As a guitar player who had an awfully hard time adjusting to the fake plastic crap that is guitar hero, I actually think this is a really good idea. I mean we already have so many "rock bands" out there with kids who think they can play real guitars anyway, what could a few more hurt?
I'm not sure if I meant that sarcastically or not, but I do support any idea that leads people away from dumbed-down devices@Tim Reid:

After the first blisters and cramped fingers from trying to play barre chords and such, many give up. It's definitely not as easy as picking up GH or RB and kicking some ass in an afternoon. Of course they could be wusses and start on a cheap electric with really light gauge lead/jazz strings. Throw a distortion pedal on it and make a lot of noise with power chords. Actually, that's probably what most people do. :/

@despisethesun: I don't deny that GH/RB are fun for people (though I find them incredibly repetitive and boring). They obviously sell very well and cater to the dream of being a guitar god. I just feel too constricted playing it, and am not excited by mashing buttons to other people's music tracks.

I simply find it annoying when people imply assumptive connections between real musical skill and skill in these rhythm videogames. The two are lightyears apart. One can be good at both, but neither implies or imparts skill upon the other.
Both can be incredibly fun and rewarding in their own ways.
