I'll be waiting for some dumbass to throw this in their regular laptop and start bitching about vibration/rattling.

@jayhawk11 owns property now!!!: Hello, my name is dumbass. I put thin laptop hard drives in spaces made for larger ones, and use screws to screw them down so they don't vibrate/rattle. I'm from 2000 when some still-usable laptops used thicker hard drives that needed to be upgraded to thinner ones. I seem to be doing just fine, thank you for the concern!

Might be useful for PMP's. Otherwise - how much lighter it is?

@suland: A 2.5" drive is significantly larger than the current 1.8 that iPods and the like use. The weight probably won't make much of a difference since it's only a matter of ounces.

@Kaiser-Machead: Ounces is a lot if you're talking about PMPs. Maybe they can make a super thin 1.8" HDD and put those in PMPs instead.

@daftrok: 1.8" drives are fairly thin as it is, so there's probably not going to be any considerable benefit getting thinner. Besides, HDD-based PMP's are a dying breed. I don't suppose they're long for this world, what with 64GB flash-based PMP's now reaching more affordable prices, making the way for possibly twice that by the end of next year.

Thinnest. 2.5". As in, thinner than other 2.5" drives? Yet it's a 2.5" drive.
    Does. Not. Compute.

Useless if all it does is play back FLAC rips of CDs. I could see some value in it, however, if it plays back 24bit/96khz Vinyl rips. CDs just don't come in 96khz.

@mrburglar: Do I think I'm going to get better music quality from a 96kHz/24bit rip of a vinyl than a redbook CD? Why on earth would you think otherwise? See, one is analog. Therefore when you digitize it at a higher resolution and sampling rate, you will get a digital representation that is truer to the originally recorded music. Not particularly hard to understand.

Have there been any reports of drives failing AFTER the firmware update? I've updated the firmware on mine, but I'm afraid to trust it. I think I'm going to put it in an external box and use it for a TimeMachine drive on my Mac. At least then, if it fails, it's only taken the backup with it.

Wow that sucks. Getting my new MOBO tomorrow so I can finish the new setup with 2 1tb Seagate barracudas (32MB cache) in raid 0 and I was really excited. Good thing I haven't opened the boxes yet.

Or I could just roll the dice and see if they work. If they don't, class action lawsuit here I come.

Heh, and here I can remember a day when Seagate released an entire batch of SCSI drives with bad spindles. You could reliably predict their failure time within ~3 weeks based on production date.

I bought *8* Seagate 7200.11 1.5 TB models recently to attach to an Adaptec RAID card. After much huffing, puffing, blowing the house down, and firmware updates, it wound up that 1) Adaptec said they don't support this drive on their cards, and 2) Seagate basically told me, "Don't use these drives in a RAID."

    Grrrr....

@lodleader: I had to download the Newegg patch to get my Seagate 1.5TB drive to stop freezing on me. There's no firmware generally available at Seagates sight. Seagate is the perfect drive company till they have problems then you get to see the really bad side of a company with poor ...down right horrible support.

I'll still go with them chiefly because I have a solution to the known problem with my model and that it's the largest drive money can buy but I seriously wouldn't hesitate to go WD if they can offer superior specs.

The next storage expansion I do will require me to buy 5 drives at once and if I see an alternative, I'll take it; Seagate has burned out all the good will it took them 10 years to build with me.
