The only thing i could see this hurting is the 'google appliance'.

An open source equivalent to that might just hurt google, however google has name recognition and companies large enough to warrant the appliance probably don't trust open source.

Belive it or not people there are better search engines than google, but google is hardwired into everyone's brain that it's useless to fight it. You could take google, make it give you free money when you search, and send out a hooker every 100 searches, and also enlarge your member, and STILL not beat google. Just because.

You cannot kill google, it's not possible, i even ran it through some google searches and google agrees.

@paragraph: "You cannot kill google, it's not possible." That's what people thought about Yahoo and Microsoft, before Google came along.

It's not about brand power. Build a better mousetrap, and people will come. So far, no one has done that. Show me a better search engine than Google, I haven't seen it.

I use Google because it's fast, simple, and gives me relevant results. Show me a search engine that's faster, or gives me more relevant results, and doesn't show annoying flash/image ads, and I'll start using it.

Also, I have yet to find an email provider that has a better spam filter than Gmail. My Yahoo and Hotmail accounts get littered with spam in my inboxes daily, I can count on one hand the number of spam messages or false positives that have wound up in my Gmail account.

@loose_screw: Hotmail is complete and utter shit. I logged in one day to discover that the entire site was reformatted around this Live service, and to also find out that my mailbox was completely empty. It only takes one time for me to lose complete faith in it. Gmail in beta has served me better than AOL and Hotmail combined.

@loose_screw: Google's lead in search only gets bigger because it's not just the refining of an algorithm, it's also the development of massive hardware architecture. For a company to compete with it, it would not only have to build a better mousetrap, it would have to be able to build a billion of them while still in startup mode.
