The U.S. should implement a new policy where people get to vote whether or not to use tax payers money for embryonic stem cell research. The people who vote no will not have to pay additional tax for this and the ones who votes yes, will. We have the computer technology to keep track of who voted for what. The ones who vote no will also forfeit any rights they have in the future, including their future progeny, to benefit from this research. That means they'll die if we discover any cures with stem cells that might be of help to them in the future. I, including my kids and grandkids will stand idly by and laugh as those who voted no now disintegrate into a slow and painful death. After all, it's what their God wants right? Right?

I, for one, am sick of all the dumb people in the world. They should learn to take ownership of their stupid choices. It's how Darwinism works. If they're dumb enough to believe that embryonic stem cells are life then they're dumb enough for the consequences of their irrational decisions.

I think most countries will miss the boat if they don't invest money and time on researching the stem cells cause it will pay back in the end

but maybe in the end we will get coordinators ^-^

This is great news indeed, and I think we (US) will be seeing some improvements in our stem cell research here for two reasons. The change in office and the fact that most of the procedures (including this one), don't destroy the embryo. It's definately a win/win.

Also, that is complete non-sense that America was not founded by Christians. All of our founding fathers were puritans who fled England. This includes but is not limited to:

George Washington, John Adams, Sam Adams, Charles Carroll, Alexander Hamilton, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, Francis Hopkinson, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Marshall, George Mason, Thomas McKean, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Roger Sherman, Richard Stockton, George Washington, Noah Webster and John Witherspoon.

Hell, the government even approved the bible for use in it's public school system of the 13 colonies. Deists do not consider the bible the written word of God, nor attend church.

There aren't bans on stem cells in the U.S. There are limitations on the use of federal funds to do stem cell research on cell lines other than the ones on a list of those established prior to the legislation. Just FYI, there aren't any neurons (the cells that are actually carrying information and forming the circuits) in the photos above. People have gotten stem cells to differentiate into neurons and glial cells before. This work just seems to have grown them in lump. The signficance is a bit lost on me but I haven't read the source info.

Adult IPS stem cells are notoriously hard to handle - they randomly re-differentiate, usually into skin cells. My lab started a line of these cells very recently, but they're proving difficult to maintain. hopefully it'll get easier with experience.

Although, a quasi-benefit to the ban on new stem cell lines in the US is that we are focusing a lot more on these adult IPS lines; when you take cells from a patient and turn them into stem cells to turn back into tissue of some sort, it's more likely that there wouldn't be rejection issues when you implant the new tissue.

As a person that has done mouse embryonic stem cell research here in the U.S. I can personally testify to the frustration of being held back due to political issues. While doing research on mouse embryonic stem cells helps to elucidate some of the nuances of stem cell biology, the correlation to human stem cells is not 100%. Nevertheless, this is great news from Japan. We must also take into account the ramifications this has on fields other than tissue replacement therapies, such as pharmaceuticals. Hopefully they will have as much success using engineered stem cells.

Good news, everyone! I don't think they'll have any problem duplicating or improving on these results with stem cells other than fetal.

Do remember kids, that we do fetal stem cell research in this country, we just don't create any more new lines of fetal cells. Our president elect, having voted repeatedly to deny medical services to babies born alive during botched abortions should quickly reverse this policy, having no apparent ethical qualms about such things.

Even though it is buried in the article I think it is important to see that this came from adult stem cell research which is a nearly ethical issue free line of research versus embryonic stem cell research which has plenty of ethical issues behind it.

we actually do plenty of stem cell research in the US, just very little embryonic stem cell research.
