this is so wrong is so many ways. it should literally be illegal, companies should not be allowed to unlist themselves from any directory, especially when it comes to things like a news paper. We are supposed to live in an age of free information, and a company like MS should not be allowed to buy us out of our access to said information. it's time we do something about things like that.
i think i'll call a lawyer tonight... if one of you is a lawyer, let me know it would be more convenient.
@SkirMernet: Well, Ponies! is a lawyer of some kind. Though, 'round here he's really mostly helpful for incognito bouts of sarcasm, trapping helpless commenters in his web of confusion. Folks take him seriously, compare him to Hitler, but by that point, it's already too late. His venom has spread through their entire comment. There is no hope. They are exposed as noobs. Then the feeding frenzy begins.
On topic: I'd be very curious as to just what laws this would violate. Not to say there are none, I simply don't know. Does it count as anti-competitive? Does Microsoft get to take the "we're not a search giant, so it's not abusing a monopoly" loophole? And what effect would such a deal have on the users? As has been said time and again, if it's not on Google it doesn't exist. What happens when a particular search engine gets exclusive indexing rights? How would the millions of Google users who don't know about Bing react to the non-existence of FoxNews? (Joyfully is, of course, assumed. Nevertheless.)
I suppose it was too much to hope that the search wars would continue by matching feature-sets alone. Hopefully someone higher up can talk some sense into Murdoch/Microsoft. This will only cause confusion, I think.
@OMG! Ponies!: Is Google really much of an underdog though? It seems to me that they've got one of the biggest names out there, as well as a sizeable dominance in the internet.
Sure, Microsoft is a massive corporation and all but Google ain't some new up-and-comer, you know?
@Mikestan: "Curses! More money! Now I'll have to work even harder to dodge taxes! And damn! I'll have to donate even more money to a charity! ARRRRRRRRRRGH! CURSE YOU ORPHANS, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY SHRIVELED BLACK HEART!"
@Homerjay is utterly alone.: I always perceived the internet as a sort of patient, malevolent and manipulative evil... seething and bubbling under the surface, just waiting for the right moment to set itself loose, using entities such as Google and Microsoft as pawns in a bid for control of the entire world.
But, you know... it was just a feeling.
Diane:Carol Anne - listen to me. Do NOT search for "the light." Stop browsing where you are. Turn away from it. Don't even look at the search engine.
@MacAttack7388: Darth Bing:I've been waiting for you, Google-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now *I* am the master. Google-Wan:Only a master of evil, Bing.
[algorithm-sabers clash] Darth Bing:Your searches are weak, old man. Google-Wan:You can't win, Bing. If you block my searches, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
george bush is no longer president and mccain lost. anti-competitive practices, anti-net-neutrality practices like this won't get the free pass they did in the first 8 years of this century.
@dashielm: don't bring politics into gadgets it ruins a beautiful thing. Like imagine a porno with Jessica Alba and it's a lezbo scene. Hot right? The other girl is Rosie O'Donnell. That's how I feel.
My fondest hope is for Bing to be able to rival Google. If anyone has the money or resources to do it , it is Microsoft. Its never good when a company has a monopoly. Maybe the competition will spur on move innovation in the search engine field.
@franco1975: Granted monopolies are bad in a general way of thinking, Google, as long as I've known them, have proven themselves not to be evil like their motto. Others may beg to differ but if there was ever a monopoly to be allowed, I'd feel comfortable with them being one. I don't shlep all my personal information to begin with so I don't fear their ever knowing presence.
@BergenCountyJC can edit his name?: Google isnt evil at all. I love Google but I would like another equally powerful company to provide a different perspective of the internet to work *along side* Google's view. Whether we like it or not , the information we are receiving from the internet is being moulded by Google based on what they decide to list or not list and in what order things are listed. Haven't you ever wondered what sites you're missing out on just because Google doesnt list it? A secondary advantage is that the competition between them can only benefit the users.
@franco1975: Well I agree with the perspective aspect however my point was saying if there had to be an monopoly, I'd be ok with Google being it. All the freebies Google has churned out over the past few years, do you think Yahoo or M$ would have offered ANY of them free?
I for one support Rupert and his efforts to remove his "news" from anything but his own networks. Perhaps after the internet is purged of Fox News CNN and others might remember how to be a news channel again. Imagine a world where news reporters actually work to gather the news. I heard of such a time long ago that such a thing was true. A man by the name of Walter spent time researching and getting facts before reporting on stories. It was an odd time when Led Zeppelins, Steel Dans, Bees and Gees roamed the earth, Floyds where Pink and 8 different tracks where all the music you could get on a device. #rupertmurdoch
@Thing2169: There are competent alternatives to all of these sources. And really, I don't know why anyone who relies on the websites of these assets should worry. It's not as if they'll disappear from the Web; they'll still be here, just not on Google. If you like what you're getting from these websites then just go directly to them and use their built-in search function. Sheesh. #rupertmurdoch

If he did this, how many bands would be removed from Google because they rely on MySpace for their Web site?
Hulu would also go away from Google. Rottentomatoes? Photobucket?
