Top Gear Races Nissan GT-R Vs. Bullet Train In Japan

The Top Gear crew is in Japan for this week's episode and they've got another heated race for us: A Nissan GT-R R35, a gadget car by dynamic handling and Playstation inspired dashboard vs. a bullet train, running both from Japan's northern Hakui-Shi coast to Tokyo. With no surprise ol' Clarkson is driving the fiery beast while Hammond and May are left traveling Japanese public transportation. I'm not gonna spoil the race for ya though, but Jalopnik has the results for you. [Jalopnik]

Gear4 BlackBox Micro is Micro Black Box Speaker For MP3 Gear

Last time we talked about Blackbox gizmos from Gear4 it was a largeish Bluetooth speaker, but this new one is different. It's wired, USB-powered and designed to be a portable companion for an MP3 player. You may think size sacrifices bass power, but apparently it's got an "SFX gel" base, meaning it uses any flat surface you stick it to to amplify sound volume and bass. It's got a normal driver too, takes line-in, and can be powered with a power-brick. Gear4's site doesn't reveal exactly how small it is, but it's out August in the UK for $40. Metal Gear Solid 4 Watch Says It's Time For Snaaaaaaake!

Not only are we gigantic fans of the Metal Gear Solid series as a whole (we're guts deep in the latest saga right now), we're also big fans of being able to tell time. That's why this limited edition MGS4 watch, given to preorder sales at UK's Gamestation, is so damn fantastic. There are only 500 of these Hideo Kojima-endorsed watches in the entire country, which makes us sad. Preorder yours now if you're a Brit and you like the action stylings of Solid, Liquid, Naked, Solidus and Old Snake. [Gamestation via Kotaku]

Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed (Sounds Like Crap)

No wonder Solid Snake is so grouchy in Metal Gear Solid 4. Sure, the MGS4 Bluetooth headset looks like the most badass one ever, but the sound quality is apparently horrible—like you've been kidnapped and gagged with Liquid Ocelot's underwear. How are you supposed to banter with Roy Campbell while ducking exclamation points if he can't understand you? I think this officially ruins our Friday. =( [Gadget Madness via PS3Fanboy via Kotaku]

5 Reasons to Check Out the CIA Spycraft Book

Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA's Spytechs from Communism to Al-Qaeda goes on sale in stores today. I know you think I probably milked it for all it's worth, but there's actually a ton of mind-boggling spy gear in there that I didn't have a chance to cover on Giz, such as: More »

First Live Shots of Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset

We've been dreaming of using the Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset for secret pantsing missions every since we laid eyes on it. Other than these new shots that will probably self-destruct soon, no new details we didn't already know: Bluetooth 2.0, eight-hour talk time, 160 standby, drops on June 12 with the game itself. Peek another shot below, or head to IGN for a few more. More »

Razer vs. SteelSeries PC Gaming Gear Battlemodo: Which One Made Me a Better Gamer?

Not to be a prick, but I'm a better gamer than probably 80 percent of you. At any given first-person shooter, I will probably kill you more than you kill me, and by a decent margin. The point is, I'm good—but I'm no pro. I've actually always been skeptical about "pro" gaming gear, and the sliver of an edge you might gain by paying a lot more. I put complete setups from both SteelSeries and Razer—using my beloved, well-worn five-year-old Logitech gear as a control—through a rigorous multi-day Battlemodo to definitively answer a single, fundamental question: Will pro gaming gear make me a better gamer? Crazy Weird Survival Gear That Just Might Save Your Ass

If you live in harsh climates or areas prone to nature's wrath, sometimes having the right gear can be the difference between life and death. Fortunately, there are plenty of companies and designers out there vying to be the one to save your ass when the big one hits—but some of the stuff they come up with is downright bizarre. Wired has put together a gallery of these items—some of which we have seen already (like the Cocoon "nutsack" tent and the Bedu rapid response kit), while others (like those illustrated in the gallery below) are completely new. For the full list, hit the following link. [Wired]

Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset Takes Crown For Best Headset Ever

This is, without a doubt, the absolute best Bluetooth headset ever made by human hands. We have no idea whether the battery life is acceptable, whether the noise reduction is adequate, or whether it even fits well over our ear. What we do know is that it's a Metal Gear Solid 4 headset, which means it belongs to Snake. SNAKE! This alone makes it worth our $59.99. Look for a simultaneous release on June 12 with the MGS4 game on PS3. Again: best headset ever. [Kotaku]

Badass Steel Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 Is US Bound (!)

Originally thought to be another one of those obscene Japan-only gamer perks, the limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 gun-metal grey PS3 is going to be infiltrating the US after all. But it might easier to procure an actual Metal Gear than one of these babies—the official Playstation blog warns that the package is going to be a "VERY, VERY Limited Edition bundle!" Buckle-less Belt Goes Against All T's Principles

Yeah, me again. I got into the Gizmodo office using a trebuchet Hannibal and I constructed from a drainpipe, a coupla ball bearings, some old tyre rubber that I ripped with my bare hands and a buckle-less belt. Now this ain't no infomercial brought to you on the QVCQVT shopping channel, but I am Mr T and I approve this message. When I first heard about the Buckle-less belt, I thought, "What the hell is a buckle-less belt? Is it like a zipless fuck? More »

Shooting Flying Cars with Machine Guns, Rocket Launchers

I'm on the beach on semi-vacation now, here in the south of Spain, and we have BBC One via satellite. This means one thing on Sunday nights: Top Gear. Chances are that you probably have watched Top Gear clips on YouTube, like the one above, in which Jeremy Clarkson replaces clay pigeons and shotguns with real flying cars, machine guns and, at the end of it, a gas-tank-seeking (no kidding) rocket launcher. Bonsai Gear Clock: Decorate Your Desk With Naked Cogs

The cutest design feature of the Bonsai Gear Clock is its naked gear wheels, rather than its kinda, maybe similarity in shape to a bonsai tree. With plastic gears and a wooden base, it's surely lower maintenance than a real bonsai tree, and watching those gears go slowly round is possibly more interesting than watching tiny leaves sprout. At least in the short term, because a tree really grows and all this is going to do is spin. Still, if you're into strange clocks as desk decoration it's available for $100. Gear4's BassStation iPod Dock Thumps Out 35W of Pumping Tunes

Gear4's BassStation iPod dock will have a 35W pumping subwoofer, RCA connectivity and a fully featured remote control. The white on black styling looks retro enough for us to give the 2.1 stereo speaker the time of day, and the 10m range of the control gives us enough space to shield our eyes when it all gets too much. Whether it will be the worth the £99.99 ($201), is another matter entirely. Alternatively, you could opt for the undisputed, iPod Dock King. [Techdigest]

Bike Cuffs Bring Security, Kinkiness, to Your Cycle

Made of hardened, laminated steel, and based on the design for police-issue manacles, the bike cuff is all kinds of wonderful. You can lock up to three bikes at the same time, and the ring is big enough to secure to signposts to deter would-be tea-leaves. The heat-treated lock is pick-proof and there's a hardened pivot link, which means no busting your bike using leverage. There is, however, one downside to the cuffs: price. Expect to pay $158.50 for them. [Firebox]

blu-ray

Blu-ray Cannot Contain Metal Gear Solid 4's Awesomeness

The one technical advantage Blu-ray held over HD DVD is that Blu-ray discs hold more stuff, 50GB on a dual-layer disc. But that's still not enough for Metal Gear Solid 4 in all its glory, according to creator Hideo Kojima:
Kojima: For us, we're not still not satisfied with the quality we can do. You know, there's not capacity space.

80GB PlayStation 3 Not Exactly Discontinued, Just Bundled With Metal Gear Solid 4

The fact that stores everywhere, including Sony's own SonyStyle, were dropping the 80GB seemed to point to a conclusion that the 80GB was on its way out. Not exactly. As we found out today, the 80GB version is going to be back on June 12, but it's going to be packed with a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 and a DualShock 3 controller. All this for the same price of $499. Yes ma'am. [Kotaku]
