Justify Your Gadget: Sony's 16 Camcorders
Sony announced 16 new camcorders at this year's CES. Seriously, 16 brand new freaking camcorders. Why would any product line need so many (often indistinguishable) options? We went straight to the source to find out.Giz Explains: Sony's Sixteen Model CES 2008 Camcorder Line
We've feared Sony's monstrous CES 2008 camcorder release since last year. It's not that we dislike camcorders—or Sony's camcorders. It's that Sony launches about 50 "new" camcorders a year and we try to figure out the trends so you don't have to run through spec sheets for the HDR-SR12, HDR-SR11, HDR-SR10, HDR-UX20, HDR-UX10, HDR-HC9, DCR-SR220, DCR-SR85, DCR-SR65, DCR-SR45, DCR-DVD910, DCR-DVD810, DCR-DVD710, DCR-DVD610, DCR-HC62, and DCR-HC52. Here's their new line, in handy cheat sheet form. Their most consumer-centric new feature? Face detection on stills and video.
HDR-SR Line: 1920x1080 AVCHD camcorders featuring hard drives up to 120GB, Dolby 5.1, Face Detection (on stills and video, which is interesting)
HDR-UX Line: Like the SR line but with DVD recording...or recording to memory stick or 8GB of internal memory (in most models)
DCR-HC Line: The guilt-ridden sector of Sony whose moms invented mini-DV still crank these models out.
Hit the jump for a full rundown with prices. Most new models will be available this March.

How to Add More Storage To Your Sony HDR-SR1 Camcorder
If there's one thing we can say about Sony, it's that they're not entirely against people modding up their gear. That is, if you don't count them forcing Lik-Sang out of business. So if you've been a bad boy present-peeker and know you're getting one of these Sony HDR-SR1 hard drive camcorders for Xmas, you'll be pleased to note that the only thing stopping you from upgrading the 30GB 1.8-inch HD to a 80GB 1.8-inch HD is a single screw. Sony HDR-SR1, Hottest HD Cam on the Market
The folks at Camcorder Info have finished their lengthy thesis on Sony's HDR-SR1. For those who don't remember, the SR1 is Sony's hard drive-packing (30GB) HD camcorder. It has the same CMOS sensor found in Sony's HDR-UX1, so it suffered from the same noise problems users complained about on the UX1. It also couldn't top the Canon HV10, which held on to its best picture crown. The SR1 did provide sharper images with less fuzz than the UX1. More »
