@EBone: Nobody knows. Cyanogen is currently working on getting it to those with rooted phones but Qualcomm apparently hasn't released the drivers for it. But nobody knows if Google will do so officially.
@MarcusMaximus: This is what worries me about Android. While many complain about the closed Apple system, since Apple controls the hardware and software, even the older handsets get the new OS (minus a few hardware dependent features like compass).
With so many different hardware-specific tweaked versions of Android, you have to rely on the manufacturer to re-tailor the latest OS to their hardware. What if they decide they just don't want to? For instance, the Motorola Cliq would require a pretty refined upgrade for their custom software overlay. And if the Cliq didn't meet Moto's sales goals, they probably won't bother.
I guess only a *true* Google-branded phone would get all the upgrades. But then again, wasn't the G1 a Google branded phone?
@EBone: The G1 is a Google branded phone. There's also no word yet on just when or if it might get 2.0. I'm not exactly sure why, but for some reason the Droid get early dibs on Eclair. The source code didn't even drop until after the Droid was released.
Earlier this year, Google said there'd be at least 2 new updates this year. For what that's worth, and for whoever that's referring to, we may never know. T-Mobile/HTC haven't said anything for certain about the G1 not getting Eclair, so it may happen yet.
I will say this, though, as annoying as it is that each carrier has to modify it for their own handsets, they at least have the motivation of an lively group of early adopter nipping at their heels. ;-)
Hopefully each manufacturer will take the same approach HTC is and make a single UI for each of their phones, so they don't have to keep retweaking Android for each handset.
So do you have to adb into the phone in order for this to work? I hate having to slog through countless pages of "omg it's not working halp" and "yes it is, you're just dumb" posts to FINALLY get to the part where someone lays out how to initiate the darn thing.
@FooSchnickens - BPH Free: Ok, looks like I got it working. It does use ADB to push everything to the phone so be sure you have the drivers on your computer before you start.
Now all I need is a car adapter that will also work with the phone's sound output and I'm all set. My iPod is feeling more and more obsolete these days. It's kind sad. :( #googlemapsnavigationg1
@00000000: Seems to work just like the review giz posted earlier this month. I agree on the voice being a bit grating at times, but it gets the job done. It even knew the secret back way I use to get to work that avoids all the traffic.
I'll have to fiddle with it some more this weekend whilst running some errands. #googlemapsnavigationg1
Well, that pretty much decides it for me. I'm waiting it out to see if the G1 will get an official update, but if the other phones get it and the G1ers don't, I'm going back to rooting.
XDA, Cyanogen, and all the others: God bless you, you princes of Android, you kings of new software. #googlemapsnavigationg1
@OCEntertainment: I've more or less given up on "official" releases after seeing what the likes of cyanogen and jesusfreke can do in only a few day's time after they hit the airwaves. #googlemapsnavigationg1
Google Maps Nav is great, but not the answer for everyone. There is still going to be people who cannot rely on always being in a coverage area for their nav to work.
The first time I relied on this type of solution, I ended up in an area with no coverage and had to rely on my clients to find our way out. #googlemapsnavigation
Garmin and Tom-tom should be out of business now! They have been charging us a lot of money for their apps. Now, it will be no more! #googlemapsnavigation
@hcho3: it costs a lot of money to develop apps like these - Google does it free because it can and because it needs to. If Garmin and Tom Tom didn't charge THEN they'd be out of business. #googlemapsnavigation
@crackel: Of course... U think I would not know that. I am not an idiot. As a consumer, am I suppose to care about how Garmin and Tom Tom at all? No.
As a customer, I only care about which company can give me a better value for cheaper price. That's how it's done in United States, or in the world. So, thanks for your explanation. But, I hope tom tom and Garmin take some actions for this. I am already move away from my iphone. #googlemapsnavigation
@Graymalkin56: Well, I would hope that they have the good sense to cache n minutes' worth of maps along the route you're following, just in case, or possibly even the whole route if you're not driving from coast to coast.
I still don't see why map info cannot be transmitted via satellite when there is no phone reception. I hope they give the option to load the maps onto whichever phones end up getting supported #googlemapsnavigation
@ALT: ... You really have no idea how GPS works, do you? GPS cannot transmit data. GPS is merely a collection of satellites that a GPS receiver uses to triangulate its position with. That is - the receiver itself is what figures out its own position. The GPS satellites don't even know... they just broadcast a certain frequency and some other static data, and it's up to the receivers to figure it out from there. To say that the satellites should send map data is like saying a TV should make you breakfast, or something.
(Unless, of course, you mean to say that it should work with any device capable of GPS even without a cell siganl, by loading maps onto a storage device via a PC. In which case, I'd definitely agree.)
@Helo: That is why I now ride a horse back and forth to work and make all of my appliances out of wood cut from the finest timber. No Google is going to find me, I'm off the grid. Oh and Amish. #googlemapsnavigation
Its got GPS in it. Its not just relying on AGPS to get a best guess on where you are.
The problem is that you still need phone service to load the map. The G1 will tell you where you are if you don't have cell service, its just you're somewhere on a checkered grid. #googlemapsnavigation
@phunnyballs: Yeah. I knew something was wrong when I saw the bundled apps... then I saw the disclaimer at the bottom of the screen saying that "Chrome OS is not associated with Google."
Now the link is down... "This site has been disabled for violations of our Terms of Service." That doesn't make sense, though, since whomever it was was simply re-distributing FOSS. Maybe Google took exception to the "Chrome OS" name. #googlemapsnavigation
