Hands On Fujifilm S100FS Faux DSLR: Why? Okay, I get prosumer cams like Canon's G9 or even Fuji's other big-zoom shooters. The S100FS, I do not get. It's the same size as a DSLR. It costs the same as a DSLR ($799). But it's not a DSLR. And not in a good way.

Its showstopper feature, the ridonkulous ISO ratings, fell way short, though you should keep in mind this is a pre-production model, and it could get much better before it ships: A few snaps shot at 6400 had mad noise, evident even in playback on its LCD screen. That aside, I still can't really feel for this camera. The only feature I can say is neat is the tilting screen but Sony has it too on their new alphas. Maybe some more extensive testing would reveal otherwise, but my based on initial impressions, if you're going to pick up a camera that weighs, feels and is priced like a DSLR, just get a DSLR. FUJIFILM ANNOUNCES 18X ULTRA-ZOOM CAMERA FOR BUDDING PROSUMERS FinePix S8100fd Offers Advanced Features at an Affordable Price

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today announced the launch of the long zoom, SLR-styled FinePix S8100fd digital camera. Perfect for photographers seeking a step-up digital camera, Fujifilm's FinePix S8100fd combines user-friendliness with long-zoom flexibility and high speed shooting modes that are rare at the consumer level and perfect for great action shots.

Continuing on the success of the wide-angle, long zoom FinePix S8000fd, the 10-MegaPixel FinePix S8100fd integrates a Fujinon 18x Wide Angle Optical Zoom fixed lens, which offers a 27mm-486mm equivalent and allows the user to achieve greater range than ever before. The sealed, fixed-lens system prevents dust contamination and eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, making it an easy-to-use, affordable alternative to the complex D-SLR system.

Features Born From Face Detection
Fujifilm's innovative face detection technology, recognized with a 2007 'Best of What's New Award' from Popular Science Magazine, has enabled a number of advanced features that advanced consumer photographer will enjoy. Face Detection operates by identifying and prioritizing up to 10 faces in a framed scene and then adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. After the shot is captured the automatic Red Eye Removal feature instantly checks each detected face for red eye and if it's found, corrects it in the camera automatically, saving the time-consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded. A new Instant Zoom function captures moving subjects at high zoom settings. After zooming on a subject, a single button gives an additional 1.4x or 2x digital zoom at the center focus region of the frame. Zoom Bracketing performs a similar action using Fujifilm's face detection technology to lock its zoom action on a subject's face automatically as it enters the shot.

Like the FinePix S8000fd, the FinePix S8100fd features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization, a marriage of mechanical sensor shift stabilization, to steady the photographer's hand, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, which uses fast shutter speeds and ISO levels of up to ISO 6400 (at 5 MegaPixels) for total anti-blur protection. As a result, an increase in clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions. A Continuous Shooting Mode makes it easy to shoot moving subjects like pets and kids. This new feature allows high-speed shooting of up to 33 frames at 13.5 frames per second (at 3 megapixels; 6.8 frames per second at 5 megapixels). And with high speed playback at 10 frames per second you can be sure you've captured all of the action.

Other helpful features found on the FinePix S8100fd for top-quality picture-taking include:
i-Flash: i-Flash Intelligent Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix S8100fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a washed-out effect. And with an automatic pop-up flash, it's always ready when you need it.
Full Manual Photographic Control: Photo enthusiasts and advanced photographers have total control with manual adjustment options for various camera settings including resolution, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and more.
Scene modes: A wide range of 13 pre-programmed scene modes provides top-quality photos in a variety of shooting conditions.
Super Macro Mode: Full-frame close-ups are easy with this feature that lets the photographer to get as close as 1cm (0.4 inch)
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix S8100fd quickly shoots two images in succession - one with and one without flash - saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot comparison and decide whether the FinePix S8100fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Movie Mode: VGA quality 30 frames per second with sound.
High Resolution LCD: The 2.5" Wide View LCD display offers 230,000 pixels of high resolution with a 60 frames per second refresh rate for smooth viewing.
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): In addition to framing your shots with the 2.5" high resolution LCD, the S8100fd also offers a high resolution electronic viewfinder to eye up the best shot with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: A single media slot accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity (SD-HC) cards too.
Operates on 4xAA Batteries: The ultimate in convenience and accessibility, using AA batteries means in a pinch, more batteries are just moments away.

"This is a work-horse camera for photographers who want the convenience of an SLR-like model, a powerful zoom, high-speed continuous shooting and the ease of use that is often relegated to more compact model," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "The bonus that comes with the S8100fd is the set of features made possible by Fujifilm's advances in Face Detection and Dual Image Stabilization technology."

The FinePix S8100fd will debut in March 2008 at a retail price of $399.

Fujifilm's Advanced S100FS Drops the Megapixels to Pick Up Light I'm a fan of Fujifilm's "Most advanced" S100FS, even though its 11MP rating is less than the F series point and shoot they just released. Why? Because screw MP ratings! By dropping the MP count even further to 6, it can hit a light sensitivity of ISO 6400; drop it to 3MP and you've got an astounding 10,000 ISO. That's a better use of spare sensor space than goosing up to a MP rating good for poster sized prints. Although it borrows heavily from Fuji's S5 Pro camera in the feature department, this camera has no direct predecessor. The FS in the S100FS's model name stands for Film Substitute.

The camera has a 14.3x lens, adjustable manually, with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 28-400mm. It's paired with a 2.5 tiltable LCD and both optical and digital image stabilization. The camera can also handle a new wide dynamic range of 100-400% for accurate capture of high contrast scenes. There are also simulation modes that replicate after the colorful characteristics of Fuji's film. The camera has face recognition, and although Fuji pioneered the tech, I'm not sure they've kept up with the times; this system does red eye and can detect 10 faces in a scene, but Sony's system can detect smiles and manually focus on children or adult faces.

FUJIFILM UNVEILS ITS MOST ADVANCED CONSUMER MODEL TO DATE: THE FINEPIX S100FS DIGITAL CAMERA

Advanced Prosumer Model Offers DSLR Control and Functionality

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today unveiled the FinePix S100FS (Film Simulation) digital camera, its most advanced SLR-styled camera to date. The FinePix S100FS provides an all-in-one solution for photo enthusiasts and advanced amateur photographers seeking the manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, without the hassle and expense of additional lenses and other accessories.

The FinePix S100FS is equipped with a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, Fujifilm's 8th generation Super CCD sensor with 11 MegaPixels, RP III processor, 2.5" tiltable LCD and ISO capabilities of up to ISO 6400 at 6MegaPixel and an incredible ISO 10,000 at 3 MegaPixels. Photographers will appreciate the ease of use afforded by Dual Image Stabilization which combines optical image and picture stabilization, and Fujifilm's acclaimed Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, while enjoying a wide dynamic range of 100-400% typically exclusive to the highest-end D-SLR cameras, and film simulation modes that only Fujifilm can provide.

"This camera benefits from the culmination of Fujifilm's 8th generation Super CCD and 3rd generation RP (Real Photo) Processor technology development," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "This powerful combination allows the S100FS, with its wide dynamic range, to capture the subtleties in color, tone and detail to deliver perfect shot conditions every time."

One-Of-A-Kind Lens Design for a One-Of-A-Kind Camera
Through a unique collaboration among Fujifilm and Fujinon R&D engineers, the development team approached the design effort as a single project, creating the lens and CCD for express function as a single unit. This design allows the ultra-high precision Fujinon lens to achieve maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 28mm-400mm equivalent and aperture stop settings. Because of the composite body and lens structure, there is no penetration of dirt and dust onto the CCD of a bright F 2.8 (wide angle) or F5.3 (telephoto).

A Feature Set Borrowed From the S5 Pro
Fujifilm's engineers have incorporated some of the FinePix S5 Pro's features that have been most appreciated by professional photographers, including film simulation modes and settings that expand the camera's dynamic range. The FinePix S100FS has an extended dynamic range (100% , 200% , 400% ) that is similar to that of negative film, thanks to the newly developed 2/3" 11.1 megapixel SuperCCD VIII "HR" and the new RP Processor III. This camera prevents overexposure and underexposure, regardless of whether the subject is a landscape or a portrait, and Fujifilm's unique Film Simulation modes (FS) allow photographers to select the ideal "film" mode for the scene with a choice of four modes that optimize for portraiture, low-contrast (soft), vibrant colors (Velvia), or general use (Provia). Only Fujifilm has developed its camera technology from its photographic heritage in film which uniquely gives subtle changes in tone and color reproduction to provide the photographer the widest technical range for the best creative expression possible.

Face Detection 2.0 with Automatic Red Eye Removal
Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection 2.0, featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal, debuted on the award-winning FinePix F50fd. This one-touch selectable mode enables cameras such as the FinePix S100FS to detect up to 10 human faces in a scene, correcting focus, exposure and white balance automatically as fast as 0.05 seconds to ensure that photos of human faces are clear and properly exposed, no matter where subjects are located within the frame. Fujifilm's Face Detection 2.0 has an advantage over the other face detection systems currently on the market because it can identify faces at extreme angles - even in full profile. The system allows for up to a 90 O movement in either direction for profiles and up to 135 O for leaning or lying down in either direction, for a total range of 270 O.

The Automatic Red-Eye Removal feature works in conjunction with Fujifilm's Face Detection 2.0, automatically correcting red-eye directly after the shot is taken and then saving both the original image and the corrected file. The user can then perform a side-by-side picture comparison in playback mode and select the most pleasing image.

Other noteworthy features found on the FinePix S100FS include:
Dual Image Stabilization: The FinePix S100FS features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization technology to ensure clean, sharp and blur-free images, even in low-light conditions. This combines image stabilization through a mechanically stabilized "floating" lens element to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, to reduce blur caused by subject movement, for the ultimate in stabilization technology.
Multi-Bracketing Function: The S100FS has three bracketing functions useful for high level photography: Film Simulation Bracketing, Dynamic Range Bracketing and AE Bracketing.
High-Speed Shooting: Reliable high-speed performance is possible through Fujifilm's newly developed Super CCD VIII "HR" and the new image processor RP (Real Photo) III Processor. At 3-MegaPixels, a maximum of 50 continuous shots at 7 frames/second is possible. In addition, 14 scene settings and customer settings can be selected, as can four auto-focus modes offer convenient high-speed, high-precision shooting and focusing for a diverse range of conditions.
Image Formats: Capture images in both JPEG and RAW format.
Movie Mode: Movie mode with sound at 30 frames per second in VGA quality, and zoom capable with manual zoom ring while in movie mode.
xD/SD/SD-HC Compatible Slot: The FinePix S100FS features an "xD/SD Compatible Slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.
2.5: Tiltable LCD: The FinePix s100FS features a tilting 2.5" LCD that makes it easy to frame shots from a variety of shooting positions.

The FinePix S100FS will debut in February 2008 at a retail price of $799.95.

Fujifilm's F100fd Spec'd Out Point and Shoot has 12-megapixels, 2.7-inch LCD, 360-degree Facial Detection The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd, which follows up the F40fd and F50fd with 12-megapixels, 360 degree facial detection, 2.7-inch LCD, dual image stabilization, red eye removal, dual-shot mode, and IR image transfer. It's a lot of spec for the money.

Available in March for $379. But with a lens and sensor likely smaller than the S100FS above, I'm doubting its better quality. Also, the 360 degree facial detection detects faces no matter where they're looking, which is nice, but not that useful unless you really enjoy taking pictures of people who don't want to be photographed.

FUJIFILM UNLEASHES LATEST F-SERIES POWERHOUSE
FinePix F100fd Packs 12MP Super CCD, ISO Equivalency Speeds Up To 12800
and Face Detection Technology 3.0

Valhalla, N.Y., January 24, 2008 - Following the long line of award-winning F-Series models, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc., today announced its latest and greatest, the FinePix F100fd digital camera.

Combining a 12-MegaPixel, 8th Generation Super CCD with a powerful Fujinon 5.0x wide angle optical zoom lens and a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, the FinePix F100fd is among Fujifilm's finest compact digital cameras. As with previous F-Series models such as the FinePix F31, F40fd and F50fd, the F100fd is a powerful, feature-packed compact digital camera aimed at consumers looking for something well above the average model. It offers the most advanced technologies available, including Wide Dynamic Range, Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 3.0 Technology with an Automatic Red Eye Removal function and ISO settings of up to an unprecedented ISO 12800 - so missing great shots is not an option.

"The FinePix F100fd demonstrates how consumers can ultimately benefit from Fujifilm's investment in professional photography," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "The features packed in to this camera like ISO ranges and wide dynamic ranges are unprecedented for a compact consumer model - they first appeared in our Professional line. Combine these advances with our new Face Detection 3.0's faster, 360 degree detection ranges and Dual Image Stabilization and you have the ultimate consumer digital photography experience."

Wide Dynamic Range
Dynamic Range, or the gradations of light that exist between bright and dark in any setting, can be easily detected by the human eye, but not by most cameras. Fujifilm expanded dynamic range capture functionality on the professional imaging side with its FinePix S3 Pro digital camera. The technology, now perfected in the FinePix S5 Pro camera, has been brought to the consumer in the FinePix F100fd. Through a combination of advances in Fujifilm's new Super CCD HR VIII and RP (Real Photo) Processor III, this wide dynamic range dramatically broadens tonal capability and guarantees exceptional rendition of photos with both bright highlights and dark shadows. This expansion of sensitivity captures greater detail, and subtle nuances of brightness and tonality that bring the photo closer to what the human eye actually sees.

Faster Face Detection 3.0
The FinePix F100fd is also equipped with Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection 3.0 Technology featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal. As with the original version of Face Detection, it can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as .036 seconds, automatically correcting focus, exposure, and white balance, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. Now, however, the FinePix F100fd is able to identify faces at much more extreme camera angles than before. The camera can register faces with up to 90O movement in either direction for profiles, and up to 360O. After the shot is taken, it instantly corrects red eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file...automatically

The FinePix F100fd features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilization mode which combines a mechanically stabilized Super CCD sensor with high ISO sensitivities for total anti-blur protection. The combination of these technologies reduces the "blur" effect from the photographer's hand-shake and subject movement even further to provide the highest quality digital pictures yet, with sharp, clean and clear results. Thanks to the 8th generation FinePix Super CCD-HR chip and the RP Processor III, the Finepix F100fd can utilize ISO settings of up to ISO 3200 at full resolution and an amazing ISO 12800 at reduced resolution1, capturing stunning images even in low light while preserving the natural color and clarity of the shot.

In addition to these advances, the FinePix F100fd possesses a number of other impressive features:
Dual Image Stabilization: Combine mechanical image stabilization with the effects produced with higher ISO.
Continuous Shooting: Top/Final 3 at 1.7 frames per second at full resolution and Top/Final 12 at 5 frames per second at 3-MegaPixels.
High Speed Playback: No waiting for high resolution images to load during play back. The FinePix F100fd can display images at full resolution at 10 frames per second.
Portrait Enhancer Mode: Mimicking a professional photo studio setting, by using Face Detection and preset camera settings, Portrait Enhancer minimizes fine lines and small skin blemishes for smooth, natural looking portraits.
Dual Shot Mode: In this selectable mode, the FinePix F100fd quickly shoots two images in rapid succession - one with the flash and one without - and saves both. This convenient function lets users perform a comparison at their convenience and select the most pleasing image.
Special Scene: The FinePix F100fd has 16 pre-programmed scenes, including a special underwater scene mode for use with a special underwater casing. Also, a Blog mode that automatically reduces the size of copied images for easy posting to a blog, Web page or email attachment.
Micro Thumbnail: A playback feature that allows for viewing an index-style print on the LCD. The FinePix F100fd will show up to 100 images in micro form, then the control buttons are used to select specific images. An innovative wheel navigation dial makes it easy to quickly find a single image by being able to jump to particular segments of images in the time sequence.
IrSimpleā„¢: Infrared communication via IrSimpleā„¢ technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to a compatible device.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: The FinePix F100fd features a "xD/SD Compatible slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.

The FinePix F100fd will debut in March 2008 at a retail price of $379.95.

FUJIFILM GENERATION Z STYLE-CAM GETS AN UPGRADE The New 10 MP FinePix Z20fd Boasts New Colors, New Video Technology and New Dual Blog Mode

Valhalla, N.Y., January 24, 2008 - Continuing the tradition started by its stylish predecessor, the FinePix Z10fd, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today unveiled the FinePix Z20fd, a new ultra-glam digital camera packed with useful features that let you face it, beam it, blog it and now roll it with a new MPEG-4 movie recording mode for the movie-crazed Generation Z.

The 10-MegaPixel FinePix Z20fd comes in four luminous colors - Jet Black, Wasabi Green, Hot Pink and Ice Blue - an ultra-portable design, a Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" LCD screen and packs 45MB of internal memory to give you some extra room when your memory card is full. The style-savvy FinePix Z20fd also introduces Fujifilm's handy new Dual Blog Mode that automatically resizes any still image or movie you've captured, letting you post pictures and videos to blogs, video-sharing websites like YouTube, or e-mail to friends with ease.

As with the FinePix Z10fd, the Z20fd also allows picture takers to Face It with Fujifilm's innovative Face Detection Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal for capturing the ultimate group shots and Beam It with Fujifilm's IrSimpleTM technology to share the image instantly with friends. A one-touch selectable mode that identifies up to 10 human faces in a scene, Face Detection Technology sets the correct focus for a chosen primary face and exposure for all detected faces automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. After the shot is taken, each detected face is instantly checked for red eye; if found, it is corrected automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it later. Fujifilm's IrSimpleTM technology allows for fast, easy wireless image transfer to any IrSimpleTM equipped device.

Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology uses higher sensitivities — up to ISO 1600 in the Z20fd — and faster shutter and operational speeds, that help reduce camera shake, allowing photographers to capture the moment just as it was meant to be captured.

This high-style camera can also Roll It with an impressive Movie mode, capturing full motion MPEG4 video with the touch of a separate movie shutter button. Using the Successive Movie mode, in-camera editing allows for the creation of a 60 second movie clip, even when shooting in two or more scenes is desired. Start and restart multiple times to build a 60-second compilation, and edit the start and end points.

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix Z20fd is packed with the following extraordinary features:
Dual Shutter Releases: One button for still capture, one for movie record, for ease of use.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene, and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the Z20fd to enable the camera to use less flash, preventing that "blasted with light" effect that so many digital camera flashes leave you with. The result is pleasing, natural tones with no flash "wash-out".
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix Z20fd quickly shoots two images in succession — one with and one without the flash — saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot picture comparison and decide whether the FinePix Z20fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Special Scene Modes: The FinePix Z20fd has 16 scene positions including Fireworks, Beach and Snow, offering a one-touch setting for almost any situation.
xD / SD / SDHC Compatible slot: A single media slot that accepts both xD Picture Card and SD/SDHC media cards.
Stamp It: Add a little fun to your images by "stamping" a variety of fun designs to up to three detected faces in your shots!
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery.

"Fujifilm introduced the FinePix Z10fd in 2007 to address the digital demands of a younger generation that weren't being met. However, like any product targeted towards this fast moving demographic, it needs to adapt rapidly to the latest trends to be successful and, the FinePix Z20fd does just that." said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "With new technology and features, like Dual-Blog Mode, the Z20fd provides Generation Z with a convenient all-in-one device to capture all their favorite moments in style."

The FinePix Z20fd will debut in late March at a retail price of $199.95.

FUJIFILM DEBUTS NEW J-SERIES DIGITAL CAMERA LINE AT PMA 2008

New FinePix J10 and J50 Combine Style and Compact Form Factor
With Powerful Feature Sets Priced Under $200

Valhalla, NY, January 24, 2008 - FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. today announced the debut of a brand new J-Series of digital cameras with the FinePix J10 and J50. Designed for consumers seeking an affordable digital camera that doesn't compromise on features, the FinePix J10 and J50 provide a powerful, easy to use models that fit into a pocket or handbag for instant accessibility.

Housed in a compact chassis just 19mm thick, the FinePix J10 incorporates an 8.2-MegaPixel CCD sensor, a 2.5" LCD and a 3x Fujinon optical zoom lens that captures large groups or distant subjects with ease thanks to a 38mm-113mm equivalent. The FinePix J50 takes things one step further with an 8.2-MegaPixel CCD sensor, a high resolution 2.7", 230K pixel LCD and a Fujinon 5x optical zoom that provides a 37mm-185mm equivalent - this time housed in a chassis only 23mm thick.

The FinePix J10 is available in either Matte Black and Brushed Silver; the FinePix J50 is available in Brushed Silver. Both models use Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology to reduce blurry images that can be caused by camera shake or subject movement especially in low light settings. Automatically choosing the correct light sensitivity and best-matching shutter speed, the FinePix J10 and J50 help to freeze the action and produce the highest-quality digital pictures without the blur and noise often associated with low-light photographs.

"We wanted to provide consumers with an affordable, easy to use digital camera that still offered a competitive feature set," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "The new J-Series combines these advantages in a highly portable form factor making it easier than ever to ensure that you never miss a shot."

Fujifilm's new J-series models also offer the following attractive features:
Scene modes: Pre-programmed scene modes provides top-quality photos in a wide-range of shooting conditions. Both models have 15 scene modes.

Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery for extended shot life.

Fujifilm FinePix Z100fd, So Thin It's Anorexic Fujifilm has slimmed down its FinePix camera even more—now it's just 19.8 mm thick—but the redesigned FinePix Z100fd still manages to cram 8 megapixels of imaging goodness into its slim form factor. It's available in four color combinations, and even has a few smart features such as face detection technology that can identify 10 faces in the frame, sensibly focusing so all might be as sharp as possible. Looks like a lot of camera for $249.95, available this month. [FujiFilm Press Release]

Fuji Gives In and Whores Megapixels Like Everyone Else? A few months ago, I happily wrote a post about Fuji camera's continuing decision to build sensors with fewer megapixels in exchange for better light sensitivity. Apparently, that philosophy has not kept up. Proof: Old generation Fuji point and shoots like the F30/31 are going for more than double the original retail price on eBay ($400-$500!) as enthusiasts reject the newer F50 camera with double the MP and worse image quality in dim conditions. Fujifilm's F50fd Mighty 12MP Slimcam Busting with High Tech Here's an interesting combo — 12MP in a slim camera body. That's a bump from 8MP in the F40fd, which is weird because Fuji doesn't often engage in these MP cock fights. Anyhow, the 7th generation CCD sensor is pared with a 3x zoom, face detection that can, like other Fuji's equipped with, focus and expose correctly for 10 faces in frame, and now remove red eye, this one for faces at extreme angles of 135-degrees. I swear. "Dual Image stabilization" combines high ISOs (1600, or 6400 in reduced res!) on top of mechanical sensor shift. Confusingly, this high tech camera goes for $300, less than other cameras in the line that do fewer MP in bigger packages. Must be the 3x zoom holding it back from a higher price point.

FUJIFILM ANNOUNCES 12 MEGAPIXEL COMPACT POWERHOUSE FinePix F50fd Ups Ante With Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0 Technology and ISO Levels Of Up To 6400

Valhalla, N.Y., July 26, 2007 - Digital photographers looking for a top-of-the line compact digital camera can now take advantage of the latest in Fujifilm's F-Series digital cameras with the 12-Megapixel FinePix F50fd. Following a long line of award winning F-Series models, the FinePix F50fd, like the FinePix F31fd and F40fd before it, offers consumers a super-compact digital camera that takes beautiful shots with the most advanced features and technology available, so that missing great shots is not an option.

Combining a 12-MegaPixel, 7th Generation Super CCD with a 3.0x optical zoom and a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, the FinePix F50fd is a compact powerhouse that incorporates all the features users have come to expect from Fujifilm's more advanced digital cameras. With the addition of Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal function, and ISO settings of up to ISO 6400, the F50fd takes compact digital cameras to the next level, arming users with a host of new features and enabling them to take pictures never before possible.

Face Detection 2.0 - The Next Generation
Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection Technology also gets an upgrade in the F50fd with the arrival of Face Detection 2.0, featuring Automatic Red Eye Removal. As with the original version of Face Detection, it can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as 5/100's of a second, correcting focus, exposure, and white balance automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. Face Detection 2.0 adds to this technology by being able to identify faces at much more extreme camera angles than before. No longer does the camera need a head-on shot to identify a face, because now even a profile will do - with up to 90O movement in either direction for profiles, and up to 135O for leaning or lying down in either direction, for a total range of 270O.

Additional improvements to Face Detection 2.0 include a new Automatic Red-Eye Removal feature that automatically corrects red-eye directly after the shot is taken and then saves both the original and the corrected image file.

Dual Image Stabilization
To ensure that users achieve even greater blur-free pictures, the FinePix F50fd adds to Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization mode to create the improved Dual Image Stabilization mode. This combines a mechanically stabilized CCD sensor with high ISO sensitivities for Total Anti-Blur protection. The combination of these two different approaches reduces the "blur" effect from the photographer's hand-shake and subject movement even further to provide the highest quality digital pictures yet, with sharp, clean and clear results.

Not much light? Not a Problem!
All too often, digital photographers run into problems when taking pictures in low-light or dimly-lit situations and have to rely on the flash which can lead to over-exposed and washed-out shots. The FinePix F50fd builds on the great strides previous Fujifilm digicams have made with low light photography and allows users to effortlessly capture the moment as their eye sees it, with tremendous clarity and low noise, using Fujifilm's Real Photo technology. Thanks to the 7th generation FinePix Super CCD-HR chip and the RP Processor II, the Finepix F50fd can utilize ISO settings of up to ISO1600 at full resolution and an amazing ISO 6400 at reduced resolution1, capturing stunning images even in low light while preserving the natural color and clarity of the shot.

In addition to these advancements, the FinePix F50fd possesses a number of other impressive features:
Portrait Enhancer Mode: Mimicking a professional photo studio setting, by using Face Detection and preset camera settings, Portrait Enhancer minimizes fine lines and small skin blemishes for smooth, natural looking portraits.
Dual Shot Mode: In this selectable mode, the FinePix F50fd quickly shoots two images in rapid succession — one with the flash and one without - and saves both. This convenient function lets the user perform a comparison at their convenience and select the most pleasing image.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash (Intelligent Flash) detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix F50fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a "washed-out" effect. And with an automatic pop-up flash, it's always ready when you need it.
Full Manual Photographic Control: Gives the user total control with manual adjustment options for settings on the camera (resolution, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc), and is desirable by the photo enthusiasts/advanced photographers.
GUI Micro Thumbnail: A new playback feature that allows for viewing an index print on the LCD. The F50fd will show up to 100 images in micro form, then the control buttons are used to move over specific images and select them. This makes it easy to quickly find a single image by being able to jump to particular segments of images in the time sequence. So rather than using the left/right arrows to move through one image at a time, you can move up/down/left/right and then select the image you want to view. The back button takes you back to the thumbnail view in one step. The micro view lets you get close to the image you want, and then scroll to find the specific picture. As memory cards become larger, and devices become as much about sharing images as capturing them, this is a handy feature to enable the user to find specific images quicker.
IrSimpleTM: Infrared communication via IrSimpleTM technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to a compatible device.
Special Scene and Blog Modes: The FinePix F50fd has 16 pre-programmed scenes, including a special underwater scene mode for use with a special underwater casing. In the Blog mode, the FinePix F50fd copies and automatically reduces the size of copied images for easy posting to a blog, Web page or as an attachment to email for easy sharing with friends and family while maintaining the original file.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: The FinePix F50fd features a "xD/SD Compatible slot" which accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity/SD-HC cards too.
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 230 shots).

"Fujifilm continues to push the technology envelope with the latest in a long line of award winning F-Series digital cameras," said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "With the introduction of Dual Image Stabilization, Face Detection 2.0, Automatic Red-Eye Removal, and even higher ISO levels, the FinePix F50fd provides users with a powerful compact digital camera that makes it easier than ever for any level photographer to get professional looking photographs."

The FinePix F50fd will debut in September 2007 at a retail price of $299.95.

1ISO levels of 6400 are available at 3MP, or lower, resolution; ISO levels of 3200 are attainable at 6MP, or lower; and ISO levels of 1600 are attainable at full resolution.

Fujifilm FinePix Z10fd Slim and Colorful 7MP Fashion Cam This is the most colorful and cheesy of Fuji's camera blitz today. It's a slim fashion phone that the press release claims, to "flirt with youth." Never mind the generation Z target demographic, the Z10fd has 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch lcd, slideshow mode, face detection tech with auto red eye removal, IR beaming, a blogging mode which reduces photo size on cam for EZ downloadin' to myspace, etc.

It does 320x240 video capture, can scale the power of its flash, has dual shot mode for back to back shots (with and without flash). and SD card compatibility on top of the crappy xD flavor we've come to not ever, ever use. The Li-on battery is good for 200 shots. The camera takes photos at up to 1600 ISO, which is what they market as image stabilization. Not really honest, if you ask me.

Competition includes the Nikon Coolpix S200, Sony's T100, and one of the random powershot cameras (possibly the SD1000 or SD750).

FUJIFILM TAKES ON GENERATION 'Z' The New 7.2 MP FinePix Z10fd Style-Cam Features Cutting Edge Technology that Flirts with Today's Youth

Valhalla, N.Y., July 26, 2007 - Responding to popular demand to be 'hooked up' at all times, FUJIFILM U.S.A. Inc. today unveiled a brand new digital camera designed specifically for today's fashion-conscious digital natives. Combining cutting edge technology with style and sophistication, the FinePix Z10fd provides tech-savvy Gen 'Z' users with an eye-catching digital camera that makes it easy to take great pictures and share them with the press of a button.

The 7.2 MegaPixel FinePix Z10fd features an ultra-portable design, making it easy to take this sexy micro-mini camera anywhere you go and it comes in five brilliant colors to match the latest styles of today's fashionistas - Wave Blue, Wasabi Green, Hot Pink, Sunset Orange, and Midnight Black. It also sports a Fujinon 3x optical Zoom lens, 2.5" LCD screen and packs 54MB of internal memory to give you some extra room when your memory card has had its fill. With its stunning high-resolution LCD, the FinePix Z10fd also has a cool new slideshow mode from Fujifilm that let's you view and share your photos spontaneously with friends with music provided to help set the mood.

Face_it, Beam_it, Blog_it
With endless possibilities the FinePix Z10fd makes it easy and fun to stay connected with friends and family and share all life's moments through technology

Face_it.
Capturing the ultimate party pictures will never be an issue with the FinePix Z10fd, as it features Fujifilm's innovative Face Detection Technology. A one-touch selectable mode that identifies up to 10 human faces in a scene, Face Detection Technology sets the correct focus for a chosen primary face and exposure for all detected faces automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. It can cope with back-lit scenes such as concerts and it also comes in handy for capturing the perfect self portrait. The Z10 also includes a new Automatic Red Eye Removal feature, that works in conjunction with Face Detection. Red eye is a common complaint given by 60% of digital camera users. Z10 instantly checks each detected face for red eye, and if it's found, corrects it automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded.

Beam_it.
The FinePix Z10fd comes equipped with Fujifilm's innovative IrSimpleTM technology for fast, easy wireless image transfer to any IrSimpleTM equipped device. With the FinePix Z10fd you can capture the moment, point to a similar device and share the image instantly with friends - so instead of making an innocent r take the group photo with five different cameras, they'll only have to take it once and IrSimpleTM handles the rest.

Blog_it.
Also making life easier for the bloggers of the world, the FinePix Z10fd comes equipped with Fujifilm's handy Blog Mode that lets you post pictures to blogs, websites, auctions, or e-mail with ease by copying and automatically resizing any image you've captured to a properly sized 640x480 (VGA) (or 320 x 240) image size, right in the camera, saving time from downloading it and adjusting it on your PC.

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix Z10fd is hooked up with the following fantastic features:
Picture Stabilization: Picture Stabilization utilizes higher sensitivities, up to ISO 1600 in the Z10fd, (with an incredibly high signal to noise ratio for clean images), and faster shutter and operational speeds to help reduce camera shake, freeze subject movement and improve low light background detail.
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene, and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the Z10fd to enable the camera to use less flash, preventing that "blasted with light" effect that so many digital camera flashes leave you with. The result is pleasing, natural tones with no flash "wash-out".
Dual Shot Mode: In this mode, the FinePix Z10fd quickly shoots two images in succession — one with and one without the flash — saving both. This convenient function lets the user perform an on-the-spot picture comparison and decide whether the FinePix Z10fd produced the most pleasing photo with flash, or without.
Special Scene Modes: The FinePix Z10fd has 14 scene positions including Fireworks, Beach and Snow, offering a one-touch setting for almost any situation.
xD / SD / SDHC Compatible slot: A new single media slot accepts both xD Picture Card and SD/SDHC media cards. One slot - two media options.
Battery Life: Long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 200 shots).

"Fujifilm recognized that today's younger generation wants to be connected with their friends at all times and that there wasn't a digital camera manufacturer that really addressed this." said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "We decided to create a camera that would mesh our latest technological advancements with today's popular trends and styles, and came up with the Z10fd."

Further information on the FinePix Z10fd will be available at HYPERLINK "http://www.offZhook.com" www.offZhook.com, the official website created especially to celebrate the 'Z-Lifestyle,' when it goes live on August 1st. Along with a myriad of fun downloads and interactive displays, aspiring photographers between the ages of 18 and 24 will have the chance to submit original photos in a competition that will award 4 lucky winners with a VIP trip to New York to attend the Z10fd launch party in October.

The FinePix Z10fd will debut in late September at a retail price of $199.95.

Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd has 8MP, 18x Zoom and 6400 ISO (Kinda) I've never wanted a Fujifilm camera quite so badly as this S8000fd, the successor to the S6500fd, one of the original face recognition cams. First off, its been bumped from 6 to 8MP, still lower than the competition, but for the sake of better light sensitivity. Running in 4MP mode, more than enough for most shots, it can capture an astounding 6400 ISO (at full res it hits 1600). Then there's the gorgeous 18x zoom, which is the equivalent of a 27mm to 486mm lens.

Of course, to shoot at nearly 500mm, you'll find the dual image stabilization handy, which utilizes mechanical sensor shift, and image processing. Face recognition works to focus and expose up to 10 faces, as always, but now it does red eye reduction, on the fly. There's a 2.5 inch LCD or an LCD-viewfinder, which refreshes at 60fps. The camera itself can shoot at 15FPS at 2MP, so its questionable whether or not it'll be even half that fast at decent res. As far as video modes go, this one shoots at 640 x 480 at 30FPS.

What seals the deal is that this camera drops monogamous relations with the shitty xD format cards, picking up SD and SD-HC compatibility, too. The whole rig operates on 4 AA batteries. Due in September at $400.

FUJIFILM FINEPIX S8000fd GETS CLOSE UP WITH INDUSTRY LEADING 18X OPTICAL ZOOM WITH FACE DETECTION

Features Advanced SLR Functionality at a Consumer Price-tag

Valhalla, NY, July 26, 2007 - Fujifilm is bringing the wide-angle, long zoom technology to the consumer market with today's introduction of the FinePix S8000fd. The 8-MegaPixel, SLR-styled camera features on M of the largest optical zooms on a fixed-lens camera in the industry, and introduces Fujifilm's latest 'Dual Image Stabilization,' plus ISO settings of up to ISO6400 (at 50% resolution) - all features you would expect in a high-end digital camera, but at a price point consumers can afford.

Flexibility & Control
The S8000fd comes equipped with Fujinon's 18x Wide Angle Optical Zoom lens, offering unprecedented flexibility in a compact SLR body style camera. With a 27mm-486mm equivalent, it's all the lens you need in one device. The fixed lens eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, and it's a sealed system, which prevents dust contamination - the #1 D-SLR repair complaint.

The S8000fd also features a full-resolution ISO equivalency of ISO 1600, a rarity in consumer-level digicams. The S8000fd can achieve ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 at 50% resolution, settings that are rare at the consumer level. Such high light sensitivities allow for faster shutter speeds, which reduce blurring caused by both camera shake and subject movement.

Dual Image Stabilization
To offer the best of both worlds where image stabilization is concerned, the S8000fd uses 'Dual Image Stabilization'; a brand new combination of mechanical sensor shift stabilization with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology which utilizes a combination of higher ISO levels and faster shutter speeds. This 'Dual Image Stabilization' steadies the photographer's hand, and protects against camera shake and subject movement for total anti-blur protection. As a result, an increase in clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions or when shooting moving subjects.

Face Detection Technology
The S8000fd features Fujifilm's Face Detection technology, identifying up to 10 faces in a framed scene. Once faces are identified and prioritized, the S8000fd adjusts its focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. Face Detection technology on the S8000fd also includes a new Automatic Red Eye Removal feature. Red eye is a common complaint given by 60% of digital camera users. In this mode, the camera instantly checks each detected fact for red eye, and if it's found, corrects it automatically, saving the time consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded.

Other helpful features found on the FinePix S8000fd for top-quality picture-taking include:
i-Flash Intelligent Flash: i-Flash (Intelligent Flash) detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix S8000fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a "washed-out" effect.
Movie Mode: Capture VGA quality action clips in 640x480 resolution at 30 fps with sound. Great for when you're out and you don't have your video camera on-hand.
Scene modes: A wide range of more than a dozen pre-programmed scene modes provides top-quality photos in a range of shooting conditions.
High-Speed Continuous Shooting Modes: Action comes at you fast. With four speed options, the S8000fd has the ability to capture up to 15 frames per second (at 2 MP resolution) and never misses the shot.
High Resolution LCD: The 2.5" LCD display offers 230k pixels of resolution with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): Rather than framing your shots with the 2.5" high resolution LCD, the S8000fd offers an electronic viewfinder to eye up the best shot with an astonishing 60 fps refresh rate for smooth viewing.
xD / SD / SD-HC Compatible slot: A new single media slot accepts not only Fujifilm's traditional xD-Picture Cards but also Secure Digital (SD) and SD-High Capacity (SD-HC) cards too.
Operates on 4xAA Batteries: The ultimate in convenience and accessibility, using AA batteries means in a pinch, more batteries are just moments away.

"With the FinePix S8000fd, Fujifilm is bringing its heritage in photography and industry leading technology to its customers by offering them incredible optical zoom and ISO levels in a camera priced at a level they can afford," said David Troy, Senior Product Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc. "By styling advanced DSLR features in a compact, easy to use digicam, we're offering users the tools to capture photos you would swear were captured by a pro."

The FinePix S8000fd will debut in September 2007 at a retail price of $399.95.

Fujifilm FinePix F480 Cheapie and the Even Cheaper A920 Fuji has two new entry-level digicams coming down the line. First is the Finepix A920, sporting a 9-mp CCD, 4x zoom and a 2.7-inch screen all for $199.95. But if you need your camera to be a little more on the trim side than you'll want to take a look at the F480. This guy has similar specs to the A920 aside from a slightly smaller 8-mp sensor and is .4-inches thinner, but is also a bit cheaper at $179.95. Looks like the Canon PowerShot A450 and the Canon Coolpix L12 have some new competition.

Fujifilm IS Pro Digital SLR Camera Has Predator Vision Forget the visible light spectrum, any camera can hack that. The Fujifilm IS Pro is the most recent camera in Fujifilm's pro lineup that can shoot in the ultraviolet and infrared spectrums as well. Tooled for professional snoops, it also has such gumshoey features as one-touch black-and-white Live Image Preview, post capture face-detection that identifies up to 10 faces per image and Mirror Lock-Up and Shutter Delay to reduce image blur in a long exposure. It's simply the choicest thing to accompany your coffee thermos and box of doughnuts on those long overnight stakeouts. Jump for the details, right from the horse's mouth.

FUJIFILM LAUNCHES LATEST IN LINE OF INFRARED DIGITAL CAMERAS

Fujifilm IS Pro Makes it Easier for Law Enforcement Agencies to Enter Into UV and IR Investigative Photography

Valhalla, NY, July 13, 2007 - Following up on the success of the FinePix S3 Pro UVIR and IS-1 infrared digital cameras, Fujifilm today announced the IS Pro, the latest in a line that has proved popular with technical, law enforcement, medical research and scientific communities.

The IS Pro utilizes Fujifilm's Super CCD Pro and Real Photo Processor Pro technology to see light from the ultraviolet (UV), visible and infrared (IR) portion of the spectrum (approx. 380nm - 1000nm). It also benefits from compatibility with Nikon F mount lenses and Nikon iTTL flash systems, making it a cost effective solution for law enforcement agencies that already have Nikon components.

In addition, and to accommodate the growing needs of its specialized customers, Fujifilm has produced several system packages for the IS Pro digital SLR. These system packages range from the basic camera kit to advanced full system kits, along with a new set of UV and IR filters.

Dark opaque filters that cover the lens often render the viewfinder useless, so the IS Pro carries specialized features useful for investigative photography, such as a special quick activate one touch Live Image Preview (black and white) mode that can be activated by pressing the "Display/Back" button for three seconds. This makes fast access to Live Preview mode much easier when used on forensic copy stand tables in dark room environments. Its Mirror Lock-Up and Shutter Delay features also aid in reducing image blur during long exposures. It also has a specially formulated protective CCD glass filter that was designed to help protect the Super CCD Pro from dust and general maintenance damage while maximizing its UV and IR gathering potential.

"We're very excited to be offering this highly-anticipated camera to customers here in the U.S.," said Darin Pepple, consumer and professional marketing manager with Fujifilm's Electronic Imaging Division. "With our different kits, at different price levels, we are making it easier for law enforcement agencies to achieve a quick, cost-effective solution for entering into UV and IR investigative photography."

Live Image CCD Preview
Fujifilm pioneered Live Image CCD Preview for DSLRs. The IS Pro provides a 30-second Live Image CCD preview to the camera's LCD monitor directly from the imaging sensor in color or black and white. To further improve the process, the Live Image Preview can be digitally magnified and brightness adjusted to improve focusing accuracy or to compensate for light intensity. The video image can also be viewed on an NTSC/PAL monitor, or on the PC over the camera's USB 2.0 connection directly from Fujifilm's optional HyperUtility HS-V3 software.

Fujifilm's Post Capture Face Detection
The camera can be used for conventional daylight photography by adding a UVIR cut filter to the lens. And with Fujifilm's Post Capture Face Detection, after capture faces are automatically zoomed in during playback to confirm focus and exposure of up to 10 faces per image. Skin color quality is dependent on the brand of UVIR cut filter used.

Fujifilm IS Pro Digital SLR Kits
The four kits available in the U.S. come with a free online introduction to Fujifilm Forensic Infrared Photography from BioMed Studios, with additional courses available for a fee.

1. $2599.95 Body Only - Camera Body; Battery; Charger

2. $2699.95 Basic System Kit - Camera Body; Battery; Charger; AC Adapter; HyperUtility HS-V3 Software; CCD Dust Blower

3. $3799 Forensic Filter System Kit - Camera Body; AC Adapter; Battery Charger; AC Adapter; HyperUtility HS-V3 Software; CCD Dust Blower; Peca Products 67mm Filter Kit with 7 IR, 1 UVIR (18a), 1 UVIR Blocking, three step rings: 55-58, 58-67, 62-67; 15' Combo USB/Firewire Cable (S3/S5 Compatible); Rubber Camera Body Armor by Made Products

4. $4999 Forensic System Kit with Zeiss Lens - Camera Body; AC Adapter; Battery Charger; Zeiss 50mm Macro 1:2 F2.0 Lens with IR focusing offset marking (Not suitable for UV photography. UV requires a quartz UV lens for optimal UV performance); HyperUtility Software HS-V3 Software; CCD Dust Blower; Peca Products 67mm Filter Kit with 7 IR, 1 UVIR (18a), 1 UVIR Blocking, three step rings; 55-58, 58-67, 62-67; 15' Combo USB/ Firewire Cable (S3/S5 Compatible); Rubber Camera Body Armor by Made Products

UV and IR Filters
Two of the kits listed above contain a collection of forensic UV and IR filters from Peca Products, Inc. They are the most common, yet hard to find set of filters that most forensic specialists use during investigations.

"Dealers are often asked to suggest filters for use with our cameras" said Darin Pepple. "Now that guesswork is gone, and purchasing a forensic camera system has been simplified."

For more information on Peca Products filters, please visit http://www.ir-uv.com/IR-UV%20Filters.htm

Improving Workflow
An optional IS Pro firmware upgrade due out later this Autumn will support in camera TIFF file formats in three resolutions. In addition, Fujifilm USA will offer an optional Bar Code Scanner option that allows for alpha-numeric data read by the bar code reader directly into the IS Pro's image file as part of the EXIF header in JPEG, TIFF and RAW file formats. This data can later be recalled so that images are synched to databases using special software programs.

Bar codes of driver's licenses, employee IDs, automotive VIN tags, credit cards, evidence tags, or any object with a bar code can be recorded directly to the camera. The same can also be accomplished with a magnetic card reader. Fujifilm provides an optional kit ($479.95) that includes a fully programmed and ready to use Symbol/Motorola LS2208 bar code reader with RS232 Kit and AC Adapter, Nikon MC-35 GPS/Serial Camera Adapter, Kingston 2GB Compact Flash Card, Scan to Reprogram Setup Card, and Tenba carrying case.

Fujifilm's optional Hyper Utility Software HS-V3 version 1.1 enables tethered shooting direct to a MAC or PC, with control from the camera or computer via a USB 2.0 connection. This option significantly speeds image capture and quality verification. Its Split Screen Mode allows photographers to fine tune the focus through a series of quick succession shots. This feature is highly useful during very low light UV photography where Live Image Preview becomes difficult. In addition, Live Image Preview from the computer is possible via its USB connection. Using the PC Capture mode can reduce or limit the photographer's exposure to harmful UV light by placing distance between the photographer and the object being photographed. Advanced RAW file conversion to JPEG, TIFF 8 bit and TIFF 16 bit is also provided by the HyperUtility HS-V3 software.

Fujifilm's S700 Packs 10x Zooming Muscle and "Smart" Flash Fujifilm must have given their new S700 a dose of roids cause unlike most cameras which pack a measly 3x optical zoom, the S700 muscles past them with a whopping 10x zoom. It also has a unique flash system dubbed iFlash, which adjusts the strength of the flash according to your lighting environment, so people in your shots don't end up looking like ghosts. Other features worth noting are built-in image stabilization (for quaky-handed shutterbugs like myself) and an ISO sensitivity range of up to 1600. And let's not forget this 7MP shooter is both xD/SD friendly. For $249, you got me sold.

The Cameras of CES Wedged between the biannual Photokina show last September and the annual PMA show this coming February, CES is not the best place to find new camera announcements. Absent from the action are heavyweights Canon, Nikon, and Pentax—and even some middleweights like Panasonic. But some of the scrappier little vendors made a few waves to fill the radio silence. Here are four worth watching:

V7-front.JPGCasio introduced the first slim camera with a 7X optical zoom tucked inside the camera. At an inch thick, it's plumper than many other slims when turned off. But with the internal zoom, it doesn't get the big-boner effect of most rivals when they get turned on. This is also Casio's first camera to use a CCD that moves to counteract camera shake. (It's playing catch-up the pioneer of image stabilization, Panasonic, plus Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Olympus.)

More after the jump...

f40.JPGFujifilm took an awesome camera, the F31fd, and made it way better by squeezing it down from 27.8 millimeters to just 23mm (.9 inches) thick. And it squeezed in room for a slot that can take cheap, ubiquitous SD memory cards (along with Fujifilm's old standby: overpriced, underappreciated xD picture cards.)

V610s.JPGKodak brought haut couture to the lowly poor with the swell-looking V803 camera. Priced at reasonable $200, it provides higher-end features including 8-megapixel resolution, and ISO 800 light sensitivity. But its real beauty is skin-deep: a choice of ten exterior colors. The gold, green, red, and (believe it or not) white finishes are especially sweet-looking. But we don't' yet know what the photos will look like.

L73.JPGSamsung's L73 is clad in Sammy's new deep-gray, stainless-steel finish. It isn't ultra-skinny, but has a sexy, curvy, voluptuous figure that we wouldn't kick out of bed. And its Samsungs first camera with has face-detection technology. It also has Samsung's pretty-new touch technology, that lets you breeze through complex menus by pressing or sliding your finger over buttons that run along the right and bottom sides of the screen.

First Grope: Fufifilm F40fd Fujifilm announced the F40fd (at left) a few days before CES, and we got our first chance today to fondle it. The biggest improvement from its predecessor is the slimmer figure. We loved the old FinePix F31fd (right) that boasts a stratospheric ISO 3200 sensitivity (and actually looked good up to at least up to ISO 800). It also produces crisp detail and gorgeous colors. Not so loveable, though, is its doughy physique measuring 1.1 inches thick—which made it hard to slip into a pocket.

The F40fd slims down to a lithe .9 inches and ups the resolution from 6.3 to 8.3 megapixels. Like the F31fd, it includes Fujifilm's face-detection technology, which can recognize up to 10 mugs and adjust focus and light metering so they come out clearly in the picture. (At least it worked with cardboard cutouts of faces in a demo.) And it's one of Fujifilm's first new cameras that accept SD memory cards (in addition to the white elephant xD type that Fujifilm has so stubbornly stuck by).

fujifaces.JPGUsing its face-detection foo, the F40fd can automatically produce cropped previews and copies of photos to create portraits of each individual in a group shot. And if you print directly from the camera (sans PC) it will kick out as many copies of a picture as there are faces in it. The camera can play slideshows from the memory card, and it automatically rotates photos taken in portrait mode so nothing ends up going sideways across the screen. Fujifilm did drop the maximum ISO from 3200 to 2000. But since 3200 was useless on the F30 anyway, it's not much of a loss.ind-face.JPGThe F40fd goes on sale in March for $300.

This one is a keeper.

Fujifilm Accepts SD Card, Gravity, Round Earth Fujifilm makes some great cameras. Their low-light performance and color vibrancy can be stunning. But every review I write has to have the caveat "requires dorky, expensive xD memory cards."

No more! Fujifilm and SD are now good buds. The new high-end F40fd (March 2007, $300) and entry-level A610 ($130) and A800 ($180) feature 2-in-1 slots that accept SD or xD cards (like anyone is still going to use an xD card now). And all of their new cameras from now on will feature the SD-friendly slots.

Thank you, thank you, Fujifilm. Now, can you have a little talk with Olympus about their xD addiction and with Sony about this MemoryStick silliness.

Fujifilm Finepix A610 and A800 Low-end Digicams Designed for beginners and cheapskates, the A800 and A610 have 8- and 6-megapixel sensors and come at a price of $179 and $129, respectively. They both have 3x optical zoom, but the A800 has an ISO range of 100-800, whereas the A610 only has 100-400. Both have a 2.5-inch LCD display and support SD and xD memory cards.

Pretty low-end stuff here that we wouldn't recommend buying unless it was a gift to someone you didn't like all that much. Retails in March.

(That's what the fd in its name stands for.) The F40fd picks out up to 10 faces in the frame at once and does some fancy voodoo to optimize your shot.

The 3x optical zoom and 2.5-inch LCD makes this $299 shooter a nice choice for beginners and vacationers.

Fujifilm Z5fd Looks Out For Bloggers We've had our eye on these two for quite some time now, and today Fujifilm finally made them official. First up is the Z5fd, a slim point and shoot that attempts to be every bloggers best friend with a special "Blog Mode" feature that automatically reduces the size of images for easy posting to your blog. (If only it could write its own posts). The 6.3-megapixel camera will also have a built-in 3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD. It'll go for $229. Big spenders can make the jump up to the $1,999 S5 Pro. This monster will have...

fujifilm-finepix-s5-pro.jpg "double pixel technology," which will double the resolution from 6MP to 12MP. We'll have to see how that works before making any conclusions. Otherwise the cam will have an ISO sensitivity of up to 3200 and Fujifilm's RP Processor Pro which will allow for smoother tonality. $1,199 is a helluva lot to splurge on an SLR with 6MP so we're prone to go with the blog-friendly Z5fd. But the SLR will make its debut first in February while the point-and-shoot will follow up a month later.

FujiFilm FinePix F31fd Takes Better Pictures of Your Ugly Mug FinePix_F31fd_1_jpg%20copy.jpgThis is FujiFilm's latest camera, the FinePix F31fd. It has the usual bag'o'tricks including 3x optical zoom, 6.3-megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD screen, etc. The one unique feature it does include is a "Face Detection System." The FDS will recognize when a face is in frame and automatically bring it into focus along with adjusting the brightness and flash accordingly. Sorry, ugly people, your days are numbered.

Why the Fujifilm S5 Pro DSLR Camera is only 6 Megapixels fujifilm-finepix-s5-probb.jpgIn the shadow of 10 Megapixel DSLRs like the Nikon D80 and Canon Rebel XTi, and even a bunch of 10 megapixel point and shoot cameras, you might wonder why the S5 Pro Fujifilm camera, due out in 2007 is only rated to 6 Megapixels. DP Review explains that Fujifilm decided to bow out of the pixel pissing match, focusing sensor development away from pixel density and towards greater picture quality. Pussies? Maybe not.

The S5 Pro uses Fujifilm's new Super CCD SR Pro. It uses about 12 million sensors, but splits them in duty: "6.17 million larger 'S' photodiodes capture main image information, while 6.17 million smaller 'R' photodiodes for bright area information."

Actually, it seems brilliant. Use a different set of sensors with a different sensitivity to capture areas usually blown out while you're capturing shadow detail. I almost never shoot at full res, anyhow. I'm not shooting for some glossy magazine, just you monkeys on the interweb, so it doesn't matter to me. You?

Fujifilm FinePix A700: High Rez, Small Package

Fujifilm rolled out its FinePix A700 digital camera today, and between its 2.4-inch LCD viewscreen and 3x optical zoom lies Fujifilm's Super CCD, turning 7.3 megapixels into something that can resolve quite a bit more. It brings that high-rez into a tiny form factor that's just 3.7 inches wide and just over an inch thick, just right for even a small pocket.

The company brags about the camera's low noise performance across its ISO 100 to 400 range of sensitivity, but the jaw dropper here is the price, $199. Fujifilm says the Finepix A700 will be available in early October.

New Fujfilm S6000fd Camera Spots Faces fujifilm-s6500fd.jpgIf you like your family and want them to come out looking as sharp as possible in you next set of holiday snapshots, Fuji has some help: their new FinePix S6000fd comes with Face Detection, where the camera scans the image, detects the faces and focuses in on them instead of some inanimate object in the background. It can also do clever stuff like pick the faces out of a photo and create a head-and-shoulders slideshow.

It also optimizes the exposure for accurate skin tones, but Fuji doesn't clarify what happens if you visit a nudist beach. I suspect that the camera might explode.
