Yup; its shockingly poor design to use red as a full indicator ... SHOCKINGLY bad. The guys who designed this need to go back to school.

It's design like this that causes half the usability problems when it comes to product design :/

@nathanhornby000001: I turned this thing for two days and it is still on empty - must be broken.

Let's hope these guys don't work on the Mercedes with the auto-stop at traffic lights, what with their 'red means go' mindset and all.

@nathanhornby000001: That and the dollar store build quality. Most of these will be sporting broken handles inside of a week.

Shouldn't it be Red to indicate low/no charge, green to say your done, and maybe orange while you are charging?
Just cos thats kinda how things have been for ages, green = go, good, etc

IIRC, we live in a world of thermodynamics. what irks me is that you're not making energy, you're really just transfering your own mechanical energy into that battery. you "burn" calories to crank dat battery and you replace that energy with food!

@ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat: But most of us can afford to burn a few extra calories to make a little electricity.

What this needs is a battery powered winder! LOL

Seriously this is brilliant. I have a bike light that cranks, 30 seconds will get me about 10 - 15 minutes of useful light. These might not be practical for everyday use, but they would be perfect for survival/camping/military uses.

And while I am at it, where is my crank powered cell?

Next concept: Kinetically charged batteries! If you can put a whole crank system on the battery, you could just as easily put some sort of kinetic energy charger inside.

Most of these concepts are like my 9th grade notebook doodle "inventions" except with better renders.

I think the designer got a bit mixed up...
Red for charged, green for low power,
Put a lot of thought into this one didn't they

That's an awesome idea. I'd buy one simply for my wireless mouse.

Fully charged in 20 minutes of continuous cranking? That seems a bit tedious... but I excuse it for the fact that it's attractive and surprisingly practical for situations where you need batteries and can't readily buy new ones or charge more traditional rechargeable AAs.
