@Curves: Cuban cigars are overrated. They are good but not noticeably better than other good cigars. They are only sought after because of the forbiddenness.
Come on, guys - show a little sympathy for the poor company. Their proprietary formats were nothing more than a sign of their market dominance and ability to shove things down our throat, regardless of how much we might scream. Mini discs, Betamax, UMD, memory sticks, Blu-ray - every Sony turn involved formats that no one wanted, and most survived purely on Sony's gumption. Now they are dropping formats faster than I dropped my drawers on prom night (unfortunately, I should have waited until after the dancing portion of the evening).
Seriously, not all of Sony's formats are "bad", it just happens that seemingly none of them are very successful. All that will be left of Sony now is products that look like everyone else's, and is that really what we want? Maybe (or perhaps we just want them to disappear) - but, I would not mind Sony dabbling in some more unwanted formats in the future, if for no other reason than to let us know they are still Sony.
Pffft. Everything in the history of computers says there is no wall. Not only is memory capacity increasing, the rate at which it is increasing is increasing.
@frigg: They may have been true before, but that obviously can't go on forever. And we are finally reaching a wall. Because the size of the transistors and lanes is becoming so small that they will leak electrons, a problem called "quantum tunneling". This is already a proven problem. So around 16 or 11nm we need to figure out a new way of making chips, and a new material to use that can prevent this. The most popular idea is using graphene.
@Kakkoister: Just as there are always arguments why Moore's Law can't continue, and then it does, storage also has a way of overcoming barriers.
Not that it's not real, but I'd bet that the notion that quantum tunneling signals the end of road is like saying 960 bits is the end of the road because an IBM punch card can only be punched so many times before the paper falls apart.
He says the brick wall is still 5 years off... that's so far away in terms of computer technology as to be ridiculous. Something will come along, just like something always comes along with processors, and HDDs, and my girlfriend is humping my leg, so i gotta go.
@jakebathman: well, i am working off the assumption people get lots of RAM to prevent from having to tap into virtual memory aka their standard spinny/slow HDD. replace that bottle neck and maybe it won't matter.
@jakebathman: my guess is you will be limited by the number of banks you can use (which is growing) which will mean if you can't fit more memory on a chip you will be forced to revert back to extra banks. with that i think it would rely on whether or not the CPU, or whatever they will be called at that point, can handle the number of banks.
It will be interesting to see how quickly this mini Wifi technology will start appearing in all kinds of household gadgets. You could control things like lighting and appliances (dishwasher, washing machine etc.) with your computer.
@fogmaster: The Secret Service went on alert b/c the lights were flashing on and off and the stereo kept coming on in the Lincoln Bedroom. Until they found BHO in the Oval Office clutching both his BlackBerry and his sides laughing.
I agree. What's really interesting to me is at&t's move to put 3G in all electronic devices. They are going to subsidize the crap out of every electronic device on the market.
I am waiting for Apple and at&t's work on a new AppleTV. I think people are missing what Apple has accomplished with AppleTV.

It'll mean having to make the most of the capacity given, rather than simply having to increase capacity more and more to handle it

It's not the size of your WiFi antenna, it's the band"width".

I feel bad for those guys. especially the ones who have the tiny sticks.
like 256 or 512 MB sizes. Get your head out of the gutter
