HAL, GlaDOS, the autopilot (did he have a name?), and Terminator all have glowing red lights. Is this because HAL made them popular? Or perhaps is there a more sinister plot brewing here?...
Hrmmmm...

Both HAL and 2001: A Space Odyssey are considered to be landmark achievements of both science fiction and cinema in general.
You are not an idiot but you are not well-versed in sci-fi - not if you haven't read or seen 2001.
The story is ultimately about evolution. Dave Bowman, the protagonist at the end, is a man nearly devoid of emotion. HAL is a computer which ends up afflicted with paranoia.
Go read 2001.

Arthur C Clarke is basically the father of many inventions we have today. He basically predicted the coming of Geostationary Satellites. His work is some of the best Science Fiction out there. Kubrick only directed the movie. Clarke wrote it.

And this was back in the 40's when Space travel didn't exist and rocket technology was in its infancy!

HAL. He'll flash freeze you in space or kill you in your hibernation.
