@Anonymoose: Nope, such a thing would create drag, which would reduce efficiency of the vehicle, which would... Plus really all you need is a bird strike on the damn prop located on the roof of your car and you'd end up in the river.
@Lite: is combing the desert.: I don't buy that, cars already have drag. Plus nobody said it has to be on the roof. A couple small props down in the grille area (in lieu of foglights, for example) would serve to supply a small amount of power... probably equal or greater to the amount these shocks do.
@G-Ram: Which then just makes the car THAT much more expensive to repair when you rear-end someone. Thus your insurance costs will go up, eating away at actual money savings. Which is pretty much what counts unless you can afford to be eco-friendly by paying more money.
@G-Ram: The grill is there to let air into the engine compartment. If you put fans there, you reduce the airflow and will need bigger grills, further increasing drag.
@Hello Mister Walrus: If you think about it, there are already one or two big fans *behind* the grille. Many of them are run by electric motors instead of belts. It would be a simple matter to harvest electricity from them when they aren't needed for cooling (like the winter time.)
@FredicvsMaximvs: Actually, you're on to something. The cooling fans only need to run when the car is parked/going to slow to cool the engine. At higher speeds it could be used to generate electricity.
@Lite: is combing the desert.: I guess the same thing that happens every time an alternator "shorts out and starts delivering electric shocks to the driver".
@Gann: My car already shocks me enough as it is. If they could harness static electricity caused by vehicle upholstery rubbing against my wool coat I swear they'd make millions.
