@LittleJon: I compose for TV and Film, so the answer is inverted: For my job, the more important question is, "What style don't you make?"
Essentially, you have to be able to be a musical chameleon. It's quite often that a day might contain several jobs with many or completely different styles.
This is a small collection of recent work that might be entertaining to illustrate that point:
I listen to just about anything at work, just as long as I'm in the mood for it whether its Rock and/or Roll, Rap, Pop or even Classic. Though most of the time its JPop, JRock or anything anime related.
Though right now I am watching season 1 of Battlestar Galactica in my cubicle!
I used to enjoy listening to music at work until the only Alternative Rock station in the area went top 40. We went from Weezer, Ludo, etc... to Pink, Kelly Clarkson, and Jonas Bros. FML.
@PETAKillsKittens_GitEmSteveDav...: Can you get internet radio? If so, see my comment above for two standout recommendations. Either guaranteed to be 99.4% Jonas-free.
In my apartment (I work from home) (if you can call it work), I have music playing 24/7. And, since I'm too lazy to deal with ripping and managing my CD collection (1000s), 99% of the time that music is from internet radio, either Radio Paradise or SomaFM: Indie Pop Rocks! The only time I turn music off is when I switch to home theater mode for a movie.
@OMG! Ponies!: I sit next to the server room, so if I want to hear something other than banks and banks of humming machinery... Well on the headphones go, can style that block out ambient noise and allow me to pretend to not notice people wanting help for another 1.8 seconds longer than would normally be socially acceptable.
Though nothing so grand as "The Beatles" current caressing my ears, instead I have "The Sparrows and the Nightingales" by Wolfsheim.
I fall into the category of....I used to like this blog that had cool posts about gadgets, but someone seems to have replaced my bookmark to it with a site about music.

Anyway, what the hell is with the people who have complained about Giz' Audiophile articles? Speakers are gadgets, you friggin' maroons.

1) Morning Joe on TV
2) Shower
3) Podcasts for my subway commute (45 min for 45 min.)
4) Lunch with co-workers
5) Meetings that involve other people
6) Steam room at the gym
7) Watching television with my wife
8) While sleeping
Otherwise, I have music running all the time, either from my iTunes, my iPod, or Pandora.

Stuff without vocals if I need to read or write. Like Acid-Jazz, Downbeat/Dub, Trip-Hop, Drum n' Bass, general loungy electronica, tiny bit of trance.
Rock (stuff with vocals) works for design work, back when I was doing stuff that involved numbers and AutoCAD.

There appears to be a sitar on my file cabinet, somewhere between the Alvarez case and the In Re Thompson files.

i don't mind posts about music gadgets during music week--but the endless lists of staff 'first cd' lists, etc. put me in a bit of a bad mood.
i'll get over it. i'm sure puppy dogs and ponies week next week will make me feel nicer. :-)
