close as the guys in the vid clip did: In action, and from close by, it must be like standing directly behind a Vulcan bomber as it lights up its engines and takes off*. Only less safe. [Lost Arts Collective via Makezine via Neatorama]

*This is the single loudest, most impressive and chilling sound I've ever heard. If you're unfamiliar with the Vulcan's roar, check this out.

<![CDATA[Fairground Shooting Gallery Gets Flamethrower Makeover for Burning Man]]> Created for this year's Burning Man festival, the Flamethrower Shooting Gallery looks like one hell of a stress-relieving sideshow amusement. It was created by Matisse and Roxie and recently debuted at the Oakland The Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival... presumably to a warm reception. Check out the short video to see it in action—though you might want to turn the volume down, the happy screams are a little loud.

Apparently it was designed to poke fun at the US obsession with firearms, and it's supposed to tie in with Burning Man's fascination with fire and "radical self expression.”

Whatever: launching a jet of luminous flames ten feet to incinerate a target sounds waaaay more fun than firing a BB-gun on your more "normal" fairground show. You agree, guys, don't you?... or am I just a pyromaniac? [Laughing Squid]

<![CDATA[Robot Shopping Cart Cruises Streets, Bursts into Flames]]> Why the hell is a dismembered pair of legs walking around willy nilly with a shopping cart? I'll tell you why...To draw awareness to homeless people, and the cutthroat world of cart-pushing. It was designed in 1993 by a college student who thought the concept of using robots for hazardous jobs could be applied to the most dangerous job of all, being homeless. The student rigged the cart together using a bunch of bike chains and a couple car batteries. We're not sure it serves any practical purpose—might be better if there were hands to put things in the cart. One thing the artist definitely got wrong though: homeless people do not spontaneously burst into flames. At least not in New York, they don't. [GizmoGarden via Make]

<![CDATA[iBook G4 Charger Bursts Into Flames]]>
We certainly wouldn't want this iBook G4 charger spontaneously combusting next to a stack of old newspapers, but then we wouldn't be gingerly coaxing it to start on fire, either. We're not sure what to make of this video, but one thing's for sure: the four-year-old charger could make a pretty good firestarter.

But when you notice the aluminum foil spread out underneath the charger, you can be sure this was not exactly an unexpected occurrence. Something's fishy about this.
