Bird Flu Detection by "VereFlu" Disposable Lab-on-a Chip

You thought avian flu was so 2006, didn't you? Not so STMicroelectronics, which has been quietly working away to build a new lab-on-a-chip device to detect the virus. Dubbed VereFlu, it's actually able to detect many strains of influenza virus, including human type A and B, and the killer avian H5N1 strain. Better yet, the disposable chip takes just two hours whereas traditional tests take much longer, increasing its life-saving potential. Having passed hospital trials in Singapore last year, its launch means you may expect to see it pop up in hospitals and airports over the coming years. [Reuters]

Hitachi-LG Brings Blu-ray and HD DVD Together in Combo Drive

Considering they had the first 4x Blu-ray burner, we're not too shocked Hitachi-LG is also claiming dibs on the first combo Blu-ray/HD DVD drive for your PC. The wonderfully named GGW-H10N Super Multi Blue will playback, read, and record single and dual-layer Blu-ray discs (at 4x or 3.5x) and it'll also have the skills to playback HD DVDs. Think of it as a BH100 for your PC. Here's the catch, when the drive hits shelves in May it'll go for $1,200, which is a little too rich for our blood. More »

LG Brings HD DVD/Blu-ray Combo Drive to Your PC

Just when we thought our living rooms would be the only places to benefit from that Blu-ray/HD DVD love that LG surprised us with yesterday, news comes of a new LG drive that will let us play both flavors of high definition discs on our PCs (along with traditional DVDs). As if that weren't enough, the new GGW-H10N will also be able to record 50GB of data on dual-layer BD-R/BD-RE media. The drive will be available in March, though we suggest sitting this one out considering its "under $1,200" price tag. More »

LG GBW-H10N Super Multi Blue: 4x Blu-ray Burner, Fastest for a While

The leapfrogging has begun with Blu-ray burners, with LG hopping to the next level with its Super Multi Blue (GBW-H10N), a 4x Blu-ray internal PC writer that can lay down data at 18Mbps. Why should we care? The LG Super Multi Blue's fastest competition can only write Blu-ray discs at half that speed, 2x. But with the slower-writing Blu-ray rewriteable discs, alas, LG's burner is still stuck at 2x. More »

Hitachi-LG Readies World's First 4X Blu-ray Burner

Still haven't picked a side in the high definition disc war yet? Perhaps being able to burn a Blu-ray disc at 4X will help decide your allegiance? If so, keep your eyes on Hitachi-LG, since they just announced to availability of a Blu-ray burner that will burn discs at a speedy 4X, rather than the usual, dorky 2X. The burner, GBW-H10N, doesn't support dual-layer discs, nor does it burn rewriteable discs at 4X—that happens at 2X. Still, you can't knock LG-Hitachi for trying. Besides, how many times in the near future do you think you're actually going to burn and reburn 25GBs of data? More »
