I blame Verizon. I'm sure they are aware of the fact that those messages were coming from a teens phone, they should have alerted the father.

@Shamoononon thanks Rocephin: After reading all of this I can see where you're coming from. If as a customer you have no way of checking mid-month how many texts you've sent then, yes, Verizon should notify someone when it gets to this exorbitant amount. No, they aren't required to do this, but to say they have 'good' service they should do it. This is why I fear bandwidth caps for the internet. I have no way of knowing how much I've consumed until I get the bill.

That is total bullshit.

What do you mean "has to buy his daughter another phone in the future"?

I don't see why he'd ever buy her a phone again. If she wants one, she can get a job, and pay for her own damn phone.

so what i sent close to this many once (obv not 10k but > 5k) and you just call verizon and they bring it down to a little bit more than the price of the unlimited plan.

as to her grades all i can say is rofl because i get A/Bs and i txt like nonstop. she prob dumb about it and got caught or something......

@ryanbrenner: When did facebook hating become such a big thing? I imagine that there is an equal ratio of stupid comments from facebook members to Gawker members. I personally use facebook out of ease, since I'm on facebook to do other things in addition to reading Giz.

Besides, isn't Gawker an online community, perhaps just at a smaller level than facebook?

@Ryan Peavey: The issue is that Gizmodo commenters had to earn their right to post via an ancient and draconian process in which comments were submitted into the ether, read and reviewed by the editors, and approved based on their content. In Ye Olden Days, posts in SMS-speak and the like would not have been approved.

The Facebook login system opened the floodgates for anyone with a Facebook account to post whatever they wanted, however they wanted, without any review process. Since anyone can get a Facebook account, the end result is actually a *higher* number of idiots, proportionally, than we saw from the pool of "approved" commenters.

That's not to say that everyone posting via Facebook is an idiot, but users like Ryan Brenner aren't doing you any favors. You're basically judged by the company you keep, and that company currently brought his stupidity to the top of a thread.
