He was one of the biggest contributors to modern music in the 20th century.
Les Paul, we salute you for giving us the music we truly enjoy today. Without you there are no Foo Fighters, Van Halen, Chicago, or rock n roll for that matter.
@Super Moose: You're an asshole. Les Paul DID invent today's version of the electric guitar. the Les Paul guitar, is not JUST named after him, he invented THAT guitar. He also invented multi-track recording, and the technique of adding another head to a tape recorder, inventing what we today call tape delay. Les Paul was also a musician. Who are you to downplay the death of a person without whom modern rock as we know it today simply would not exist. Save your nitpicking for another post.
This man is a genius. The Musicians of the world owe so much to him. I was in the recording studio with my band a few weeks ago and marveling at how much of the modern equipment was invented by this man. Pure brilliance.
What isn't much talked about these days is that he was a really good musician, too. Sad, but he had a full life and experienced fame he richly deserved.
One of my favorite commercials is that Coor's one where that dude is playing a guitar, old man asks if he can play it, kid hands it over, old man is awesome, kid asks his name, he says "its on your guitar".
