”Onkyo HT-S5100 Home Theater in a Box: 7.1 Surround and Acoustic Room Calibration For $579
Onkyo's best new entry level HTiB setup has a 7.1 surround is notable for having room correction tech. I'm pretty sure its rare to find a low end system that can adjust gain and delay on all channels to calibrate itself to a room's acoustics. The receiver included is the DTS/Dolby capable HT-R560, with 3 HDMI inputs, 130 watts per channel, and is Sirius satellite ready. The set up also comes with an iPod dock and a 290-watt sub. Not bad for $579 from a solid company like Onkyo. There are two lesser models:More »
Hummer HT2 Phone Is Smaller, Brighter, Even More Pointless than the Original
Fifty-thousand people compensating for something bought the Hummer HT1 phone. The new HT2 pulls the same trick as the H2 truck—it shrinks the original and adds a brighter coat of paint, with a fresh splash of asinine. In this case, even more so, because it seems to pack the same ho-hum specs as the HT1. At least the camo paint let you pretend it was invisible—now the sunny brick will make sure everyone knows you're a jackass. [Idnes via Slashphone]Round-Up: Sony 2008 Line Show Goodie Bag
As you may have noticed, Sony is currently planted in Vegas, announcing gear it withheld from us at CES. The biggest news is the arrival of the BDP S350 and S550, the first full-spec 2.0 Blu-ray players, complete with Ethernet and the long-awaited BD-Live compatibility. On Monday, Sony also gave us two new high-performance Cyber-shots, the W300 and H50. And just this morning they announced everything from a tiny dongle (for Bluetooth audio) to a huge rack (for A/V management), though no TVs or VAIOs. Here are the most interesting highlights:

Samsung HT-BD2 Home Theater in a Box Does Blu-ray in a Box
The Pitch: Samsung's HT-BD2 offers 7.1 speakers, 1,100 watts, HDMi 1.3, 1080p DVD upconversion, 1080p Blu-ray playback, an Ethernet port, and wireless rear satellite speakers for optimal cord invisibility.
The Catch: Although getting Blu-ray in a box with speakers that are "optimized" for the system is good, you may want to pick out a Blu-ray player (like a PS3) that works for you instead of going with an all-in one if you're more familiar with the format.

Onkyo Home Theater in a Box Has HDMI 1.3a, 10-inch Sub, 1080p DVD Player
Although this Home Theater in a Box (HTiB) doesn't have as many features as Onkyo's DTX-8.8, it still gives you an all-in-one solution for your entertainment needs in a relatively affordable package—and it's Onkyo's top of the line HTiB. The receiver in the HT-SP908 and HT-SP904 models has 7.1-channel audio, two HDMI 1.3a ports, 1080p output, and is XM/Sirius ready. Not only that, it also includes a 1080p upscaling DVD player, a 10-inch sub, and a remote-interactive iPod dock. Quite a nice package for $1099 for the 908, with the 904 coming in at $899 with slightly less features (like no HDMI and component upconverting). [Onkyo]
LG Chocolate HT972TR Home Theater System Looks Like an Overgrown Cellphone
LG takes this 5.1 home theater-in-a-box (HTIB) deeper into Chocolate territory with this Chocolate HT972TR Home Theater system, hoisting its four surround speakers into a vertical arrangement that mimics the company's iconic cellphone line. Topping it off is a touchy-feely control unit for its CD/DVD player that's almost a spittin' image of one of LG's swank but clumsy Chocolate cellphones. Besides this clever and evocative imagery, the specs are about average for this category.

Hummer HT1 Phone Gets 9 Miles Per Gallon
Oh, look, a regular phone that's very expensive because it's got some car company's logo on it. This time it's a Hummer, one of the more deplorable car brands out there, and it's got the great "feature" of having a camo finish on it. If you're in a jungle, it'll make you look like you have a hole in your head when you're talking on the phone! Good luck getting cell service in the jungle, though. That's a conundrum right there. LG HT752TP and HT702TN: New Ninja Announces Home Theater Systems or Something
LG keeps trying to blind the world with their latest models, even when they are not holding phones. This one is holding some kind of Stargate pyramid model made of aluminum, the LG HT752TP. Their latest home theater comes with HDMI, DivX compatibility, electrostatic buttons guaranteed to drive you mad, a USB host port to connect to storage devices and a Virtual Sound Matrix system that can simulate 10.1 sound using its 5.1 speakers. How, do you ask? I don't care, she says so and I take her word for it. The HT702TN does more or less the same, with 700 watts of power.

Sony's Sub $500 Home Theater Packages: HT-DDW990 & HT-DDW790
If $500 is too much to spend on your home theater needs (and face it, we can't all splurge as much as we'd like to) Sony's new 5.1 systems, the $300 HT-DDW990 and the $200 HT-DDW790 will better suit your budget. True audio snobs will frown on them, but these modest packages should do alright in small apartments, the HT-DDW990 was even fitted with 900 watts of power and 2 HDMI inputs. Neither can rival the 7100DH nor are they XM friendly, but they'll give you surround without putting a hole in your wallet. The DDW790 will be out in March while the DDW990 will debut a few months later in May. More »
