What surprised me in the rankings, and perhaps made me a fan of Newsweek's approach, was their ranking of Marathon Oil at 100 on their top 500. Having family that worked for Marathon, I can attest to the fact that they have always had protecting the environment on their agenda, and it was pretty exciting for Newsweek to acknowledge that. Sure, drilling oil and burning it is not a good thing, but we need oil and Marathon is easily the most environmentally friendly oil company out there. #greenpeace
I'm grateful for 1. tech companies that care about their effect on the environment; 2. organizations that let consumers know how we can use discriminate spending to make a difference.
My choices for a new laptop just narrowed drastically. #greenpeace
Greenpeace made their listings with the use of chemicals or lack thereof as the biggest determining factor. Using less toxins is important but less emissions, use of recyclable materials and general less use of materials matters more.
It really is interesting that there's such a huge difference in rankings between the two lists. Yeah, HP being 1st on one and 14th on the other is pretty notable, but check out companies like Apple... 106th on Newsweek's list, and 9th on Greenpeace's list...
106th and 9th?
I guess that goes to show that they really do have quite different criteria for their evaluations.
@brobot: You're right, but you have to keep in mind that Apple only ranks a few companies, so Apple's ranking delta between the two lists isn't as large. Apple is in the front of one list and in the middle of the other whereas HP is at the front of one list and darn near in last place in the other. #greenpeace
@Crazy_Talk: I work in Palo Alto and saw them protesting the morning of the incident, I didn't hear about the "paint job" until later that day. Greenpeace needs to change their tactics and or get lives, they looked like a bunch of idiots.
@Crazy_Talk: Its hard to make a casue as noble as environmental protection look bad, but somehow Greenpeace manages to do it. Must be magic. #greenpeace
I worked for HP at one time, didn't really like the experience, but found it memorable that they actually had a staff dedicated to recycling. I'm talking about people that made 120k plus to organize it.
Not a fan of HP, but they kind of deserve the green ranking.
@Shamoononon: See "Marketing Expense" on the income statement to see how much the salaries of recycling staff are. HP wouldn't have them if there was not signifigant reputation enhancing value in them. It's important to remember that when you look at this list. Few companies are there because they actually care, nor should they, as it's not their primary job. #greenpeace
@Shamoononon: I shave my legs.: Must be something special in your locale, cause they sure don't do much dedicated recycling in the HP site I work at. #greenpeace
@spacetrig: Same here. Their support was great for me when my keyboard went bad.
I also like their screens since they're still glossy. I'd rather have my extra light be reflected off the screen, where then I have more control over it, than absorbed into it with an "anti-glare" coating on it.
Acting like criminals isn't going to get anyone to take you seriously... they're just going to frame you as loonies. Greenpeace, if you want to be taken seriously, conduct your protests with respect and dignity, within the rules set by law and society.
I wonder if Greenpeace is aware that HP donates huge amounts of money to Oceanic research - they are the main contributors to the MLML (Moss Landing Marine Labs) and MBARI (Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute). Both of which are very conservation oriented
@jamjen: That may be the case, but one good thing does not negate one bad thing. All politics aside, that's like smocking crack and eating a bran muffin to cancel it out. Doesn't work that way.
Its best to keep eating the bran muffin, but phasing out the whole crack thing.
@Hatin'SharkWeek_GitEmSteveDave: Exactly. The only reason that system works at all is because some do-gooders buy the credits and don't use them. But you are exactly right.
Here's how the last interaction I had w/ a Greenpeace Rep went:
Excuse me sir. Sir? Excuse me?
Yes?
Do you like Polar Bears? We have a petition to...
No.
No? You don't like Polar Bears?
No, I don't, and let me tell you why. You see, if I'm face-to-face with a polar bear I'm thinking "Oh shit!" and the bear is thinking "Lunch!" so why would I like polar bears?
Well sir, if...
Unless it were say, a Polar Bear rug. I could get behind that you know...
*sigh* Well, what about trees? Do you like trees?
Yes! I LOVE trees!
Great, we have a petition here for...
Especially when the trees are cut up and put in my fireplace with the Polar Bear rug in front of it. Man, I love me some trees!
(At this point the person walked away looking dumbfounded.)
The next block:
Sir, would you like to make a donation to Greenpeace today?
I'm sorry, I don't support terrorist organizations.
Wait what?
I really love screwing with petition people who make money from each signature they get.
@Lite: is on a boat.: IIRC the interview I heard with the guys who filmed that huge Earth Day Disney flick, a Polar Bear is the only bear that will eat a human if it comes across one.
As for the petition, they cut down a tree to make paper for the petition, which was printed with hazardous ink/toner.
@Lite: is on a boat.: On my college campus a year or so ago I had a PETA member try to tell me about how badly cattle or treated and I looked her straight in the eyes with a face calm as I could and I said to her "The pain makes them taste better." She had no response, I loved it.
@Lite: is on a boat.: Terrorist entity is a little much but indeed it is vandalism. I think for the most part a lot of companies do not call the police on stunts like this to avoid playing into their hand. They want to be arrested, it's martyrdom without the death. Being arrested for your cause is a badge of honor for these people.
As far as HP was concerned, let them put their message, put out their press release then rebutt with a fill-in the blanks statement and carry on. The less attention they get the less power they wield.
While raising awareness about environmental issues is important, Greenpeace needs to practice moderation to avoid alienating potential supporters. Stunts like this make people less likely to support legitimately useful Greenpeace activities. You can bet that HP is now going to ignore any future Greenpeace protests about hazardous materials.
@Hello Mister Walrus: You kidding me? I'd be more willing to send money the more direct action they take. There are plenty of people that already write letters.
@Hello Mister Walrus: Well look at PETA, they alienate people but at the same time have a very faithful and strong base of supporters. Although PETA is crazier than Greenpeace as they go as far as killing animals to "save animals". The day Greenpeace kills the planet in order to save it, they become just as crazy.

@NurseDave: Unfortunately, your opinion is not reflective of the whole population. There are more unfavorable comments in response to this article than favorable ones. Furthermore, people who post here tend to be young and liberal - i.e. they are already the sort that is more likely to support environmental activism.
@NurseDave: I for one am not kidding. I have no respect for organizations that look to correct their perceived problems with corporations by committing crimes. They lose any legitimacy or credibility when they ignore the rule of law. How about demonstrating that green processes can increase sales by generating good will and appealing to the consumer's sense of environmental responsibility? Oh wait, that would involve work and effort.
I don't go around doing whatever the hell I want because I fundamentally respect and value others, and the relative civility in which we coexist. Of course, if you (generic "you", not you personally) display repeated stupidity, that respect ceases.
A watch-dog operation should be held to even higher standards, not allowed to fuss and whine and vandalize in a public display of petulant defiance. My opinion of GreenPeace is already titanically low, and this only strengthens my arguments against them.
