"Hey, how many songs can you hold on that holographic storage disk?"

    "All of them"

    @admoseremic:

    "Plus the entire Jerry Garcia."

"Uh...you mean the entire Jerry Garcia discography?"

"No, the entire Jerry Garcia, all the capacity of his burned-out brain. And version 2.x of holographic storage can add in all of Up With People."

    "Oh. Wow."

"Of course, a floppy disk can do all that now."

"Data drawn through chemical reactions floats [as] if suspended in gelatin."
So, with this new storage technology, you'll get the most massive bang-for-buck with Jello-shots?

So if the data is stored via chemical reactions, what does that do to data degradation over time?

@thejackamo: I think that the chemical reactions are just for "printing" the information, not stored on chemicals.

Basically, the disc is still made of polycarbonate.

@SewerShark: No, I'm pretty sure the disc is actually filled with computer Jello. That wiggles. And dries up. You get about a week to keep your data.

But I'm not sure. I didn't watch the video. But then, what else does he have those goggles for if not to protect his eyes from inevitable Jello splatter?

@OCEntertainment: I think it started off as a transparent ooze of mindless, gelatinous monster in the shape of a 10'x10' cube. It normally lives in deep caverns, absorbing and digesting living matter. But once caught, it's sliced into neat discs but still able to absorb information until it hardens.

Why does it have to be "disc"?

@ripfire: because, in this kind of storage media (optical, or analog) is the best way to access or write non linear information.

Take a cassette tape, for example, the information is linear, you must fast forward, stop, rewind the tape, and that takes time to access the information.

In a disk, the media keeps rotating, and the head (the mechanical part who reads/write the info) can search any part of the media in a fraction of a second.

I'm not impressed. They've been talking about this since 1977.

As you can see, holographic storage has been around for years.

my guess it will be a another six years or more before we see any product using the tech. i heard of blu-ray starting around 1999 or so and if it follows the same time line it will be a while.

    ps
i have no idea what i am talking about

    Now the real work begins:

Finding a product name that could not possibly be offensive in any target market.
