It's good to see Joel Johnson bylines on Gizmodo again, he never fails to flex a little lingual muscle.

    - Nice Knife shout out, that album would be the nuts underwater.

As a Divemaster in Monterey I can say that this review isnt necessarily 100% accurate.

For someone with no cold water diving experience you need far more than 2 dives to even become comfortable with the added gear (thicker neoprene, much more lead, more exposure protection) than you would have tropical diving. Of course you were task loaded, you would have been without the iDive. When I fun dive, I very easily maneuver my 1500 lumen can HID light, my digital camera, and a spare air/stage bottle with little to no impact on my task loading. That however is because not only am im comfortable in this environment im comfortable with all that gear. As I tell people, you need at least 5-10 dives with any new piece of equipment before you are used to diving with it. From dry suits, to camera's etc. The last thing you want to do is jump into something with un-necessary task loading where you feel uncomfortable. This is how people get hurt. In watching your video you look somewhat frustrated and certainly not at ease just by listening to your breathing rate.

Another Divemaster buddy of mine has one of these and hes allowed me to borrow it. I love it, didn't experience the volume problems you mentioned but everyone's a little different with pressure equalization.

Out of curiosity did you do as suggested in the manual and run it at 90 minutes on full volume before the first use? IIRC theres other conditions where you have to do this as well... I think its after going to altitude (flying) etc.

In the end id enjoy having one of these myself, but for now theres other pieces of gear in front of that purchase.

Well now I guess I'm going to have to go buy and smoke an entire carton of cigarettes to see if your claim is factual.

Bud could have used this in "The Abyss". Would have been much easier to type on that what he was using. I'd make a mock up, but my copy of "The Abyss" is at home. Damn!

i can see how this would be attractive to a lot of people. i, myself, love the combination of water and music. something about the bobbing and the floating and the swaying -- it's like dancing with no effort. back in my day, i would have to sing to myself (in my head) during main sets, but jamming out in the water is really much better than most would anticipate.

i am assuming this bad boy will work a touch as well? and what did you use to shoot the underwater video?

Great article, not for the gear, but for the wonderful mental pictures you painted in my mind. Nicely done.

PS - you'll never catch me below snorkel depth.
