Does anyone else other than me want to see this on a pogo stick?

so basically you need to drive very fast with these shock absorbers?

but what about the damage to the rest of the car?

just curious and too lazy to poll my friend google, but has anyone created something to harvest wind energy in a car?

@Anonymoose: Nope, such a thing would create drag, which would reduce efficiency of the vehicle, which would... Plus really all you need is a bird strike on the damn prop located on the roof of your car and you'd end up in the river.

@Anonymoose: That would work only when decelerating, and that could be better done with a modified braking system.

@Lite: is combing the desert.: but you take in so much wind through your exhaust anyway, i figured you could add something like that, a la an intake.

@Lite: is combing the desert.: I don't buy that, cars already have drag. Plus nobody said it has to be on the roof. A couple small props down in the grille area (in lieu of foglights, for example) would serve to supply a small amount of power... probably equal or greater to the amount these shocks do.

@G-Ram: Which then just makes the car THAT much more expensive to repair when you rear-end someone. Thus your insurance costs will go up, eating away at actual money savings. Which is pretty much what counts unless you can afford to be eco-friendly by paying more money.

@G-Ram: The grill is there to let air into the engine compartment. If you put fans there, you reduce the airflow and will need bigger grills, further increasing drag.

@Hello Mister Walrus: If you think about it, there are already one or two big fans *behind* the grille. Many of them are run by electric motors instead of belts. It would be a simple matter to harvest electricity from them when they aren't needed for cooling (like the winter time.)

@FredicvsMaximvs: Actually, you're on to something. The cooling fans only need to run when the car is parked/going to slow to cool the engine. At higher speeds it could be used to generate electricity.

So what happens if this thing shorts out and starts delivering electric shocks to the driver every time a bump is hit?
