"And while the charger itself is cleared for airline travel, the methanol bottles aren't. Toshiba hopes to sell them at airports for quick charges before or after flights."
Interviewee A - "It was kind of crazy how it happened. My phone had died in the middle of a call so I thought I'd give it a quick charge. Next thing I know my iPhone's doing the quarter mile in 3.2 seconds. Coincidentally, I may have busted my phone, but I qualified for the NHRA finals in Pamona next month." #toshibadynariocharger
So, does this require some "special, magic" methanol, or will regular reagent-grade methanol work?
And what about ethanol? Is the cell methanol-only, or can you find a wino and pour his Thunderbird into it, if you're caught with a low battery on your Blackberry in a bad neighborhood? #toshibadynariocharger
awesome, but this needs to be able to run off more conventional fuels. i'm in a sea of ignorance here, so someone tell me - can this sort of thing be made to run off butane or propane? #toshibadynariocharger
I am trying to see the benefit of this device. In any environment with outlets, wall charging is preferable so this is either for someone who needs to charge a device while constantly moving or is in an area with no wall outlets. Even so, those semi-disposable Duracell cell phone chargers seem a lot simpler / cheaper / reliable a solution. Fuel cells seem neat but I'm not sure if this is the right application. Gotta love that 1960s handheld transistor radio look tho. #toshibadynariocharger
@nutbastard: Understood. What I would like to know is, is the carbon footprint for producing and operating this awesome PPP (Personal PowerPlant) lower than using your wallcharger/computers USB? #toshibadynariocharger
almost certainly no, but seriously, you're taking the carbon footprint thing a bit too far. i'd be willing to bet that a 6 pack of beer releases more CO2 than a full tank on this thing does. #toshibadynariocharger
methane is not methanol. But they're both highly flammable and sort of dangerous, so they have that going for them.
Also, I have a feeling that if you have to buy cartridges of methanol, there will be a market for methanol cartridge refills, just as there is an ink cartridge refill market. #toshibafuelcell
Ok, price plz? Yeah, it's not there because it's gonna cost you an arm and both legs since, unless they are using some magic, make believe materials, the thing is basically a piece of platinum. Methanol fuel cell run on Pt (cathode) and PtRu (anode), both noble metals. So, coming from someone who's getting his PhD on this stuff, you are gonna pay for it people. But hey, on the upside, you'll actually have an incentive to recycle it, since you can reclaim about 95% of the noble metals. Platinum grillz here I come! Fuel cells, what a failure...
Fuel cell powered speakers are a brilliant idea that solves a big problem; at parties, usually the booze runs out before the music, or sometimes vice versa if you're at a beach party. With ethanol powered speakers you can be sure that the music and the booze run out at exactly the same time.

Or, ya know, use a wall outlet in the airport for free. #toshibadynariocharger
