    The Rhodium looks pretty sweet, but the back looks like an xbox 360 hard drive. I like the idea, but there are plenty of folks who would probably cry havoc over such an insinuation.

    Wow. Another piece bashing WinMo when we finally are seeing hardware that meets the promise that this platform has always held.


    Bashing WinMo is like saying that Ferraris suck because you have to learn how to drive stick and can't carry four people. This is a phone for people with better than a GED. Everyone else just get a Jitterbug and marvel at its ease of use and intuitive interface.

    @glinden9: Knowing the interface's ins and outs is not the same as enjoying it, and no way is using Windows Mobile similar to a good standard transmission.

    @glinden9: Errr no? winmo is NO Ferrari. Ferrari is one of the preetiest cars out there, winmo sure as hell is not a pretty OS, it is functional, expandable and all that, but not pretty. One thing they do have in common is that both are not for the masses, I will give you that..

    whats wrong with windows mobile... im pretty sure its going to own the cell phone market in a few years... apple is lockdown to hard... Android is too open for most users... and blackberry is kind of going out of style

    @purple-pillows: The iphone will probably continue to be jailbroken. The App store is a heavily managed but it hasn't stopped people from using it. Android is still fresh meat so give it some time to season. Judging from the sheer number of people Cuckoo for Crackberry I don't think it's going out of style anytime soon. The only questionable one in the bunch here is WinMo. I don't think I would bet on it dominating the market unless MS starts giving it away for free.


    And even then I'd still have my doubts...

    @Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: I cant help but think cell phones are going the way of "pocket pc"... people will use the most capable OS that they are familar with... most people know windows and once the smartphone or COM takes over the market WinMo will be up there with Android and Apple OS...


    you have to remember people who read giz arent your typical consumer/user... your mom or girlfriend or friend who uses his work email as private email is

    Each phone OS has its own market. Not one is better than the other. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, while in some categories they are equal. There are many reasons that i will never own an iPhone or BB or Android phone. WM is perfect for the tweaker that i am. Not to mention, HTC makes the G1, so should ANdroid mature, i can just install that on my HTC device.


    The iPhone managed to get more people on to smartphones. This in turn caused the drafting effect, causing WM makers to tailor their phones more for consumers, which has helped WM quite a bit, as they are still gaining a good amount of marketshare, considering they are on the OS they are on. BB is also doing the same thing. This war will never end.

    @diabolusunknownTheSecond: Oh I agree. Obviously it's not just limited to phones and their respective OS's either. Every market has it's share of products that have advantages & disadvantages. These items appeal to a niche group of consumers, some widespread, others never gaining more than a basic foothold in the marketplace. It definitely says something when Apple can release a phone and watch it rise quickly to be a dominate player in the span of a year. Meanwhile Windows Mobile has had several years head start but still ranks below RIM, Apple and Symbian.

    I've been running DCD's 3.2.6 rom on my Mogul for months now with very few problems. In fact, my phone has been running so smoothly that I have decided to hold off on upgrading to the Touch Pro.


    PS PPCGeeks.com is another great rom community, even if they mainly focus on CDMA devices.

    @Selcouth14: Add 28 for the answer: Yeah, I figured that Giz would have known about (and been occasionally hyping) XDA off and on for several years by now.


    I think this is only like the second article I recall seeing that mentioned anything about xda...

    ppcgeeks and ppckitchen rule for cooking your own custom rom.


    WinMo 6.1 on a PPC6700 doesn't compare to the Touch Pro, obviously, but it's a hell of a lot better than what it'd be otherwise.

    I've been running Kavana's 6.1 ROM for my Dash, and it's been nearly flawless. Gave me the ability to read SDHC cards (original ROM couldn't), added more apps, and they even included a bit of overclocking, too.


    on a side note, when did T-Mobile ever carry the Diamond? How did I miss that?

    I've been getting roms from XDA for a while.


    Word of warning to those new to flashing roms: read up on instructions first to avoid bricking your phone or installing a radio you don't want. All the info is out there, if somewhat scattered.

    @ZetaCrossfire:

    I'm assuming it's the same for the other HTC winmo phones as my HTC Titan, but you have to install a bootloader program before you do this. If you have this bootloader program installed you can always put the phone into bootloader mode and install a different ROM. So it's relatively safe.

    @vkewalra: The boot loaded is not a program that you have to load, it is a built in system state, sorta like going into the BIOS on a PC...

    I've never directly used a Titan, but I have updated ROMs on MDA, WING, TILT, DIAMOND, and several cross carrier derivatives of those phones, and I have NEVER needed to install a boot loader. Just power down, hold the camera button and power up (while still holding the camera button) and you'll pop right into the three color boot loader.

    actually, juicy's rom over at ppcgeeks for cdma based touch dimaonds/pros is really good. it stick to the stock rom as closely as possible.

    @Anonymoose: There are dozens of roms on XDA that are basically different stock ROMS with all of the carrier bloat-ware stripped out.


    Don't know if I have ever seen any CDMA ROMS on XDA tho...
