I think alot of people overlook the fact that on WM devices, as outdated as the OS appears to be, you can still load a shitton of free software from the web, you have a massive catelog of apps from WM2003 that all run fine. Plus its as easy to pirate software on a WM phone as it is on Windows, vs trying to jailbreak an iphone.
You guys make it sound like WM will kill one of your pets. With the touchflo, most regular consumers will rarely even see the OS underneath all that skinning, and it works very well.
@Scazza: This is 2009, I think most regular consumers at least somewhat interested in this part of the market will have played with an iPhone. They would NOT confuse this phone with an iPhone or the Pre. Not even close.
Trust me, I'm a tweaker and I love WinMo for the factors you mentioned, however to say that their 'skinning' is a substitute for the complete reworking of what a mobile OS can be is unfounded.
@Joshua Pacada: I completely agree, its not a good substitute, but it is certain useable for most regular consumers. HTC, as a hardware company, have made a fairy nice skin that runs great (check out other skinning apps for WM, see how shit they run).
However, my point is that everyone hates on WM without checking out some of its unique features that even now platforms like andriod and iphone don't offer. Also dont think this is a dig at either of them, I own an iTouch, and i love some of the apps, but having to pay for anything worthwhile, when I can DL for free similar stuff on WM is kinda annoying.
wow. that's pricy, especially for a winmo phone that comes loaded with 6.1! good that they tweaked it so much with touchflo-3d. the old touch diamond was really really hard to use.
And i don't see it as that big of a deal that they removed the front facing camera, because who would you talk to? noone else has video-conferencing capabilities (on their mobiles at least). is talking with ONLY audio really that terrible?
@Ktk: Screw TouchFLO, if you're going to install a custom ROM just install WinMo6.5, the ROM "Mighty6" is completely stable and stoopid fast on a Sprint Touch Pro...
I think people need to understand Microsoft's strategy when it comes to WinMo (and a lot of its business). Microsoft has said that it believes more in expanding the user base instead of just converting existing users. Hence, it aims heavily at emerging markets like India, China, as well as Europe.
A similar strategy was employed during 2002-3. Apple was running the "Switch" campaign which got a lot of press but, after a year, it was discontinued after Apple lost marketshare. This wasn't because Apple sales were down; more people were buying PCs than Macintosh computers during that time (an argument can be made that at this time Microsoft and Apple were to some degree in competition in pre-Boot Camp days). Apple was trying to convert (PC) users instead of creating new users.
We're not going to see a lot of phones here because this isn't where the fight is. It's in China and India.

The new TouchFLO can be installed on TP1 with a hacked ROM anyways.
