4 AA batteries? is this 1996? wtf?
rechargeable lithium polymer batteries are getting less expensive all the time, and can be molded into any shape, where as cylindrical batteries require a lot of internal 'dead space'.
great idea, shitty execution.

A friend of mine is a beta tester for this technology and has shot some really incredible stuff.

the gripe isn't the technology, it's the half assed power supply issue and the wonky proprietary software, both of which were outed appropriately for their sub par-ness.

- The stitcher software can export directly to a TIFF/RAW. Simply go to file -> 'export stitched image to' menu.
- It doesn't do any exposure blending, so you either need to lock down the exposure, or use some software that does blending (like autostitch...however you wouldn't be able to use the gigapan.org flash viewer then). New gigapan software was released yesterday that adds some options for better stitching also.
-Batteries. I'm using Eneloop's, and I've taken about 500 shots, and not even at half battery life, maybe this one was defective?
- For people walking in the shot, you can hit a button on the gigapan to either pause it, or have it go back to any previous shot and retake it. It's not ideal, but it's worked well for me.
- And coming out in a few months, is the Gigapan Epic 100, which will take some DSLR's, I think it takes up to 3.5lbs, so you're not able to use huge zoom lenses, but they tested D40/D60/etc with a 135mm lens and that seems to work well. I think it's rumored to be slightly more expensive at $450.
And if anybody wants to take a look at my weak gigapans, here they are.

still, you could use this apparatus but forgo the included wonky stitching software.

How about just the "GigaPan". I know, crazy idea, but that's just me.

Or just use a wide angle lens...

The whole point is
"You create a photo that can be zoomed in to the full potential of your lens while still maintaining a vast master shot."
But I see your point...it's just you cannot re-create this using a single camera shot.

Yes if only somebody have invented a sort of a film on which the image could have been recorded directly from the lens using some silver salts...

wait
What?

and you could view it without batteries and a computer? I think you are on to something.

Are you suggesting there is a way that I can frame the pictures that I take without plugging in the frame.
I'm intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
@bosskev: Just thought I'd let you know that I'm stealing that.

Please hand me your cellphone. I need to smash it.

And really, it seems to have failed against Xur and his Kodan Armada of panorama shots if the batteries died.
