Last night I got 50.9 mpg on my commute with my WV Jetta TDI diesel. Granted it was with a strong tailwind, no stoplights, and freshly inflated tires, but usually it's over 40 mpg for the same commute. So I have to say pffffft to electric cars. I can go go go for over 600 miles on a tank! Weeeeeee!!!!!

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like electrics. I'm someone who loves the guttural sound of a V8, the smooth strength of a V12. I like the feeling of my car, the engine noise, and I don't think I could give that up.

@.357 Is Now Seeing Stars: I hope you are not the nostalgic type, then. There is a real possibility that V8s and V12s will cease to be produced in our lifetimes. At some point, electric cars will become more practical and economical than gas burners, and the whole transportation industry will change.

Both electrics and traditional horses have places in the enthusiast car world.

@EncNone: The Smart Brabus roadster is just a version of the Smart Roadster that was sold in 2003 but has since been discontinued due to warranty issues. The Smart Fortwo is vertical so they can reduce it's length - the passengers sit in a more upright position. It's called, you know, innovation.

one of the problems i see with a lot of smart cars and cars like the prius is that they are so hideous no one wants to use one. And i understand the desire to make it seem like you can park more cars together and save space, but with the roadster you are losing very little in that department as well.

@EncNone: You have every right to prefer stylish cars over ones with other features. However, style is passing. In the 1950s, bubble tops were all the rage. However, now they would be considered ridiculous - peoples' tastes change.

Size and convenience, on the other hand, are tangible. People can choose to think that anything is stylish. However, they cannot just "choose" to have twice as many parking spaces in cities, or choose to have an endless supply of oil in the world. Eventually, cars will evolve to meet the constraints that we will have in the future.

Everyone gets upset initially whenever things that they like change. My father's generation did not want to accept automatic chokes in cars, but now they don't give them a second thought. The same thing will happen with this smart car thing. People like you hate them now, but I am willing to bet that you will accept them in the future.

Why not get a motorcycle? You are no safer in this over a bike according to the crash test videos on Jalopnik. It is slower, cost way more, doesn't pull chics, uses more gas....i just dont see any benefit to these things.

i have a feeling that though it now has a supercar electric engine, it might not in the future. Proof of concept?

besides that going 0-60 in 4 seconds in a smartcar would be enough for me to balance out the cost.
