Size does matter when trying to travel light, I suppose.

The Price: $180...which is astoundingly cheap for a quality (although not top line) waterproof camera.

The Waterproofness: Pretty decently rated to 3 meters. No accompanying shock or coldproofing, so this guy is strickly for pool and tropical snorkeling, not for snow or deeper activity.

The Image Quality: The sample shots I took simultaneously with other waterproof cams revealed a few things, but mainly, noise at anything but great lighting conditions. And taking underwater shots near twilight, the Fuji triggered its flash before other cameras did, implying a slowness in lens setup that even the 1600 iso couldn't overcome. And like most periscope internal lens set ups the edges around photos were not razor sharp. Overall, color was undersaturated at times but photos were good in bright light as long as there wasn't too much contrast to deal with. (See: Hawaii photos) There were an abnormal number of shots ruined by lens smudges, which other cameras seemed to shrug off. (User error? Well, it happened to four z33wp users who tested this camera for me, so you be the judge.) I love the variety of photo modes for different scenarios, but the UI to switch between these modes is buried two levels down in a menu. There's face detection, and digital shake reduction, too.

Video Quality: Does a max of 640 by 480 pixel video.

Controls are WEIRD: The buttons on the back are laid out in a grid, and the control feel suffers because the buttons have dual purposes in many cases; the cross pad also coincides with functions like menu buttons, etc. And zoom buttons are labeled W and T, for wide and telephoto, which took me a moment to figure out and I continuously forgot about them. Maybe its me being dumb, but I found it slightly confusing compared to the button layouts on other cameras. But the good news is that the entire back, side from those buttons, is a 2.7 inch screen.

Shape: Man, no waterproof camera has ever slipped into my pocket so easily.

The Verdict: For Budget types and Fashionistas that splash around a little bit in the waves.

Small and pretty. Cheap, too.

Photo noise, awkward controls. With sunglasses on, maybe the photos won't look that bad.

Summermodo is a chance for Giz to get outside and test our gear where it belongs.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm Busts Out Five New Cameras, Including a Prosumer Faux-DSLR]]> Fujifilm today announced five new cameras at an array of prices, ranging from the $90, 10MP A170 to the "prosumer" DSLR-lite FinePix S200EXR (pictured) at $600. It's a pretty solid lineup of low- to mid-end shooters.

From the bottom: The A170 and its 12MP brother, the A220, are the base models at only $90 and $100, respectively. Next is the 12.2MP FinePix J38 at $130, rounding out the low end of the lineup. The mid-range have a new focus on style, all being very thin and quite good-looking, with the FinePix F70EXR at $280 and the FinePix Z37 at $150. They're probably all decent; Fuji has a fairly good track record with point-and-shoots, having been awarded a best buy by JD Power last year. But none of them are very interesting.

The FinePix S200EXR, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd bird. At $600, it's at the same price as some very low-end DSLRs, but it's not actually one itself, described instead as an "SLR-type" camera. Nevertheless, the 12MP camera has tons of features and a 14.3x lens and will shoot in RAW, and Fuji gloats that the lens and body are "perfectly aligned" instead of rammed in by your clumsy, Dorito's-stained hands. Check out the full, exhaustive press release below. [Fujifilm]

FUJIFILM'S UNVEILS ITS FIRST LONG-ZOOM DIGITAL COMPACT CAMERA:
THE FINEPIX F70EXR

Powerful New Addition to Fujifilm's Award-Winning F-Series Offers DSLR-like Capabilities in an Affordable, Stylish Package

Valhalla, NY, July 22, 2009 – FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today announced the FinePix F70EXR, a sleek, compact digital camera that combines intuitive use with the most advanced features and technology available in a point-and-shoot digital camera. The announcement of the FinePix F70EXR also marks Fujifilm's first model in the growing long-zoom compact segment with an impressive Fujinon 10x wide angle optical zoom.

Encased in a beautifully sculpted metal shell with a double coated lacquer finish and measuring only 22.7mm thick, the FinePix F70EXR offers several enhancements over its predecessor, the FinePix F60 and boasts marked improvements over competing long-zoom digital cameras, particularly in the areas of design, image quality and capture technology.

"The FinePix F70EXR, which has been designed specifically for taking demanding shots in challenging conditions, requires a sophisticated sensor and control algorithms to ensure every shot looks the very best," said David Troy, marketing manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "By adding our EXR technology to the FinePix F70EXR, users will achieve outstanding images in virtually any lighting condition, and have the advantages of a 10x zoom that fits in your shirt pocket."

Super CCD EXR
Long zoom compact cameras, as opposed to standard compact digital cameras, typically use a smaller sensor that is vulnerable to difficult lighting conditions since light has a harder time reaching the CCD sensor. To mitigate this vulnerability, Fujifilm has introduced its award-winning EXR technology into the FinePix F70EXR, allowing for significant improvement in image quality against the competition.
Introduced earlier this year with the FinePix F200EXR, Fujifilm's EXR technology uses the human eye as the basis for the perfect camera sensor, creating a Super CCD sensor capable of registering excellent levels of detail when switched to its HR (High Resolution) mode. The FinePix F70EXR is also capable of offering excellent quality in low light and superb highlight detail in contrast light when switched to its SN (High Sensitivity and Low Noise) mode and DR (Wide Dynamic Range) modes respectively.

EXR Modes
An advanced feature on the FinePix F70EXR, 'EXR Auto' helps take the guesswork out of setting the camera by doing it for you. EXR Auto is a sophisticated set of program modes that can automatically detect six different types of scenes - Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Backlit Portrait, Night, and Night Portrait. The camera will recognize the scene and optimize focus, color balance, exposure, flash and sensitivity and will automatically switch the sensor to HR, SN or DR mode depending on the lighting conditions of the scene. By using EXR Auto, users can let the camera do all the hard work and concentrate more on getting the best shot possible.

Multi Frame Technology: Pro Focus Mode / Pro Low-light Mode
New Fujifilm EXR digital cameras, including the FinePix F70EXR will offer several new shooting modes that combine the power of Super CCD EXR with Multi Frame Technology to enable users to capture exceptional images that rival the most expensive professional D-SLR cameras.

Typically, one of the ways to distinguish 'D-SLR' photography from 'compact' photography has been the use of 'wide aperture' to create mood and depth in a picture. These 'professional' shots are now possible on the FinePix F70EXR, which uses Pro Focus Mode to combine two or three burst shots together. Through complex digital imaging technology, a crisp shot of the subject is synthesized against a defocused background and foreground. Ideal for portraiture, nature photography or any subject that needs 'lifting' from its background, the FinePix F70EXR Pro Focus Mode provides satisfying professional results at the touch of a button.

Meanwhile, Pro Low-light Mode is applied to solving the problems of noisy low light shots. With current cameras, it is possible to achieve relatively blur-free low light shots using high ISO and CCD shift mechanical image stabilization. However, high ISO settings typically come at a cost, as the ISO 1600 setting will invariably produce distracting and ugly noise. In Pro Low-light Mode, the camera will take bursts of four high sensitivity images using Pixel Fusion Technology[*1] in quick succession. With Multi Frame Technology, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th images are overlapped to create one image with extremely low noise.

Super Slim 10x Zoom Lens
In conjunction with the Super CCD EXR sensor, the FinePix F70EXR features a Fujinon 10x optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 27mm wide-angle to 270mm telephoto. The lens of the FinePix F70EXR features Super EBC Coating that keeps ghosting and flare to minimum to allow for optimal picture quality.

Film Simulation Modes
Similar to other high-end FinePix models, the FinePix F70EXR offers five different film 'modes' to allow the photographer full creative expression to explore a variety of pre-set color and contrast modes designed around Fujifilm's most famous film emulsions. The modes are:

• Velvia/Vivid mode for rich and luscious landscapes
• PROVIA/Standard mode for excellent, sharp, standard photography
• ASTIA/Soft mode for soft, fine, smooth tonality
• Black & White mode captures the dramatic honesty of your image in black and white
• Sepia mode creates a sense of nostalgia with the warm brown "antique" tones of Sepia

In the Provia, Velvia and Astia modes, the dynamic range can now be set to 800% to improve and highlight details further.

New 'Super Intelligent' Flash
The FinePix F70EXR offers a radically improved flash control system which efficiently controls the level of flash for a given exposure to produce beautifully balanced flash illumination across the foreground and background. Gone are the ugly washout shots where the subject is blasted with light and the background dark and unexposed. Super Intelligent Flash is most useful in macro photography where the contrast between subject and background can be especially challenging, but is also effective for night and backlit photography.

New High Contrast LCD
The FinePix F70EXR is fitted with an improved high contrast 230K-pixel 2.7" LCD. The high contrast LCD is a considerable benefit in bright light, and means that the camera can be pitched
at various shooting angles to enable framing of awkward shots. Viewable at 160 degrees both vertically and horizontally, the LCD is bright and clear for beautiful rendition of shots in playback.

Dual Stabilization
Long zoom cameras need stabilization more than any other compact, with handshake and subject movement a particular problem in low light at telephoto range. The FinePix F70EXR reduces blur to a minimum by deploying Picture Stabilization to automatically increase shutter speeds to freeze action, and CCD Image Stabilization to counteract the problems of handshake. By cleverly combining these two, blur is reduced to an absolute minimum.

Face Detection 3.0 and Automatic Red-eye Removal
To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix F70EXR is fitted with Fujifilm's latest Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.

The FinePix F70EXR will be available August 2009 at a retail price of $279.95.

FUJIFILM UNVEILS ITS MOST ADVANCED CONSUMER MODEL TO DATE:
THE FINEPIX S200EXR DIGITAL CAMERA

SUPER CCD EXR Sensor and Fujinon Lens Combination Pushes Picture Quality to New Levels

Valhalla, NY, July 22, 2009 – FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today unveiled the FinePix S200EXR digital camera, its most advanced SLR-styled camera to date. Combining the pin-sharp 14.3x Fujinon optical zoom lens (30.5mm-436mm equivalent) so popular in its predecessor, the award-winning FinePix S100FS, with Fujifilm's latest 12-MegaPixel Super CCD EXR sensor, the FinePix S200EXR is aimed at top-end camera enthusiasts looking for excellent picture quality without the hassle, bulk and expense of a D-SLR system.

Compact, lightweight 'bridge' cameras offering long zoom and high image quality have proved a big hit with those looking for an alternative to bulky interchangeable lens systems. Users of the FinePix S200EXR will find their results equal or superior to D-SLRs, principally due to the revolutionary design of Fujifilm's EXR CCD sensor technology. The key improvements of the FinePix S200EXR over the FinePix S100FS are:

• 1/1.6" 12 megapixel Super CCD EXR sensor
• EXR Priority modes and EXR Auto
• Pro Focus Mode and Pro Lowlight Mode
• 5 Film Simulation Modes (Black & White mode and Sepia mode is added)
• A new 2.7" high contrast 230k-pixel LCD
• New 'Super Intelligent Flash'
• Improved battery life – almost a 50% increase on the FinePix S100FS
• Combined CCD-RAW (EXR)/JPEG shooting

"This camera benefits from the culmination of Fujifilm's Super CCD EXR technology and EXR Processor development," said David Troy, marketing manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "This powerful combination allows the FinePix S200EXR, with its wide dynamic range, to capture the subtleties in color, tone and detail to deliver perfect shot conditions every time."

Super CCD EXR
The EXR sensor on the FinePix S200EXR was built to perfectly match the optical qualities of its 14.3x Fujinon optical zoom lens. The goal was to produce a sensor/lens combination that works as close to that of the human eye as possible. The EXR sensor is essentially a switchable sensor; changing its complex electronic behavior to suit the subject, changing its characteristics as the photographer demands, and producing the very best picture without making compromises.

This sensor has already won great acclaim with the FinePix F200EXR. Combined with the much bigger, more powerful 14.3x lens, it delivers quite astounding results. The FinePix S200EXR offers 3 switchable modes in one sensor:

High Resolution (HR) Mode: Deploys all 12 million pixels and is designed to offer the finest detail of intricate subjects when light is full and even.

Wide Dynamic Range (DR) Mode: Captures different exposures with two sets of 6 million pixels, which, when combined, gives an excellent level of detail in highlights that would otherwise be lost.

High Sensitivity and Low Noise (SN) Mode: Caps two adjacent pixels together to produce 6 million large photodiodes, which are big enough to absorb light in the darkest of conditions, to produce low-light shots of extraordinary quality with minimal noise and grain.

Advanced Intelligence
The FinePix S200EXR also offers EXR Priority Mode, which is the most efficient mechanism yet invented to quickly optimize the camera's settings to allow the photographer to concentrate on capturing the perfect shot. The photographer can decide which sensor setting is preferable by choosing High Resolution Priority (HR) to maximize resolution, High ISO and Low Noise Priority (SN) for high quality low-light work or D-Range Priority (DR) for the best detail with contrasting subjects.

In addition, the FinePix S200EXR features the EXR Auto Mode, which offers 6 different modes depending on the setting: Portrait, Night, Macro, Landscape, Night Portrait and Backlit Portrait. The camera will automatically recognize the scene and not only optimize focus, color balance, exposure, flash and sensitivity, but will also automatically switch the sensor to HR, SN or DR mode depending on the lighting conditions of the scene.

Super Sharp Lens
The massive 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens is truly a delight to use in such a compact, lightweight design. The ultra-high precision Fujinon lens achieves maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 30.5mm-436mm equivalent with maximum aperture of a bright F2.8 (wide angle) to F5.3 (telephoto). Because of the composite body and lens structure, there is no need to worry about dirt or dust on the Super CCD EXR sensor and they are perfectly aligned for the very best results. The manual zoom offers faster image framing with fingertip precision as well as offering a user experience that closely matches the use of a high-end DSLR.

Pro Focus Mode / Pro Low-light Mode
The FinePix S200EXR also sports a Pro Focus Mode which is created by using Fujifilm's new Multi-Frame Technology. A burst of two or three frames is taken and by taking the distance information off, the main subject is crisply matted against a defocused foreground and background. This mode is perfect for portrait or nature photography, where professional results are needed quickly with minimal adjustment to the camera and without the need to use a PC.

Meanwhile, Pro Low-light Mode can be applied to help solve the problems of noisy low light shots. With current digital cameras, it is possible to achieve relatively blur-free low light shots using high ISO and CCD shift (or optical image) stabilization, but this comes at a cost, as the ISO 1600 setting will invariably produce distracting and ugly noise.

Once switched to Pro Low-light Mode, the FinePix F200EXR will take a burst of four high sensitivity images using Pixel Fusion Technology [*1] in quick succession. By using the camera's Multi Frame Technology, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th images are overlapped to create one image with extremely low noise.

Film Simulation Modes
One of the more popular features on the FinePix S100FS is reproduced and extended on the FinePix S200EXR. The FinePix S200EXR offers five modes as follows:

• Velvia/Vivid mode for rich and luscious landscapes
• PROVIA/Standard mode for excellent, sharp, standard photography
• ASTIA/Soft mode for soft, fine, smooth tonality
• Black & White mode captures the dramatic honesty of your image in black and white
• Sepia mode creates a sense of nostalgia with the warm brown "antique" tones of Sepia

In Provia, Velvia and Astia modes, the dynamic range can be now be set to 800% to improve and highlight details further.

New High Contrast 2.7" LCD
The FinePix S200EXR is fitted with an improved high contrast 230k-pixel 2.7" LCD. The high contrast LCD is a considerable benefit in bright light and the camera can be pitched at various shooting angles to enable framing of awkward shots. Viewable at 160-degrees both vertically and horizontally, the LCD is bright and clear for beautiful rendition of shots in playback.

Super Intelligent Flash
Fujifilm's Super Intelligent Flash system is a flash control technology that lets you take flash-assisted shots without the danger of flash wash-out. Integrated into the AUTO mode, this next-generation flash system makes it easy to capture both subjects and background in bright, clear and natural detail over the full flash range. This allows for much better flash control when shooting in macro and makes sure that the subject is brightly lit and the background clearly defined when shooting in night mode.

Dual Image Stabilization
The FinePix S200EXR features Fujifilm's Optical Image Stabilization technology to ensure clean, sharp and blur-free images, even in low-light conditions. This combines image stabilization by Optical Image Stabilization to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm High ISO, to reduce blur caused by subject movement (by automatically increasing ISO), for the ultimate in stabilization technology.

Manual Settings
The FinePix S200EXR also allows you full manual control with the ability to set shutter speeds of between 1/4,000 second and 30 seconds. It is possible to take photos with combinations of ISO sensitivity, which has a broad range of setting choices, and multiple apertures of between F2.8 - F11 at 1/3EV steps. Using the manual exposure setting, bulb exposure of up to 30 seconds is possible. The color, noise reduction control, tone and the sharpness can all be individually set as well.

Multi Bracketing
The FinePix S200EXR has 3 bracketing functions useful for high level photography: Film Simulation Bracketing (which automatically sets Film Simulation to PROVIA, Velvia and ASTIA for simultaneous capture of 3 frames), Dynamic Range Bracketing (which automatically sets dynamic range to 100%, 200% and 400% for simultaneous capture of 3 frames) and AE Bracketing (which automatically sets exposure range to even, under and over for simultaneous capture of 3 frames).

Other noteworthy features in the FinePix S200EXR:
• Combined CCD RAW (EXR)/JPEG shooting: New to the FinePix S200EXR is the ability to shoot both a RAW and JPEG shot simultaneously [*2], like the award-winning S5Pro digital camera. RAW is for ultimate quality shots via post processing, JPEG is for great quality with no need for further work.
• Battery life extended: With improved power management, the FinePix S200EXR can now provide 370 shots per charge of the included NP-140 Lithium Ion battery, so there is no need to worry about power running out half way through a photo shoot.
• Movie Mode: The FinePix S200EXR can record movies in 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second. The optical zoom can be used during movie recording.
• Electronic View Finder: The camera is fitted with a 0.2" 200K-pixel EVF, for sharp and clear images.

The FinePix S200EXR will debut in August 2009 at a retail price of $599.95.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm Z33WP Waterproof Camera Is Like a Metal Jolly Rancher That Takes Pictures]]> Spec-wise, there's nothing truly spectacular (har har) about Fujifilm's waterproof 10-megapixel Z33WP—which doesn't even fully climb aboard the tough-cam bandwagon by promising shock or arctic defenses—but there's one thing about it that I love.

The buttons. No fiddling with dials, switches or toggles, hoping you're cranking the right one—just eight buttons in a clean, dual-row setup provide direct access to everything on the camera, from playback to its VGA video mode at a glance.

The waterproof-ness works to 10 feet.

Also, it's small and bright and kind of reminds me of a Jolly Rancher, which, along with simplicity, is about all you can hope for in a camera that's under $200.

‘Life-Proof' FinePix Z33WP Captures Treasured Moments Anytime, Anywhere, and in Any Conditions

Valhalla, N.Y., February 17, 2009 – Expanding the popular Z-series digital cameras for young-at-heart, trend-savvy consumers, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. delivers flexible functionality and form to active and hip users with the launch of the FinePix Z33WP digital camera. A 2.7", 230,000 dots resolution LCD screen – the largest of any Z-series camera yet – and Fujinon 3x Optical Zoom lens allows for a clearer view of those not-to-be-missed moments on the beach, on the ski slopes, hiking in the mountains or boating at the lake. It's also perfect for everyday activities in the rain, the pool or any other place you might think twice about taking a conventional digital camera.

Intelligent Scene Recognition
Adding ease to outdoor navigation, the FinePix Z33WP is equipped with a new SR Auto (Automatic Scene Recognition) mode that enables the camera to intelligently recognize six types of scenes automatically. For each picture taken in this mode, the Z33WP will optimize the ideal exposure, focus, white balance and ISO for the scene to ensure the best quality picture is captured with ease. In addition, Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization is powered by high sensitivity for faster shutter and operational speeds to help reduce camera shake, keeping real life moments as true to form as possible.

Easy Sharing
The family-friendly Z33WP also features Fujifilm's handy Blog Mode which allows for easier sharing with friends and family members. The Blog mode automatically resizes a photo to a standard 640x480 pixels (VGA) or 320x240 pixels (QVGA) image size and enables 12 in-camera editing features such as Zooming, Miniature effect, Illustration and Painting, cutting the need for extra time with home editing.

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix Z33WP is loaded with the following handy features:
• Face Detection Technology: Operating in tandem with automatic red-eye removal, the FinePix Z33WP identifies up to 10 human faces in a scene, and sets the correct focus and exposure, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame.
• Automatic Red Eye Removal accents the aforementioned features by lending an extra touch to that group shot. The Z33WP automatically checks for red eye and self-corrects it in each and every person in the photo, saving time on post-editing.
• Couple and Group Timer Modes: Working in conjunction with Face Detection technology detects two faces in ‘Couple Timer Mode' and up to four faces in ‘Group Timer Mode' in a frame.
• One Touch MOVIE Button: Capture VGA quality movie clips at 30 frames per second with sound to capture all of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
• Battery Life: The long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 200 shots) allows for extended use without worrying if the camera is going to last for the duration of the trip.

"With the success of the FinePix Z20fd for the Gen Y crowd, it is only a natural progression for Fujifilm to provide active, technology-savvy families with the unparalleled style and function that everyone demands in the 21st century," said David Troy, marketing manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "Today's users not only want to experience everything life has to offer, but they also want their camera to be able to experience and capture it with them."

The FinePix Z33WP will debut in late March at a retail price of $199.95.

<![CDATA['Tenth Floor Please' Says The Japanese Janitor Robot Stepping Into the Elevator]]> Fuji Heavy Industries (very heavy) and Sumitomo have introduced the future of industrial cleaning automatons—a beefed-up Roomba-like bot that not only cleans a Japanese office tower's filthy floors, but takes the elevator to cover the whole building all by itself.

The 'bot interfaces with an office tower's elevators via an optical control system (which it uses laser orientation to find), effectively eliminating the need for multiple bots on different floors, all in the name of "achieving homogenization and the environment clean and tidy with a good feeling to move," according to Google Translate.

Whether the Heavy Services Robots Local 121 will have anything to say about all of the robots that just became redundancies, we shall see. [PDF press release (Japanese) via Crunch Gear]

<![CDATA[Fuji's 3D Camera System]]> Fuji announced a 3d digital imaging system that uses modern image processors to take images with similar quality found in modern cameras. The dual lens system can also be used for future applications including instantly stiched together panoramas from two simultaneous shots, or using one CCD to shoot video while the other shoots stills. (Things regular cameras can do now, with not much difficulty.) What's interesting is that Fuji simultaneously developed a 3D imaging ecosystem including an 8.4 inch, 3D LCD display that needs no glasses and a 3D printer. [Let's go Digital]

<![CDATA[Hands On Fujifilm S100FS Faux DSLR: Why?]]> Okay, I get prosumer cams like Canon's G9 or even Fuji's other big-zoom shooters. The S100FS, I do not get. It's the same size as a DSLR. It costs the same as a DSLR ($799). But it's not a DSLR. And not in a good way.

Its showstopper feature, the ridonkulous ISO ratings, fell way short, though you should keep in mind this is a pre-production model, and it could get much better before it ships: A few snaps shot at 6400 had mad noise, evident even in playback on its LCD screen. That aside, I still can't really feel for this camera. The only feature I can say is neat is the tilting screen but Sony has it too on their new alphas. Maybe some more extensive testing would reveal otherwise, but my based on initial impressions, if you're going to pick up a camera that weighs, feels and is priced like a DSLR, just get a DSLR. <![CDATA[Fujifilm's S1000fd and S8100fd Ultra-Zoom Pro-sumer Cameras Have 12x and 18x Zoom]]> These two high-end consumer cameras from Fujifilm both have fairly high zooms (12x on the S1000fd which is a 33mm-396mm equivalent, and 18x on the S8100fd, which is a 27mm-486mm equivalent), but they've got a few other interesting functions as well.

The S1000fd succeeds the Fuji S700 by having 10-megapixels, that 12x zoom, facial detection, automatic red-eye removal, panorama shooting mode, a 2.7-inch LCD, max 1600 ISO (or 3200 ISO at a decreased 3-megapixel resolution), picture stabilization, manual mode, 30fps VGA movies, high speed shooting (7.5fps at 2-megapixels for 15 shots, 3.3fps at 5-megapixels for 6 shots, 1.4fps at 10-megapixels for 3 shots) and an xD/SD/SD-HD slot. This will retail in April for $249.

The S8100fd, on the other hand, is also 10-megapixels but has an 18x wide angle zoom and 6400ISO (at 5-megapixels), which follows up the S8000fd's 18x zoom without wide angle. This, like the S1000fd, has face detection, but also has i-Flash (intelligent flash), manual mode, macro shooting at up to 1cm, dual-shot mode, 30fps VGA movies, 2.5-inch LCD, and xD/SD/SD-HC card compatibility. This will be available in March for $399.

FUJIFILM UNVEILS WORLD'S SMALLEST* 12X OPTICAL ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA

SLR-Style FinePix S1000fd Extends Range and Feature Set With Longer Zoom,
Larger LCD and New Panorama Shooting Mode

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A. Inc. today announced the successor to the wildly popular SLR-styled FinePix S700 with the introduction of the world's smallest digital camera with a 12x optical zoom, the FinePix S1000fd.

Perfect for advanced amateur photographers who want an affordable, step-up digital camera, the 10-MegaPixel FinePix S1000fd builds on the legacy of the FinePix S700 with the addition of a Fujinon 12x optical zoom (33mm-396mm equivalent) for greater range and flexibility, Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, and a brand new Panoramic Shooting mode.

Face Detection with Automatic Red Eye Removal
Face Detection operates by identifying and prioritizing up to 6 faces in a framed scene, and then adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. After a shot is captured each detected face is instantly checked for red eye; if it is found, it is corrected automatically, saving the time-consuming process of fixing it later.

Panorama Shooting Mode
For catching beautiful scenery or very large groups, the new Panorama Shooting mode makes it easy to create impressive panoramic photos. This mode captures and combines a maximum of three consecutive shots at 3 MegaPixel resolution each, which are saved to the memory card as a panoramic picture.

Rounding out the FinePix S1000fd's powerful feature set is a large 2.7" high-resolution (230k pixel) LCD plus electronic viewfinder (EVF) and ISO levels of up to ISO 1600 at full resolution and ISO 3200 at 3 MegaPixel resolution.

Fujifilm's new FinePix S1000fd also offers the following useful features:
Picture Stabilization mode: A selectable mode, Picture Stabilization uses the heightened sensitivity of the FinePix S1000fd and high-speed shutter settings to reduce blur caused by hand-shake or subject movement. It allows the camera to automatically choose the correct light sensitivity and optimal shutter speed to produce clear, blur-free images.
Full Manual Photographic Control: Photo enthusiasts and advanced photographers have total control with manual adjustment options for various camera settings including resolution, ISO, aperture, shutter speed and more.
High Speed Shooting: Capture the action with the High Speed Shooting mode: 7.5 fps @ 2MP for 15 shots; 3.3 fps @ 5MP for 6 shots; and 1.4 fps @ 10MP for 3 shots.
Movie Recording: VGA quality at 30 frames per second with sound.
14 Pre-programmed Scene Modes: The FinePix S1000fd features 14 pre-programmed scene modes that offer a one-touch setting for almost any situation, including: Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Museum, Party, Flower, Text.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: The FinePix S1000fd features an "xD/SD Compatible slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.
Operates on 4xAA Batteries: The ultimate in convenience and accessibility, using AA batteries means in a pinch, more batteries are just moments away.

"With the FinePix S1000fd, Fujifilm is offering advanced amateur photographers an affordable, step-up digital camera," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "Fitted with a Fujinon 12x optical zoom for greater range and flexibility and a new Panoramic Shooting mode for capturing beautiful scenic shots with ease, the FinePix S1000fd is packed full of high-end features and priced at a level consumers can afford."

The FinePix S1000fd will debut in April 2008 at a retail price of $249.95.

FUJIFILM ANNOUNCES 18X ULTRA-ZOOM CAMERA FOR BUDDING PROSUMERS FinePix S8100fd Offers Advanced Features at an Affordable Price

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today announced the launch of the long zoom, SLR-styled FinePix S8100fd digital camera. Perfect for photographers seeking a step-up digital camera, Fujifilm's FinePix S8100fd combines user-friendliness with long-zoom flexibility and high speed shooting modes that are rare at the consumer level and perfect for great action shots.

Continuing on the success of the wide-angle, long zoom FinePix S8000fd, the 10-MegaPixel FinePix S8100fd integrates a Fujinon 18x Wide Angle Optical Zoom fixed lens, which offers a 27mm-486mm equivalent and allows the user to achieve greater range than ever before. The sealed, fixed-lens system prevents dust contamination and eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, making it an easy-to-use, affordable alternative to the complex D-SLR system.

Features Born From Face Detection
Fujifilm's innovative face detection technology, recognized with a 2007 'Best of What's New Award' from Popular Science Magazine, has enabled a number of advanced features that advanced consumer photographer will enjoy. Face Detection operates by identifying and prioritizing up to 10 faces in a framed scene and then adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. After the shot is captured the automatic Red Eye Removal feature instantly checks each detected face for red eye and if it's found, corrects it in the camera automatically, saving the time-consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded. A new Instant Zoom function captures moving subjects at high zoom settings. After zooming on a subject, a single button gives an additional 1.4x or 2x digital zoom at the center focus region of the frame. Zoom Bracketing performs a similar action using Fujifilm's face detection technology to lock its zoom action on a subject's face automatically as it enters the shot.

Like the FinePix S8000fd, the FinePix S8100fd features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization, a marriage of mechanical sensor shift stabilization, to steady the photographer's hand, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, which uses fast shutter speeds and ISO levels of up to ISO 6400 (at 5 MegaPixels) for total anti-blur protection. As a result, an increase in clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions. A Continuous Shooting Mode makes it easy to shoot moving subjects like pets and kids. This new feature allows high-speed shooting of up to 33 frames at 13.5 frames per second (at 3 megapixels; 6.8 frames per second at 5 megapixels). And with high speed playback at 10 frames per second you can be sure you've captured all of the action.

Other helpful features found on the FinePix S8100fd for top-quality picture-taking include:
i-Flash: i-Flash Intelligent Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix S8100fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a washed-out effect. And with an automatic pop-up flash, it's always ready when you need it.
Full Manual Photographic Control: Photo enthusiasts and advanced photographers have total control with manual adjustment options for various camera settings including resolution, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and more.
Scene modes: A wide range of 13 pre-programmed scene modes provides top-quality photos in a variety of shooting conditions.
Super Macro Mode: Full-frame close-ups are easy with this feature that lets the photographer to get as close as 1cm (0.4 inch)
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix S8100fd quickly shoots two images in succession - one with and one without flash - saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot comparison and decide whether the FinePix S8100fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Movie Mode: VGA quality 30 frames per second with sound.
High Resolution LCD: The 2.5" Wide View LCD display offers 230,000 pixels of high resolution with a 60 frames per second refresh rate for smooth viewing.
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): In addition to framing your shots with the 2.5" high resolution LCD, the S8100fd also offers a high resolution electronic viewfinder to eye up the best shot with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: A single media slot accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity (SD-HC) cards too.
Operates on 4xAA Batteries: The ultimate in convenience and accessibility, using AA batteries means in a pinch, more batteries are just moments away.

"This is a work-horse camera for photographers who want the convenience of an SLR-like model, a powerful zoom, high-speed continuous shooting and the ease of use that is often relegated to more compact model," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "The bonus that comes with the S8100fd is the set of features made possible by Fujifilm's advances in Face Detection and Dual Image Stabilization technology."

The FinePix S8100fd will debut in March 2008 at a retail price of $399.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm's Advanced S100FS Drops the Megapixels to Pick Up Light]]> I'm a fan of Fujifilm's "Most advanced" S100FS, even though its 11MP rating is less than the F series point and shoot they just released. Why? Because screw MP ratings! By dropping the MP count even further to 6, it can hit a light sensitivity of ISO 6400; drop it to 3MP and you've got an astounding 10,000 ISO. That's a better use of spare sensor space than goosing up to a MP rating good for poster sized prints. Although it borrows heavily from Fuji's S5 Pro camera in the feature department, this camera has no direct predecessor. The FS in the S100FS's model name stands for Film Substitute.

The camera has a 14.3x lens, adjustable manually, with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 28-400mm. It's paired with a 2.5 tiltable LCD and both optical and digital image stabilization. The camera can also handle a new wide dynamic range of 100-400% for accurate capture of high contrast scenes. There are also simulation modes that replicate after the colorful characteristics of Fuji's film. The camera has face recognition, and although Fuji pioneered the tech, I'm not sure they've kept up with the times; this system does red eye and can detect 10 faces in a scene, but Sony's system can detect smiles and manually focus on children or adult faces.

FUJIFILM UNVEILS ITS MOST ADVANCED CONSUMER MODEL TO DATE: THE FINEPIX S100FS DIGITAL CAMERA

Advanced Prosumer Model Offers DSLR Control and Functionality

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today unveiled the FinePix S100FS (Film Simulation) digital camera, its most advanced SLR-styled camera to date. The FinePix S100FS provides an all-in-one solution for photo enthusiasts and advanced amateur photographers seeking the manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, without the hassle and expense of additional lenses and other accessories.

The FinePix S100FS is equipped with a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, Fujifilm's 8th generation Super CCD sensor with 11 MegaPixels, RP III processor, 2.5" tiltable LCD and ISO capabilities of up to ISO 6400 at 6MegaPixel and an incredible ISO 10,000 at 3 MegaPixels. Photographers will appreciate the ease of use afforded by Dual Image Stabilization which combines optical image and picture stabilization, and Fujifilm's acclaimed Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, while enjoying a wide dynamic range of 100-400% typically exclusive to the highest-end D-SLR cameras, and film simulation modes that only Fujifilm can provide.

"This camera benefits from the culmination of Fujifilm's 8th generation Super CCD and 3rd generation RP (Real Photo) Processor technology development," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "This powerful combination allows the S100FS, with its wide dynamic range, to capture the subtleties in color, tone and detail to deliver perfect shot conditions every time."

One-Of-A-Kind Lens Design for a One-Of-A-Kind Camera
Through a unique collaboration among Fujifilm and Fujinon R&D engineers, the development team approached the design effort as a single project, creating the lens and CCD for express function as a single unit. This design allows the ultra-high precision Fujinon lens to achieve maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 28mm-400mm equivalent and aperture stop settings. Because of the composite body and lens structure, there is no penetration of dirt and dust onto the CCD of a bright F 2.8 (wide angle) or F5.3 (telephoto).

A Feature Set Borrowed From the S5 Pro
Fujifilm's engineers have incorporated some of the FinePix S5 Pro's features that have been most appreciated by professional photographers, including film simulation modes and settings that expand the camera's dynamic range. The FinePix S100FS has an extended dynamic range (100% , 200% , 400% ) that is similar to that of negative film, thanks to the newly developed 2/3" 11.1 megapixel SuperCCD VIII "HR" and the new RP Processor III. This camera prevents overexposure and underexposure, regardless of whether the subject is a landscape or a portrait, and Fujifilm's unique Film Simulation modes (FS) allow photographers to select the ideal "film" mode for the scene with a choice of four modes that optimize for portraiture, low-contrast (soft), vibrant colors (Velvia), or general use (Provia). Only Fujifilm has developed its camera technology from its photographic heritage in film which uniquely gives subtle changes in tone and color reproduction to provide the photographer the widest technical range for the best creative expression possible.

Face Detection 2.0 with Automatic Red Eye Removal
Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection 2.0, featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal, debuted on the award-winning FinePix F50fd. This one-touch selectable mode enables cameras such as the FinePix S100FS to detect up to 10 human faces in a scene, correcting focus, exposure and white balance automatically as fast as 0.05 seconds to ensure that photos of human faces are clear and properly exposed, no matter where subjects are located within the frame. Fujifilm's Face Detection 2.0 has an advantage over the other face detection systems currently on the market because it can identify faces at extreme angles - even in full profile. The system allows for up to a 90 O movement in either direction for profiles and up to 135 O for leaning or lying down in either direction, for a total range of 270 O.

The Automatic Red-Eye Removal feature works in conjunction with Fujifilm's Face Detection 2.0, automatically correcting red-eye directly after the shot is taken and then saving both the original image and the corrected file. The user can then perform a side-by-side picture comparison in playback mode and select the most pleasing image.

Other noteworthy features found on the FinePix S100FS include:
Dual Image Stabilization: The FinePix S100FS features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization technology to ensure clean, sharp and blur-free images, even in low-light conditions. This combines image stabilization through a mechanically stabilized "floating" lens element to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, to reduce blur caused by subject movement, for the ultimate in stabilization technology.
Multi-Bracketing Function: The S100FS has three bracketing functions useful for high level photography: Film Simulation Bracketing, Dynamic Range Bracketing and AE Bracketing.
High-Speed Shooting: Reliable high-speed performance is possible through Fujifilm's newly developed Super CCD VIII "HR" and the new image processor RP (Real Photo) III Processor. At 3-MegaPixels, a maximum of 50 continuous shots at 7 frames/second is possible. In addition, 14 scene settings and customer settings can be selected, as can four auto-focus modes offer convenient high-speed, high-precision shooting and focusing for a diverse range of conditions.
Image Formats: Capture images in both JPEG and RAW format.
Movie Mode: Movie mode with sound at 30 frames per second in VGA quality, and zoom capable with manual zoom ring while in movie mode.
xD/SD/SD-HC Compatible Slot: The FinePix S100FS features an "xD/SD Compatible Slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.
2.5: Tiltable LCD: The FinePix s100FS features a tilting 2.5" LCD that makes it easy to frame shots from a variety of shooting positions.

The FinePix S100FS will debut in February 2008 at a retail price of $799.95.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm's F100fd Spec'd Out Point and Shoot has 12-megapixels, 2.7-inch LCD, 360-degree Facial Detection]]> The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd, which follows up the F40fd and F50fd with 12-megapixels, 360 degree facial detection, 2.7-inch LCD, dual image stabilization, red eye removal, dual-shot mode, and IR image transfer. It's a lot of spec for the money.

Available in March for $379. But with a lens and sensor likely smaller than the S100FS above, I'm doubting its better quality. Also, the 360 degree facial detection detects faces no matter where they're looking, which is nice, but not that useful unless you really enjoy taking pictures of people who don't want to be photographed.

FUJIFILM UNLEASHES LATEST F-SERIES POWERHOUSE

and Face Detection Technology 3.0

Valhalla, N.Y., January 24, 2008 - Following the long line of award-winning F-Series models, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc., today announced its latest and greatest, the FinePix F100fd digital camera.

Combining a 12-MegaPixel, 8th Generation Super CCD with a powerful Fujinon 5.0x wide angle optical zoom lens and a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, the FinePix F100fd is among Fujifilm's finest compact digital cameras. As with previous F-Series models such as the FinePix F31, F40fd and F50fd, the F100fd is a powerful, feature-packed compact digital camera aimed at consumers looking for something well above the average model. It offers the most advanced technologies available, including Wide Dynamic Range, Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 3.0 Technology with an Automatic Red Eye Removal function and ISO settings of up to an unprecedented ISO 12800 - so missing great shots is not an option.

"The FinePix F100fd demonstrates how consumers can ultimately benefit from Fujifilm's investment in professional photography," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "The features packed in to this camera like ISO ranges and wide dynamic ranges are unprecedented for a compact consumer model - they first appeared in our Professional line. Combine these advances with our new Face Detection 3.0's faster, 360 degree detection ranges and Dual Image Stabilization and you have the ultimate consumer digital photography experience."

Wide Dynamic Range
Dynamic Range, or the gradations of light that exist between bright and dark in any setting, can be easily detected by the human eye, but not by most cameras. Fujifilm expanded dynamic range capture functionality on the professional imaging side with its FinePix S3 Pro digital camera. The technology, now perfected in the FinePix S5 Pro camera, has been brought to the consumer in the FinePix F100fd. Through a combination of advances in Fujifilm's new Super CCD HR VIII and RP (Real Photo) Processor III, this wide dynamic range dramatically broadens tonal capability and guarantees exceptional rendition of photos with both bright highlights and dark shadows. This expansion of sensitivity captures greater detail, and subtle nuances of brightness and tonality that bring the photo closer to what the human eye actually sees.

Faster Face Detection 3.0
The FinePix F100fd is also equipped with Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection 3.0 Technology featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal. As with the original version of Face Detection, it can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as .036 seconds, automatically correcting focus, exposure, and white balance, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. Now, however, the FinePix F100fd is able to identify faces at much more extreme camera angles than before. The camera can register faces with up to 90O movement in either direction for profiles, and up to 360O. After the shot is taken, it instantly corrects red eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file...automatically

The FinePix F100fd features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization mode which combines a mechanically stabilized Super CCD sensor with high ISO sensitivities for total anti-blur protection. The combination of these technologies reduces the "blur" effect from the photographer's hand-shake and subject movement even further to provide the highest quality digital pictures yet, with sharp, clean and clear results. Thanks to the 8th generation FinePix Super CCD-HR chip and the RP Processor III, the Finepix F100fd can utilize ISO settings of up to ISO 3200 at full resolution and an amazing ISO 12800 at reduced resolution1, capturing stunning images even in low light while preserving the natural color and clarity of the shot.

In addition to these advances, the FinePix F100fd possesses a number of other impressive features:
Dual Image Stabilization: Combine mechanical image stabilization with the effects produced with higher ISO.
Continuous Shooting: Top/Final 3 at 1.7 frames per second at full resolution and Top/Final 12 at 5 frames per second at 3-MegaPixels.
High Speed Playback: No waiting for high resolution images to load during play back. The FinePix F100fd can display images at full resolution at 10 frames per second.
Portrait Enhancer Mode: Mimicking a professional photo studio setting, by using Face Detection and preset camera settings, Portrait Enhancer minimizes fine lines and small skin blemishes for smooth, natural looking portraits.
Dual Shot Mode: In this selectable mode, the FinePix F100fd quickly shoots two images in rapid succession - one with the flash and one without - and saves both. This convenient function lets users perform a comparison at their convenience and select the most pleasing image.
Special Scene: The FinePix F100fd has 16 pre-programmed scenes, including a special underwater scene mode for use with a special underwater casing. Also, a Blog mode that automatically reduces the size of copied images for easy posting to a blog, Web page or email attachment.
Micro Thumbnail: A playback feature that allows for viewing an index-style print on the LCD. The FinePix F100fd will show up to 100 images in micro form, then the control buttons are used to select specific images. An innovative wheel navigation dial makes it easy to quickly find a single image by being able to jump to particular segments of images in the time sequence.
IrSimple™: Infrared communication via IrSimple™ technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to a compatible device.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: The FinePix F100fd features a "xD/SD Compatible slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.

The FinePix F100fd will debut in March 2008 at a retail price of $379.95.

FUJIFILM GENERATION Z STYLE-CAM GETS AN UPGRADE The New 10 MP FinePix Z20fd Boasts New Colors, New Video Technology and New Dual Blog Mode

Valhalla, N.Y., January 24, 2008 - Continuing the tradition started by its stylish predecessor, the FinePix Z10fd, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today unveiled the FinePix Z20fd, a new ultra-glam digital camera packed with useful features that let you face it, beam it, blog it and now roll it with a new MPEG-4 movie recording mode for the movie-crazed Generation Z.

The 10-MegaPixel FinePix Z20fd comes in four luminous colors - Jet Black, Wasabi Green, Hot Pink and Ice Blue - an ultra-portable design, a Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" LCD screen and packs 45MB of internal memory to give you some extra room when your memory card is full. The style-savvy FinePix Z20fd also introduces Fujifilm's handy new Dual Blog Mode that automatically resizes any still image or movie you've captured, letting you post pictures and videos to blogs, video-sharing websites like YouTube, or e-mail to friends with ease.

As with the FinePix Z10fd, the Z20fd also allows picture takers to Face It with Fujifilm's innovative Face Detection Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal for capturing the ultimate group shots and Beam It with Fujifilm's IrSimpleTM technology to share the image instantly with friends. A one-touch selectable mode that identifies up to 10 human faces in a scene, Face Detection Technology sets the correct focus for a chosen primary face and exposure for all detected faces automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. After the shot is taken, each detected face is instantly checked for red eye; if found, it is corrected automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it later. Fujifilm's IrSimpleTM technology allows for fast, easy wireless image transfer to any IrSimpleTM equipped device.

Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology uses higher sensitivities — up to ISO 1600 in the Z20fd — and faster shutter and operational speeds, that help reduce camera shake, allowing photographers to capture the moment just as it was meant to be captured.

This high-style camera can also Roll It with an impressive Movie mode, capturing full motion MPEG4 video with the touch of a separate movie shutter button. Using the Successive Movie mode, in-camera editing allows for the creation of a 60 second movie clip, even when shooting in two or more scenes is desired. Start and restart multiple times to build a 60-second compilation, and edit the start and end points.

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix Z20fd is packed with the following extraordinary features:
Dual Shutter Releases: One button for still capture, one for movie record, for ease of use.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene, and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the Z20fd to enable the camera to use less flash, preventing that "blasted with light" effect that so many digital camera flashes leave you with. The result is pleasing, natural tones with no flash "wash-out".
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix Z20fd quickly shoots two images in succession — one with and one without the flash — saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot picture comparison and decide whether the FinePix Z20fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Special Scene Modes: The FinePix Z20fd has 16 scene positions including Fireworks, Beach and Snow, offering a one-touch setting for almost any situation.
xD / SD / SDHC Compatible slot: A single media slot that accepts both xD Picture Card and SD/SDHC media cards.
Stamp It: Add a little fun to your images by "stamping" a variety of fun designs to up to three detected faces in your shots!
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery.

"Fujifilm introduced the FinePix Z10fd in 2007 to address the digital demands of a younger generation that weren't being met. However, like any product targeted towards this fast moving demographic, it needs to adapt rapidly to the latest trends to be successful and, the FinePix Z20fd does just that." said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "With new technology and features, like Dual-Blog Mode, the Z20fd provides Generation Z with a convenient all-in-one device to capture all their favorite moments in style."

The FinePix Z20fd will debut in late March at a retail price of $199.95.

<![CDATA[Best Point-and-Shoot Cameras of 2007]]> Not all of us like fitting a DSLR in our pants when we go on vacation, which is why DigitalCameraInfo's best point-and-shoot cameras is useful for just about everyone. They graded on different criteria, with the Fuji F50fd taking the prize in resolution, the Sony T100 in least image noise, the Canon A570IS in color accuracy, the Sony H7 in low light and the Canon S5 IS in video. There's no one camera that dominates more than one spot, so it's mostly up to you and where you'll snap pics to decide which P&S to buy. It's too bad DCI didn't rate how well these cameras can fit into a pocket, which is as important as anything else they tested for. [DigitalCameraInfo]

<![CDATA[Fuji Gives In and Whores Megapixels Like Everyone Else?]]> A few months ago, I happily wrote a post about Fuji camera's continuing decision to build sensors with fewer megapixels in exchange for better light sensitivity. Apparently, that philosophy has not kept up. Proof: Old generation Fuji point and shoots like the F30/31 are going for more than double the original retail price on eBay ($400-$500!) as enthusiasts reject the newer F50 camera with double the MP and worse image quality in dim conditions. <![CDATA[Writeable, Color e-paper ReKindles Our Interest]]> Fuji Xerox has just demonstrated what may be the Holy Grail of e-paper—probably not the "E-Ink" technology found inside the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, but something similar—a prototype display that a user and write on. Three layers of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals are used (red, green and blue), meaning the display has a gel-like base.

Still flexible, the display can recognize "optical" writing, though probably not quickly. An eyes-on report mentions that the refresh rate is under a second, which while probably fast enough for quick marks, is not what you want to be handwriting a letter on. But we just had our boobie doodles in mind anyway. [techon]

<![CDATA[Fujifilm's F50fd Mighty 12MP Slimcam Busting with High Tech]]> Here's an interesting combo — 12MP in a slim camera body. That's a bump from 8MP in the F40fd, which is weird because Fuji doesn't often engage in these MP cock fights. Anyhow, the 7th generation CCD sensor is pared with a 3x zoom, face detection that can, like other Fuji's equipped with, focus and expose correctly for 10 faces in frame, and now remove red eye, this one for faces at extreme angles of 135-degrees. I swear. "Dual Image stabilization" combines high ISOs (1600, or 6400 in reduced res!) on top of mechanical sensor shift. Confusingly, this high tech camera goes for $300, less than other cameras in the line that do fewer MP in bigger packages. Must be the 3x zoom holding it back from a higher price point.

FUJIFILM ANNOUNCES 12 MEGAPIXEL COMPACT POWERHOUSE FinePix F50fd Ups Ante With Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0 Technology and ISO Levels Of Up To 6400

Valhalla, N.Y., July 26, 2007 - Digital photographers looking for a top-of-the line compact digital camera can now take advantage of the latest in Fujifilm's F-Series digital cameras with the 12-Megapixel FinePix F50fd. Following a long line of award winning F-Series models, the FinePix F50fd, like the FinePix F31fd and F40fd before it, offers consumers a super-compact digital camera that takes beautiful shots with the most advanced features and technology available, so that missing great shots is not an option.

Combining a 12-MegaPixel, 7th Generation Super CCD with a 3.0x optical zoom and a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, the FinePix F50fd is a compact powerhouse that incorporates all the features users have come to expect from Fujifilm's more advanced digital cameras. With the addition of Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal function, and ISO settings of up to ISO 6400, the F50fd takes compact digital cameras to the next level, arming users with a host of new features and enabling them to take pictures never before possible.

Face Detection 2.0 - The Next Generation
Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection Technology also gets an upgrade in the F50fd with the arrival of Face Detection 2.0, featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal. As with the original version of Face Detection, it can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as 5/100's of a second, correcting focus, exposure, and white balance automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. Face Detection 2.0 adds to this technology by being able to identify faces at much more extreme camera angles than before. No longer does the camera need a head-on shot to identify a face, because now even a profile will do - with up to 90O movement in either direction for profiles, and up to 135O for leaning or lying down in either direction, for a total range of 270O.

Additional improvements to Face Detection 2.0 include a new Automatic Red-Eye Removal feature that automatically corrects red-eye directly after the shot is taken and then saves both the original and the corrected image file.

Dual Image Stabilization
To ensure that users achieve even greater blur-free pictures, the FinePix F50fd adds to Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization mode to create the improved Dual Image Stabilization mode. This combines a mechanically stabilized CCD sensor with high ISO sensitivities for Total Anti-Blur protection. The combination of these two different approaches reduces the "blur" effect from the photographer's hand-shake and subject movement even further to provide the highest quality digital pictures yet, with sharp, clean and clear results.

Not much light? Not a Problem!
All too often, digital photographers run into problems when taking pictures in low-light or dimly-lit situations and have to rely on the flash which can lead to over-exposed and washed-out shots. The FinePix F50fd builds on the great strides previous Fujifilm digicams have made with low light photography and allows users to effortlessly capture the moment as their eye sees it, with tremendous clarity and low noise, using Fujifilm's Real Photo technology. Thanks to the 7th generation FinePix Super CCD-HR chip and the RP Processor II, the Finepix F50fd can utilize ISO settings of up to ISO1600 at full resolution and an amazing ISO 6400 at reduced resolution1, capturing stunning images even in low light while preserving the natural color and clarity of the shot.

In addition to these advancements, the FinePix F50fd possesses a number of other impressive features:
Portrait Enhancer Mode: Mimicking a professional photo studio setting, by using Face Detection and preset camera settings, Portrait Enhancer minimizes fine lines and small skin blemishes for smooth, natural looking portraits.
Dual Shot Mode: In this selectable mode, the FinePix F50fd quickly shoots two images in rapid succession — one with the flash and one without - and saves both. This convenient function lets the user perform a comparison at their convenience and select the most pleasing image.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash (Intelligent Flash) detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix F50fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a "washed-out" effect. And with an automatic pop-up flash, it's always ready when you need it.
Full Manual Photographic Control: Gives the user total control with manual adjustment options for settings on the camera (resolution, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc), and is desirable by the photo enthusiasts/advanced photographers.
GUI Micro Thumbnail: A new playback feature that allows for viewing an index print on the LCD. The F50fd will show up to 100 images in micro form, then the control buttons are used to move over specific images and select them. This makes it easy to quickly find a single image by being able to jump to particular segments of images in the time sequence. So rather than using the left/right arrows to move through one image at a time, you can move up/down/left/right and then select the image you want to view. The back button takes you back to the thumbnail view in one step. The micro view lets you get close to the image you want, and then scroll to find the specific picture. As memory cards become larger, and devices become as much about sharing images as capturing them, this is a handy feature to enable the user to find specific images quicker.
IrSimpleTM: Infrared communication via IrSimpleTM technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to a compatible device.
Special Scene and Blog Modes: The FinePix F50fd has 16 pre-programmed scenes, including a special underwater scene mode for use with a special underwater casing. In the Blog mode, the FinePix F50fd copies and automatically reduces the size of copied images for easy posting to a blog, Web page or as an attachment to email for easy sharing with friends and family while maintaining the original file.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: The FinePix F50fd features a "xD/SD Compatible slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 230 shots).

"Fujifilm continues to push the technology envelope with the latest in a long line of award winning F-Series digital cameras," said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "With the introduction of Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0, Automatic Red-Eye Removal, and even higher ISO levels, the FinePix F50fd provides users with a powerful compact digital camera that makes it easier than ever for any level photographer to get professional looking photographs."

The FinePix F50fd will debut in September 2007 at a retail price of $299.95.

1ISO levels of 6400 are available at 3MP, or lower, resolution; ISO levels of 3200 are attainable at 6MP, or lower; and ISO levels of 1600 are attainable at full resolution.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm FinePix Z10fd Slim and Colorful 7MP Fashion Cam]]> This is the most colorful and cheesy of Fuji's camera blitz today. It's a slim fashion phone that the press release claims, to "flirt with youth." Never mind the generation Z target demographic, the Z10fd has 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch lcd, slideshow mode, face detection tech with auto red eye removal, IR beaming, a blogging mode which reduces photo size on cam for EZ downloadin' to myspace, etc.

It does 320x240 video capture, can scale the power of its flash, has dual shot mode for back to back shots (with and without flash). and SD card compatibility on top of the crappy xD flavor we've come to not ever, ever use. The Li-on battery is good for 200 shots. The camera takes photos at up to 1600 ISO, which is what they market as image stabilization. Not really honest, if you ask me.

Competition includes the Nikon Coolpix S200, Sony's T100, and one of the random powershot cameras (possibly the SD1000 or SD750).

FUJIFILM TAKES ON GENERATION 'Z' The New 7.2 MP FinePix Z10fd Style-Cam Features Cutting Edge Technology that Flirts with Today's Youth

Face_it, Beam_it, Blog_it
With endless possibilities the FinePix Z10fd makes it easy and fun to stay connected with friends and family and share all life's moments through technology

Face_it.
Capturing the ultimate party pictures will never be an issue with the FinePix Z10fd, as it features Fujifilm's innovative Face Detection Technology. A one-touch selectable mode that identifies up to 10 human faces in a scene, Face Detection Technology sets the correct focus for a chosen primary face and exposure for all detected faces automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. It can cope with back-lit scenes such as concerts and it also comes in handy for capturing the perfect self portrait. The Z10 also includes a new Automatic Red Eye Removal feature, that works in conjunction with Face Detection. Red eye is a common complaint given by 60% of digital camera users. Z10 instantly checks each detected face for red eye, and if it's found, corrects it automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded.

Beam_it.
The FinePix Z10fd comes equipped with Fujifilm's innovative IrSimpleTM technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to any IrSimpleTM equipped device. With the FinePix Z10fd you can capture the moment, point to a similar device and share the image instantly with friends - so instead of making an innocent r take the group photo with five different cameras, they'll only have to take it once and IrSimpleTM handles the rest.

Blog_it.
Also making life easier for the bloggers of the world, the FinePix Z10fd comes equipped with Fujifilm's handy Blog Mode that lets you post pictures to blogs, websites, auctions, or e-mail with ease by copying and automatically resizing any image you've captured to a properly sized 640x480 (VGA) (or 320 x 240) image size, right in the camera, saving time from downloading it and adjusting it on your PC.

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix Z10fd is hooked up with the following fantastic features:
Picture Stabilization: Picture Stabilization utilizes higher sensitivities, up to ISO 1600 in the Z10fd, (with an incredibly high signal to noise ratio for clean images), and faster shutter and operational speeds to help reduce camera shake, freeze subject movement and improve low light background detail.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene, and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the Z10fd to enable the camera to use less flash, preventing that "blasted with light" effect that so many digital camera flashes leave you with. The result is pleasing, natural tones with no flash "wash-out".
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix Z10fd quickly shoots two images in succession — one with and one without the flash — saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot picture comparison and decide whether the FinePix Z10fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Special Scene Modes: The FinePix Z10fd has 14 scene positions including Fireworks, Beach and Snow, offering a one-touch setting for almost any situation.
xD / SD / SDHC Compatible slot: A new single media slot accepts both xD Picture Card and SD/SDHC media cards. One slot - two media options.
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 200 shots).

"Fujifilm recognized that today's younger generation wants to be connected with their friends at all times and that there wasn't a digital camera manufacturer that really addressed this." said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "We decided to create a camera that would mesh our latest technological advancements with today's popular trends and styles, and came up with the Z10fd."

Along with a myriad of fun downloads and interactive displays, aspiring photographers between the ages of 18 and 24 will have the chance to submit original photos in a competition that will award 4 lucky winners with a VIP trip to New York to attend the Z10fd launch party in October.

The FinePix Z10fd will debut in late September at a retail price of $199.95.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd has 8MP, 18x Zoom and 6400 ISO (Kinda)]]> I've never wanted a Fujifilm camera quite so badly as this S8000fd, the successor to the S6500fd, one of the original face recognition cams. First off, its been bumped from 6 to 8MP, still lower than the competition, but for the sake of better light sensitivity. Running in 4MP mode, more than enough for most shots, it can capture an astounding 6400 ISO (at full res it hits 1600). Then there's the gorgeous 18x zoom, which is the equivalent of a 27mm to 486mm lens.

Of course, to shoot at nearly 500mm, you'll find the dual image stabilization handy, which utilizes mechanical sensor shift, and image processing. Face recognition works to focus and expose up to 10 faces, as always, but now it does red eye reduction, on the fly. There's a 2.5 inch LCD or an LCD-viewfinder, which refreshes at 60fps. The camera itself can shoot at 15FPS at 2MP, so its questionable whether or not it'll be even half that fast at decent res. As far as video modes go, this one shoots at 640 x 480 at 30FPS.

What seals the deal is that this camera drops monogamous relations with the shitty xD format cards, picking up SD and SD-HC compatibility, too. The whole rig operates on 4 AA batteries. Due in September at $400.

FUJIFILM FINEPIX S8000fd GETS CLOSE UP WITH INDUSTRY LEADING 18X OPTICAL ZOOM WITH FACE DETECTION

Features Advanced SLR Functionality at a Consumer Price-tag

Valhalla, NY, July 26, 2007 - Fujifilm is bringing the wide-angle, long zoom technology to the consumer market with today's introduction of the FinePix S8000fd. The 8-MegaPixel, SLR-styled camera features on M of the largest optical zooms on a fixed-lens camera in the industry, and introduces Fujifilm's latest 'Dual Image Stabilization,' plus ISO settings of up to ISO6400 (at 50% resolution) - all features you would expect in a high-end digital camera, but at a price point consumers can afford.

Flexibility & Control
The S8000fd comes equipped with Fujinon's 18x Wide Angle Optical Zoom lens, offering unprecedented flexibility in a compact SLR body style camera. With a 27mm-486mm equivalent, it's all the lens you need in one device. The fixed lens eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, and it's a sealed system, which prevents dust contamination - the #1 D-SLR repair complaint.

The S8000fd also features a full-resolution ISO equivalency of ISO 1600, a rarity in consumer-level digicams. The S8000fd can achieve ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 at 50% resolution, settings that are rare at the consumer level. Such high light sensitivities allow for faster shutter speeds, which reduce blurring caused by both camera shake and subject movement.

Dual Image Stabilization
To offer the best of both worlds where image stabilization is concerned, the S8000fd uses 'Dual Image Stabilization'; a brand new combination of mechanical sensor shift stabilization with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology which utilizes a combination of higher ISO levels and faster shutter speeds. This 'Dual Image Stabilization' steadies the photographer's hand, and protects against camera shake and subject movement for total anti-blur protection. As a result, an increase in clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions or when shooting moving subjects.

Face Detection Technology
The S8000fd features Fujifilm's Face Detection technology, identifying up to 10 faces in a framed scene. Once faces are identified and prioritized, the S8000fd adjusts its focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. Face Detection technology on the S8000fd also includes a new Automatic Red Eye Removal feature. Red eye is a common complaint given by 60% of digital camera users. In this mode, the camera instantly checks each detected fact for red eye, and if it's found, corrects it automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded.

Other helpful features found on the FinePix S8000fd for top-quality picture-taking include:
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash (Intelligent Flash) detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix S8000fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a "washed-out" effect.
Movie Mode: Capture VGA quality action clips in 640x480 resolution at 30 fps with sound. Great for when you're out and you don't have your video camera on-hand.
Scene modes: A wide range of more than a dozen pre-programmed scene modes provides top-quality photos in a range of shooting conditions.
High-Speed Continuous Shooting Modes: Action comes at you fast. With four speed options, the S8000fd has the ability to capture up to 15 frames per second (at 2 MP resolution) and never misses the shot.
High Resolution LCD: The 2.5" LCD display offers 230k pixels of resolution with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): Rather than framing your shots with the 2.5" high resolution LCD, the S8000fd offers an electronic viewfinder to eye up the best shot with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: A new single media slot accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity (SD-HC) cards too.
Operates on 4xAA Batteries: The ultimate in convenience and accessibility, using AA batteries means in a pinch, more batteries are just moments away.

"With the FinePix S8000fd, Fujifilm is bringing its heritage in photography and industry leading technology to its customers by offering them incredible optical zoom and ISO levels in a camera priced at a level they can afford," said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "By styling advanced DSLR features in a compact, easy to use digicam, we're offering users the tools to capture photos you would swear were captured by a pro."

The FinePix S8000fd will debut in September 2007 at a retail price of $399.95.

<![CDATA[Fujifilm FinePix F480 Cheapie and the Even Cheaper A920]]> Fuji has two new entry-level digicams coming down the line. First is the Finepix A920, sporting a 9-mp CCD, 4x zoom and a 2.7-inch screen all for $199.95. But if you need your camera to be a little more on the trim side than you'll want to take a look at the F480. This guy has similar specs to the A920 aside from a slightly smaller 8-mp sensor and is .4-inches thinner, but is also a bit cheaper at $179.95. Looks like the Canon PowerShot A450 and the Canon Coolpix L12 have some new competition.
