At this point it's totally worth it to just grab the torrent yourself from somewhere. Many sites are community based with ratings and comment systems so you can get a rough idea of what is to be expected with your download.

If it doesn't work out, you should have a backup of your PC handy (if not you should be burned at the stake) in which case if something does go wrong you're probably in need of a format/reinstall anyway. #xbox360harddrive

The biggest problem is that you can never transfer anything to an Xbox HDD.

@GeekyWarrior: Sony seems fine about letting their HDD be probed and copied all they want. And you can copy files from an Xbox. I guess they couldn't be bothered to isolate core game/system files. Or ask game devs to do what Eden did and make save files Xbox specific, not HDD specific. #xbox360harddrive

@Pessimippopotamus: Right you can copy files from, but not to it. So hacked or stolen games don't surface. Also can't put hacked versions of games onto your HDD for online play.

But I would appreciate a a method to get media onto the HDD besides ripping CDs. Streaming over my network is a pain sometimes, especially because sometimes it has a problem finding some songs (probably some sharing conflict) and then it crashes.

But System specific saves would be murder, my buddies and I always just bring a drive for certain games so we don't have to lug the whole console around. #xbox360harddrive

Yeah, I got bit on that too. Then I ordered the cable from the same place when it didn't come with one. The cable literally arrived today, meaning that I haven't been able to do anything with it until now... and this cable doesn't come with the disk either. The packaging says to go to www.360kit.net , which has links to all sorts of shady RAR files... I dunno what to do here. Anyone got a disk for me? #xbox360harddrive

I did the same thing-- bought a HDD on ebay for $50. One of the forums I frequent has a thread where people pass around a legitimate HDD transfer kit, so I got it sent to me for shipping.

Additionally, I opened up the case for the new HDD, and it has the same WD hard drive that is in many of the 'roll your own HDD" tutorials. Regardless, the HDD transfer kit is what bogged me up too. Everything works quite nicely, and if you need the kit (or if anybody else does) let me know!

The one other problem you might face is that if that drive is NOT in fact a "legit" HDD, it may not work after the next Dashboard update. On Major Nelson's blog, he says all "unauthorized" memory units are no longer going to work once the big patch comes down. Sorry to say you might have to eat the cost of your current endeavor. #xbox360harddrive

This is exactly why I bought a PS3. The freedom to put in whatever 2.5" SATA Hard drive I wish. So for the actual value of a 500 GB laptop drive, I can put it in, rather than pay over a 500GB drive cost for a proprietory 160 GB drive. #xbox360harddrive

@ripfire: Depending on how much DLC you buy, it's one of the most important things about the system. My 80 (actually 74)GB drive has under 20 left. 8GB of Rock Band songs saved, games that save on to the HD, downloadable games and movies that you can save directly to the HD. There is a lot of content you can find to fill it up, the fact that you can buy cheap but large HD's for it....and that Sony provides the instructions on how to replace it makes it seem as if they care about the consumer more. $160 for what essentially costs MS under 40 is insane. #xbox360harddrive

@ripfire: I have a 200GB HDD in my PS3 and of the 180 I actually get to use I have 160 filled. I have a ton of movies (bought from PSN,) a ton of MP3s on there and about 12 PSN games. Plus you have your saved files, game data, installs, PS2 memory cards...

There is a huge reason to own a larger hard drive for both systems.

However I think today i've solved my HDD problem by setting up the PS3 with a media server. I can finally take off the movies and the songs but the other stuff will stay.

@00000000: Hehe. I like this reply the best.

Seriously though. I'm not trying to be a troll, but rather trying to bring out some of the reasons to justify a larger hard drive. It's just that I've been a long Playstation fan myself, but ever since PS3 came out, it seems like Sony has lost its vision. People say "it's for movies" "It's for my mp3" "it's for my linux" and so on. It's great to have these as extras, but is this really the future for a gaming console? Has it become an amalgamation of ubiquitous media? #xbox360harddrive

No, the fact is: Microsoft should not be selling basic products at such a ridiculous markup that you're forced to go to shady foreign websites just to STILL buy something that is overpriced.

Hands down, the wireless device, the hard drives, and the limited memory cards, are ridiculously overpriced, by as much as 10x.

The solution for the HDD storage issue is an easy one: Microsoft should allow for non-Microsoft hard drives and USB storage devices to work, out of the box, on the 360. It is ridiculous that I cannot plug in a USB hard drive and have the console recognize it and let me save my game data to it. I refuse to accept that these restrictions are to prevent piracy, because there is arguably an identical amount of piracy on the 360 as there is on the PS3, and online games have successfully routed out piracy for the most part with required updates and single-sign on connection systems.

I can understand charging $50 for a controller or something that only Microsoft can make, but for WiFi adapters, HDD's, and other devices that fundamentally work "out of the box" on a console, Microsoft needs to either restructure it's prices or allow for 3rd party expansion.

The HDD issue has already hurt the 360, but it's not too late to lessen the damage by allowing regular old hard drives to work on the 360. #xbox360harddrive
