    Yeah, diamonds are actually quite plentiful, and the resale market being worth zip is correct.

    The only reason people pay so much for diamonds is because of DeBeers... if you want a case study on a global monopoly, there you go.

    @Worf:
    It's not the diamonds that they have a global monopoly on. It's the people who are qualified to shape them. Or at least that's the way I hear it. Having a diamond mine is damn near worthless in terms of the jewelry market if you can't get it cut right.

    Sweet! Now we can get a photo of grandma on the diamond we had made from her ashes!

    Actually...I was thinking that it actually made a certain amount of sense for that. That way you can keep track of who got turned into which diamond.

    If you want to ruin the resale value on a diamond, just try to sell it. It is so sad to find out what a ring is really worth.

    @wkm001: And even more sad is what people will BUY that ring for after you sell it so cheap, and a store marks it "vintage".

    I personally am waiting for them to perfect the 2+ carat synthetic diamond. The future Mrs. GitEmSteveDave has a ~2 carat marquise in a Ti setting in exchange for agreeing to put up with my stupid ass.

    @Porntipsguzzardo_GitEmSteveDav...:

    is it me or is this the second time ive seen you displaying your diamond ring thing? either you have the ring and no one cares...or you dont have the ring and no one cares. (or you have the ring after she threw it back in your face....thats why you keep bringing it up).

    anyway it is a nice design...i admit

    @shalegac: I paid ~$65 for my Abyss replica. I think these are more expensive as they are tension rings and that takes a little more work.

    @henhen: Yeah, 2nd time I probably have brought it up. Great company either way. No, I don't have the ring and also currently no one cares about me as well. I fell in love with the design though, and really do hope they get the 2+ carat man made diamonds perfected. Last I checked 2 was the limit, and I don't think they were shaped to make a marquise.

    A company in Canada has been laser etching serial numbers into diamonds for years (along with an image of a polar bear). Yep.

    @peter_kelowna: MANY companies etch serial numbers into diamonds. The ones with the polar bear are probably from a specific mine. Candia diamonds have a maple leaf.

    They say the only way you can see the etching it is with their viewer (invisible to the naked eye) and that they can remove it without hurting the diamond. I call shenanigans.

    By the time you're ready to throw this on the resale market synthetic diamonds will push the price almost all stones to near zero anyway.

    I'm just waiting for the day I can get my ugly mug etched on a 10 pounder.

    @LazyPanda: I don't know about those synthetic diamonds. People pay a premium to get "certified" natural diamonds. Sure, those certificates are written with the blood of child laborers, but it's a small price.
