@Demonbird: that's actually nothing like the Verizon service I've experienced in the retail stores.
sure the employees are morons and dont know anything about phones or Verizon's policies (which is why it seems like Verizon's policies vary from store to store) but they're actually quite helpful.
now the customer service reps from the corporate Verizon, that's a different story...
@yyandrew: I wish I had your experience. I've dealt with multiple groups in person, multiple managers, at all at best only slightly better than the little joke I had up there, and called CS I don't know how many times, and been blatantly told "We have no idea what to do."
When this just started The Consumerist threw in article up about it.
In august.
I want out without paying an ETF very very bad.
@Demonbird: Considered selling the remainder of your contact? I know that used to be possible (and popular), but haven't looked into it lately.
Basically someone else will take over the terms of your contract, and start service with your remaining months left, and you're out of contract w/o and ETF. They generally take the phone too, or can bring their own.
@Demonbird: When I was getting my Droid...
Dumb girl: The hinge on my LG EnV Touch broke, and so did the inside screen.
Employee: Do you have insurance?
Dumb girl: Yes, this is the third time in a month that I've had an EnV Touch break. Last time it was the outside screen, too.
Employee: *takes phone* Ok, I'll get you another one.
@pjfranke:
finding someone to buy my contract seems like it would be very, very hard.
If I do wind up paying the ETF, the funny thing is I could get an iphone and still save $50 a month with AT&T and make my money back in savings in 8 months.
I just have a clamshell with Verizon.
@Dallifornia:
That's my issue, but with the Nokia Intrigue.
It has a software incompatability issue with the Verizon network, where it can randomly be forced into a constant reboot cycle until you either change phones, or change numbers, and if you change numbers it can still come back, due to it being a software issue with the network.
I had it happen once, googled it, found it was a MASS defect, and why it occurs, and that getting another intrigue changes nothing, as it immediately suffers the same issue.
I went to Verizon, they denied the issue existed, refused to see my printouts from their own sites product reviews mentioning it.
Gave me another intrigue. It died instantly.
Mailed me another (The whole first deal was over two weeks, they refused to cut me a credit on my bill.)
That one received the message and worked for 6 weeks, then died.
Return to Verizon
"STOP BREAKING YOUR PHONE!
Unless you take xx basic clamshell we choose then you have to just get another intrigue. And we won't credit your bill this downtime either."
So, I went and talked to a higher up in the store, and his response
"Well, I hope you get that fixed." and he walked away.
6 years of business with Verizon, and that's how it goes.
@Demonbird: How long do you have left? My googlefu found a story from 12/31/08 in the NYT, that links to [celltradeusa.com] and [cellswapper.com] . Haven't used them myself, but considered it. Also, when the person takes over your contract, they're able to change their calling plan, they don't have to keep yours. Your basic phone might not help things though.
It's constantly moving and would probably get annoying real fast, not to mention likely taking up more processor cycles than is necessary on a phone which, by nature, need as many as they can get.
Nonetheless.....I bloody love that Tron-ish background on the Nexus One. Google? Give me this phone now.
Ah, the joys of outsourcing your core business (developing software) to a third party, in a country that's world-renowned for totally ignoring intellectual-property laws... reminds me of the whole, "Green Dam" software the Chinese government was going to mandate, which was later found to be a rip-off of a U.S. filtering app.
Microsoft has a big "research facility" in China, and I refuse to believe they can't build a micro-blogging service on their own.
Microsoft China? Guys? I used to be a vendor in the system, and built some internal web-based apps for the North American division - and I'm almost local (in Bangkok), so if you need a not-illegal twitter clone, I can free up my schedule, seriously ;-)
McDs in Japan is immaculate and sparkling, with comfy seats. Space is at a premium, however. Fellow patrons are considerate. Food is goodenuff, but ordering just coffee and dessert and taking advantage of wifi is certainly doable. They even provide special nooks or lines for people to work, equipped with electrical outlets to charge cellphones and laptops.
It's important to remember that Mc. Donalds originally gained a free WiFi service as a partnership with Nintendo for the DS's online functions. After the partnership expired, I guess they put a price on it.
It probably won't be used by many laptop owners - who the heck drags a laptop into a Mc. Donald's? However, it is perfect for things like your kids' Nintendo DS and an iPhone.
I did just once. I was homeless for a few months and I needed the internet to apply to the University so I went into McDonalds to fill out the online application.
Robot movement is getting pretty damn advanced. If only we could come up with a lightweight efficient power system for them then we could have mechs one day...

I wouldn't go with them if I wanted one anyway due to inevitable higher rates, and horrendous customer service.
"This model phone has a mass defect. This is my fifth one int wo months."
"STOP BREAKING YOUR PHONE!"
"...Get your manager."
"No."
"WHAT?"
