@bpapa9013: Also wondering if this would work with dydns via DD-wrt? I'm guessing it could probably be finagled into working (probably independently of the HP software/WHS)...
"Mea culpa"= some sort of English/journalism major? = I still can forget your review of the Indy whip = so this is like a Drobo for more $$$$$ with limited storage with all sorts of HP software to make your storage robot super HP friendly + an HP slave?
@mruler360: 128 is lousy? It's not superb granted, but jeez, if 128 is beneath you, you better stick to vinyl or DAT tapes...
PS- Quoted from text above "As far as availability and pricing goes, the updated MediaSmart Server will be available for order on January 5, with the 750 GB EX485 selling for $600, while the 1.5 TB EX487 costs about $750."
@imTheKing: hrm... maybe I just have bad hearing. I can barely tell the difference between 128 and 320, and only on very good stereos that are turned up too loud.
@mruler360: "when not streaming over LAN, it transcodes your MP3s at a 128kbps bitrate" So if you lose the UI then you get the original (in my case higher) bitrates. It isn't a show stopper but it totally makes the UI unusable, for me it is just another networked storage server.
And I hear the difference between 128 and 320Kbs, like I can tell my mom from my dad. 128Kbz is barely enough for background music, but if you use music professionally you stick to wav/flac. 320Kbs MP3 is pretty damn close to the original, I probably fail in hearing differences in 50% of material. The playback volume plays an important role because the higher the bitrate of MP3, the better transient response you get (more 'punch and detail' by sharper volume changes). We can judge the transient response better when played back on original volume (which is way louder than normal listening!)

Presently wondering about the ability to upgrade it to real RAID (5 preferably) and maintain all of the stock server functionality?

Lousy bitrate for streaming to a stereo system though.
