The possibly good, possibly terrible news, depending on your tastes: It's going to be a top-down affair. iPhone-owning GTA fans of various vintages, fight!

Devising a decent control scheme for a GTA3-style third-person on the iPhone sounds laughably hard, so I see the fact that GTA: Chinatown Wars will be a top-down shooter, a la the original 90s crime simulators we all fell in love with back in the late 90s, as a good thing. Plus, the DS version of this same game was pretty great, aside from the terrible graphics. The forthcoming PSP version, pictured above, looks way better, as should the iPhone's (no screens yet, oddly enough), which is due in "fall." [Rockstar Games]

<![CDATA[If You Just Got a Video Game Console, Get These Games]]> Kotaku's put their game of the year awards up, and it's a pretty good start to building your gaming collection if you've just gotten an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii over the holidays.

Although their categories, like best art, best sound and best innovation may not be a great template for finding a game in a genre that YOU like, it is a jumping board to checking out quality games—which all of these are. We'd definitely go with GTA4, Metal Gear Solid 4, plus Dead Space (if you like shooters). [Kotaku]

<![CDATA[GTA IV's iPhone Parody Cuts to the Heart of Apple's Mystique, Then Stabs it Repeatedly]]> Just when we thought we couldn't love GTA IV more, they go and make this Apple parody. You can see it when you go into an internet cafe. We think it reflects quite truthfully on the Apple audience, don't you? Now excuse me while I call up my publisher to line up a How to Do Everything with Your iFruit Phone. [TUAW]

<![CDATA[Google Maps Goes Gangsta - GTA IV Maps Ahoy]]> Even Google Maps is getting in on GTA IV fever, making an online version of the map that came with the game. In a way, it's much better than the paper map because you can click on and off different points of interests (missions, restaurants, safe houses, gun shops) and know where you're going. What with Google mapping out the ocean, an imaginary world isn't that much of a stretch. Are we the only ones here that wishes they were playing GTA IV instead of working? <![CDATA[GTA IV Leaked Online, Piracy Wins Again]]> GTA IV, supposedly the biggest thing in the history of modern electronic entertainment, has been leaked on the internet. If you're one of the lucky ones with a modded 360 and a copy of the game, disconnect from Live before you play it. Rockstar is watching out for people who go online with these before they're supposed to. [Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Limited Edition Xbox Elite Consoles Bear Smashing GTA Branding, Not for You and I]]> Grand Theft Auto IV is coming, and with it Microsoft are dropping an awesome, limited edition, Xbox Elite console, which features GTA branding all over. The gaming beast will not be launched to the public, but instead will be given away as press kits to promote the new title, which kinda sucks. Only 500 units will be produced, and each will carry a unique identifier etched on.

The artwork is apparently inked on with genuine, automotive-quality paint and the console will also ship with a snazzy, all metallic case, housing a number of different peripherals. Now, why haven't we received our unit yet? Did we piss someone off by accident? Hit the link to checkout some more cracking images. [Complex via Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Sex Mod Smacks Down GTA: San Andreas]]> Kotaku is all over the breaking news that the Entertainment Ratings Safety Board has rescinded its rating for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and urged retailers to stop selling the game. The move is the latest fallout from the Hot Coffee mod (an explicit sex game hidden inside GTA:SA, for those just joining the story). Notes Kotaku,

The decision could have a sweeping impact on the industry as a whole. The decision forces the ESRB to consider Easter eggs, hidden content and perhaps even the ability to mod a game in rating future games. It also could lead to a crack-down by the industry on the modding community, forcing game developers to spend more time making their games mod and crack proof lest they be held responsible for some future modification of their game.
Good times.
