@OMG! Ponies!: Oh I love that game. But my first flight sim was on TI99/4A, and it didn't look anything like you're on a plane. It looked more like that traffic controller's screen... with flight gauges.
Never played MS flight simulator. However, I did have an awesome WWI flight-sim game that ran on Win95. Taught me more about WWI than any history class.
I remember Flight Simulator, the cartridge-based game on the Commodore 64. It was possibly the first video game I ever played. After more than a quarter-century, I still remember the game.

Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er.
Captain Oveur: Roger!

Victor Basta: Request vector, over.
Captain Oveur: What?
Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324.
Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.
Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?
Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!
Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over.
Tower voice: Over.
Captain Oveur: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: Roger, over!
Roger Murdock: What?
Captain Oveur: Huh?
Victor Basta: Who?

As opposed to the old days when Guiness only gave out records for longest continuous strand of spaghetti and smallest playable chess set.

I think "F15 Strike Eagle II" was my first Flight Sim.
"Descent" got me into 360-degree shooters though.
