In reply to Google Voice About to Get More Amazing By Letting You Port Your Number
i've had google voice for months, and grandcentral before that - it's great, but i will NEVER port my number until google is bulletproof (think gmail outages, now imagine a carrier simulation!)

also, peeps forget that you lose your mobile2mobile unlimited and many other plan advantages if you were to port.

for me, the big advantage is a unique number that i give out to ONLY certain folks and in turn configure to auto-ring me at all lines - kind of like a super emergency line - and allows for amazing spam control should the number fall into the wrong hands (can you say, "new once" keeps calling? ;)

I'd be pretty stoked about this.

I've had a Google Voice account since Grand Central let me in a couple years ago. I don't hand that number out to many people but do have an old 206 number from living in Seattle that I'd love to port. I waste a bunch of money every month keeping a low end T-Mobile account that forwards the calls to my new city since I'd had that number for 10 years.

I'd be happy to hand out invites if only GVoice gave us any to hand out!

@James Cooper - Chief Geek at TJSL: You do know you can save a few $$ per month by moving your number to T-Mobile prepaid? $100 a year. I have a home phone number my parents have had since the '70s I would love to put on my Google Voice account.

The Pre dialing screen is so much better looking than the iPhone's.

A couple weeks ago I ride my bike into work, get hit by a seizure, have a fist of gray blob pulled out of my skull - and when I finally come back it is to Google Voice allowing possibly allowing us to port our numbers over? Good news, sure - but, I guess I was hoping for something a little more exciting. Maybe some neon lights or something? Oh well.

I have Google Voice but have only a couple of friends that know the number, so being able to port over my main number would be a nice trick. I think the larger issue, as Matt nicely raised, is the continued evaporation of these pipes we are all using to communicate. The more they open them, the happier we are - but the less power they have. Google's plan of world domination seems to continue according to their pink fuzzies group hug plan. Good for them.

Does anyone know of another company/service that will (for free or a reasonable price) allow me to have a local number that I can forward to my cell phone? I just moved into an apartment and don't have a local number for the call box and this service would be perfect.

I missed the chance to sign up for this back in the day, and and am eagerly waiting for this service to come back online.

I thought Grand Central is still not taking any new customers and will not indefinitely.

Wow, the people behind Newber totally jacked Canonical's Ubuntu logo. I see a lawsuit on the horizon
