    This makes sense given that fact that HP recommends customers with hard drive problems remove the letter P before sending the computer in for service.

    As an employee in a call center for HP, I see this kind of stuff alot.


    The script that is read to customers when the machines are serviced states that the machine is "Subject to a complete system recovery." for everything that requires the machine to enter a service center.


    In addition, the warranty paperwork for almost all current machines states this.

    @Majandra: Now I find that confusing. B/c if you say "I am going to recover your system", it makes it sound like you are saving it, not deleting. "Subject to complete system replacement" seems more accurate.

    Most people recommend removing your hard drive before sending it in. Except for a few, most of the laptops I have worked on only needed one or two screws undone and the drive slides right out. From my own experience, keep the battery as well. You don't want some unscrupulous tech/salesman switching your battery for a near dead one.


    In this case, there would be no need to access the Hard drive to verify the P key was working, and I'm sure they have spare drives floating around or could boot off a USB drive to verify the "P-ness" of fix.

    @Git Em SteveDave loves this guy->★: Have you ever worked on a iBook? Mine died due the infamous logic board failure syndrome, they fixed it, but it died again. I thought I would recover the hd to use as an external drive and was truly shocked at how deeply buried this thing was. Removing it was not that hard, just a lot of screws, (maybe 30 or 40) but I don't think I would have been able to reassemble it without taking a lot of pictures and notes!


    I don't think HP or anyone should wipe data, they should just deal with it. I know it's easier for them, but this should no be about them, it should be about the customer.

    @Gary_7vn: That's why I said "most". I had to swap the drives on two Vaio's, and I pretty much had to disassemble the whole machine to get to them. Meanwhile, on a Dell and a Armada I have, it's one screw to pull out the drive.

    In addition to backing up, I would remove most of the information on the laptop before sending it in.

    This is normal. Most repair centers would look at the OS and see all the crap people have running there and just do a restore.

    @Killtodie: Do they say they do before you send it in? Or do you request it? Maybe this is something he could have avoided if he talked with customer service?
