Actually, I've been wanting that Android indicator for a while. Being constantly on for chat is convenient sometimes, but some of my more chatty friends get difficult to keep up with when I'm on my phone.

I just tried out this Labs feature (which apparently has to be turned on for the person viewing the chat list), and unfortunately, being logged into a desktop client doesn't override the Android icon. Still, it's kinda nice.

On the deranged paranoia front: what the heck? Websites can easily tell what browser/client you're viewing something from. Why is this so scary? I get that the "Google creep" is coming from the TechCrunch article (that's two idiotic things to come from that site today) and not Gizmodo, but still. You could not honestly be freaked out by this specifically unless you were already looking for it.

Just refreshed my Gmail account. It went from "GMAIL by Google Beta" to "GMAIL by Google"

I am kinda surprised. I thought they would be in beta forever.

I thought it was called Gmail Beta; everyone just called it Gmail for short.

Now if only there were a way to totally turn off SMS so I'm not charged for every stupid text message that I get but don't want...maybe with an accompanying message like (555-1234 does not accept text messages).

A warning: It actually sends 2 texts for every message you send. One contains the message, the second says "soandso@gmail.com sent you an SMS grom Gmail!"

A less serious warning: Texting back to the Gmailer also opens a second window in Gmail.

@daftrok: If you're not sure why you're giving thanks then why bother replying? Did you just want attention?

For those non attention-whores who are also wondering why he labled that a warning, it's because not everyone has unlimited txt plans, and some don't have txt at all. So, you may not know you're sending 2 txt's for every 1 message you send, and you may not know you're pushing the recipient over their txt limit and are now charging them twice the amount of a txt for each message you send. And with the txt price gouging going on these days you can rack someone up a pretty hefty bill...

@admoseremic: Some clarification: I just enabled it and tested it out with my number. It does send two txt's at first, but this is a one time deal. It lets the person know they have a txt and how to reply or opt out of receiving them. After that, all subsequent messages are just one txt.

@.king: Have you tried to see if it is permanent for that contact or does it send the initial message every time that you start a new session? For example, if I text someone using gmail, it's going to send two messages for the first message and then only one from then on, but if I sign out, clear my cookies, and come back later is it going to send two messages with the first one again if I text the same person or will it remember that you have already chatted with that person via gmail and bypass the message?

@ceilingFANBOY: It seems like it's permanent for that contact. I logged out, cleared cookies and restarted my browser and did another test just to make sure.
