Forget about justifying Windows vs Mac - the commercials themselves just make Apple look out of touch since a lot of the issues they like to pick at were solved a decade ago, or are worse on the Apple side. :/
(I use both... they're about comparable, give or take a few points.)
The problem with the commercial is that it's bull. Microsoft was far superior to Apple in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. To present a commercial that portrays every Windows release as some sort of failure is quite false. While switching to ME from 98 or to Vista from XP was a bad experience for many people, I don't think most of Microsoft's customers were disappointed by upgrading to XP from ME, just as they won't be by upgrading to Win7 from XP or Vista.
@edwardbuttersworth: I was working in a newsroom in the early 90s, and we figured out after a few hours that nobody was getting any email. I checked the Mac that had the email server running on it and there was a modal dialog box from a different application sitting in the middle of the screen. Every application was on hold, waiting for someone to come by and select "Yes" or "No" to something completely inconsequential.
Windows NT, at the time, offered preemptive multitasking. I'd call that superior. #appleads
@PunditGuy: Windows NT in the early 90's, which was a networking/business focused side product that lacked a great deal of the user-end experience that even '95 and '98 featured. NT was comparatively solid, true, but it wasn't made for the end-user. It was made for the IT guy. #appleads
I think we're all agreeing. Windows WAS the better OS in the 90s, as development on Mac OS 8 was stalling, Windows 95 next to System 7 was no comparison. My point was that it still wasn't perfect, and that a lot of the problems still persisted.
Whether this give this ad merit is up to you, but I still see it as just that: an advertisement.
If I were to pinpoint the time when OS X began to lead I would point to 2005 with the release of Tiger. A year later I bought my first Mac. #appleads
@UnderLoK: suck it, windoze loser! haha, you smell like poopoo! your OS blows, just like your mom!
seriously, windows 7 will never stack up to OS X. it's plain and simple an inferior platform with less usability for the average user. i'm not talking about über-geeks who want to be able to skin their whole computer and OS to look like the matrix here, i'm talking about your mom (again), or the average office drone. the arguments for using windows are losing ground every day, and the people who cling to it are just doing it out stubbornness more than anything. all of my geekiest "PC" friends have switched to mac (and were disowned by their other "PC" friends for it), and would never go back now. whenever someone tries to show me what's so great about windows, they're always like, "see, it can do this so much better/faster than mac, wait, no, like this, see... oh shit, hang on a sec. damn. nevermind."
@Benjamin Posch: People like you are why I wish an IQ test should be issued on anyone who wants to obtain Internet access. Can't log on until you prove you aren't a... hmm... so many words for people like you.
I've owned a Macbook Pro, and an iMac, and guess what I use now? Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
Everyone else in this thread has been so civil, having a discussion and respecting peoples opinions. Then, one person remarks on your comment and you freak out with childish insults.
"Your mom!" - Mac Fanboy
Real intelligent, and it's about noon now so go take your nap. #appleads
@RoboticSpacePenguin: Yea, but it's Friday we need something to bitch about. Yesterday's OSX/Windows bout was weak... :D
@uandme1019: Obviously that's because Windows isn't fluent in Japanese, it's fine in English...
@Benjamin Posch: If they were real geeks they would have faster PCs hackintoshed so you're obviously telling stories. No self respecting "geek" would pay more for slower hardware unless we are talking about a laptop where size/weight is a concern.
People can run whatever they want, but in all that text you didn't make one valid point, you just spent your time talking about PR bs.
I love my MB, but it does the same stuff my other computers do so what exactly is the point? For a laptop they are great if only because of the size, weight, and multitouch.
As far as my Mom goes... Before she died last year she had been using a 5 or 6 year old Dell and didn't have any issues. Hell it even had a wireless card in it to share the internet connection with their laptop and that too worked flawlessly.
A computer is a computer. Macs break as well as Windows PCs, but when you have so many more Windows boxes, it makes more noise.
@That-One-Person: how exactly do you issue an IQ test ON someone? and what's about being civil? i get a smartass remark to my completely legitimate opinion, i post a smartass reply. that's how it is in the real world, which you would know if you would stop playing WOW and get out of your mom's basement every once in a while. the "childish insults" were a joke about his childish "the adult are talking here" remark. if you can't see that i was simply responding in kind, you are a... hmm... so many words for people like you. #appleads
@UnderLoK: firstly and in all seriousness, i'm sorry for your loss. losing a parent ain't easy. hang in there.
as far as the slower hardware myth that so many people love to spout, it's been disproved long ago. benchmarking isn't always something to go on because mac software uses the hardware differently than windows, which i assume you already know since you use both. real world tests show an altogether different story to the one you're telling. and of course it depends on the 3rd party software you're using, mac is slower in some things because they weren't written for mac using all the benefits of writing for OS X, but rather simply ported and tweaked from an existing windows app.
hackintosh? really? yeah, i know people who are car geeks, but they don't all mod them down to the rims. no one knows those hackintosh guys, simply because they're in the basement all day, building their hackintosh.
(big breath)finally, windows doesn't work as well because of the myriad of 3rd party hardware out there, that simply can't always work together the way it should. no one is perfect, and so something gets missed, and the driver doesn't get written to work with another hardware that's installed, and bang, meltdown. macs work better and last longer because they keep a lid on how much modding you can do on system relevant hardward, and for good reason. it's simply a matter of fact. #appleads
@Benjamin Posch: Hey, DO NOT overtake my thread and post your nonsense. I use Snow Leopard. I use Windows 7. I like both of them. Your comments were/are stupid and childish. And don't start with the "he started it" crap.
@UnderLoK: This troll isn't worth your time. It would be nice to have a thread without any vicious remarks from either side. We had a good start, but there will always be people who have to prove something. I mean, why try to sell us on an OS we already have? I use SL daily, and I assume you do also.
Its just me, or Apple seems a bit desperate on this ads?
#1 computer in public satisfaction? WHAT? Since when?
I'm not saying that macs suck, but, COME ONE, can't you be more smug than that? In the next commercial, Justin will tell you that macs get you laid. #appleads
@SewerShark: It's based on the American Customer Satisfaction Index study done every year by the University of Michigan. Apple has come out on top 6 years in a row, and holds the record for the highest score ever.
I don't see what Apple has to be so smug about. The Snow Leopard launch was a debacle. People's programs and periferals stopped working. Even the iPhone OS 3,1 update was a hot mess. Comma mode, my roomate had to get a new phone after that update.
Then again I'm one of the few people on earth who didn't hate Vista. So what do I know. #appleads
@F. Jay Ver: do you realize how many computers that guest glitch affected? hardly any.
And i didn't have any problems with 3.1
and if you liked vista then you're obviously an advanced user that was able to fix some or most of it's flaws. Nothing like the general public.
Apple has a ton to be smug about.. rapidly gaining market share. their best quarter ever. sky rocketing stock. the best phone in the world. the best laptop in the world. the best os in the world. come on.. seriously.. wake up. #appleads
@LostAtoll: It's great that "you" didn't have any problems, because plenty of others did and if you had been paying attention, it wasn't just the guest user issue.
Vista was fine once SP1 hit pull your head out of the sand. Just because it's an "Apple" doesn't mean it's problem free, it's still a computer so quit pretending it's all sunshine and rainbows, leave that to the PR guys who get paid to believe it, you should know better. #appleads
@akashhhhh: UAC was fine? Where is the "I know what I'm doing mode?" Gimme 'sudo su'. At least OSX is built on Darwin. As soon as Flash 10.1 for Linux is out it'll all be over. #appleads
@UnderLoK: I never said apples were problem free. But I am saying there's no comparison to windows. Seriously. Windows is a JOKE to anyone fluent in mac os x. #appleads
Just wondering, PC stands for Personal Computer, and what does MAC stand for? I would think a MAC is a PC, since it is a personal computer nonetheless. And please stop bashing each other, just because they prefer using something that you don't. Just my 2 cents.
*sigh*
Exactly what I expected from Apple. Instead of the mature advertising method of "Hey! we got this! its cool! Buy us!" they are always "Well they suck! Don't buy them!"
Can't they have one effing ad that actually talks about the OS and its features, instead of being arrogant douches? It's this same attitude over and over that makes me despise that company.
Sure, Microsoft is no angel either, but their "I'm A PC" ads were a brilliant reversal of what Apple considered derogatory, and made it into a wide range of users being proud to be a PC.
They just released some new ads called "7 second tips" or something of the sort, very short, sweet, and to the point about FEATURES of Windows 7, not stupid attacks at Mac.
This whole schpeal resembles an elementary school playground. With MS chillin on the swings telling kids how they can totally jump off the swing and that they have a holographic Charizrd. Then Apple runs over and tells everyone MS wet its bed last night, so they should play with Apple instead.
Anyone else find the Apple commercials rather distasteful? Maybe Apple could start putting out commercials showing how amazing they are not just talking about being amazing or how their dad is better then your dad etc. Direct marking attacks only say to me (a consumer) how weak their own product is. Douchebags. #appleads
I believe that Mr. Long hit it on the head with "We are a commercial." Thank you sir for reminding the viewers exactly why they shouldn't put a great deal of credence in something like this.
Bottom line is this, Apple makes great products which are a good fit for many people, but if all they can do is take cheap shots at the competition that's not exactly a strong argument for their computers, is it? Please show a little maturity guys and take a page from Microsoft. They're actually showing off something new, and not just pushing smarmy, misleading propaganda.
Actually, I've heard that Apple did have a campaign like that all setup and ready to go, but then someone logged into that computers guest account, and the whole thing just up and vanished. Guess thats why we're getting more of the same. #appleads
Try as you might, there is no hiding the errors in Snow Leopards launch, but seriously who cares? Grow up Apple, before your smugness turns into douchiness. #appleads
these commercials do make a valid point, though.
It is not an easy task to upgrade from XP, if you want to save all your data.
I would say, about 25-30% of the home machines we sell and about 60% of the business machines we sell all want XP instead of Vista. NOTEThose are just the numbers our store does, and may or may not represent the rest of the known world, but thems the numbers I gots to work with.
Those are significant numbers. A lot of people will be unwilling to upgrade because they don't have the time, the patience, the extra drive to store data or just don't think the effort is worth it.
A lot of business that still use XP won't upgrade because of the cost in time that it will take.
I really think MS made a large mistake by not figuring out how to do a direct upgrade from XP.
Sure, you would have to update drivers and programs, but that would leave data in place, removing a large barrier from the upgrade path.
I'm a hardware repair man, and the software I know is Apples, but it seems logical to me that if you can upgrade from XP to Vista, and from Vista to 7, you should be able to upgrade directly from XP to 7.
But, what do I know. I've only been in IT for 20 years. #appleads
@ottermann killed Kenny: So you're answer is to purchase a new computer instead of upgrading, then migrating stuff into that, and buying a whole new set of software? In the end, people will end up investing some time no matter what.. #appleads
