Pioneer Sneakers Light Your Way With Built-In Headlights

Designers Feijun Chen & Bin Zhao clearly were reading Skymall when they dreamed up these "Pioneer" sneakers with built-in recharging headlights. They've got a battery inside which charges on each step, using some mysterious tech that doesn't look piezoelectric. Apparently this can power the LEDs in the front for a full 12 hours. So you can, you know: run in the dark down dim-lit streets, or something. Maybe they'd be handy for doggy-do detection? Just a concept, for now. [Yanko design]

Denso's Smart Headlights Illuminate Hard to See Corners

Driving on dark roads can be tricky, which is why Denso created their new Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) headlights. The system works in conjunction with your GPS and moves your car's headlights according to the direction you're moving your steering wheel. As a result, the lights illuminate upcoming corners, making it safer to make turns. It's not a radical concept, but hopefully it can prevent bad drivers from smashing into other cars. – Louis Ramirez

While LED taillights have become commonplace, we haven't seen them in the front of vehicles until now. The first production cars to use LED headlights will be the Audi R8 and Lexus LS, with more on the way. LEDs last longer and use less power, but by far the most appealing aspect of these tiny lights: the styling possibilities, where they take up much less room and can be distributed on the front of the car in unusual ways.

It's not easy engineering these LEDs for headlight use, because they get hotter than a two-dollar pistol, plus that heat from the engine compartment doesn't help, either. We're glad they sorted that out, though, because check out how way-cool these rides look. Not long from now, vehicles with old-skool conventional headlights will be about as appealing as grandma's mustache. – Charlie White
