Last week we saw some big wave activity in the Pacific. Some said the storms would develop some of the biggest waves in decades.* Here's some footage of nut jobs surfing said waves on Jaws, in Maui.

This is from the 7th of the month, when our guest blogger and surf gear experimenter Laird Hamilton was out. From his blog, he said a few newcomers were getting thrown up on to the rocks with their jetskis and boards. The waves were 25 foot, as rated in Hawaiian terms, which means 50 feet tall on the face.

These videos were shot using a Canon 5D Mark II, a 70-300mm USM lens and a Zoom H4n & Redhead windscreen. Slow motion was done in Premier CS4, but I can imagine how much better this'll would have looked if the 5D's 60FPS firmware was used. [vimeo via nick bilton]

*They turned out to be overhyped a bit, but the waves were big enough to hold the Eddie Aikau contest in Waimea Bay, which has only been held 7 times in 25 years.

<![CDATA[Girl Sent 35K Text Messages in a Month...Twice, But It is Nowhere Near the Record]]> The story of a 13 year old girl sending 14,000 text messages in a single month got a lot of press, but truth be told, that figure is actually fairly low.

For example, Sprint has confirmed that a 14-year old Florida girl sent / received around 35,463 text messages in a month on two separate occasions. That works out to 1,182 a day. As sad and depressingly impressive as that is, those numbers don't come anywhere near the Guinness record. Apparently, that "honor" is held by a man...a GROWN man by the name of Deepak Sharma. He managed to send 182,689 messages in a single month—about 6100 messages a day (or 4.2 messages a minute). Yeah, that is insane. Good thing we have unlimited text plans—even though it is most likely a ripoff. [Herald Tribune via Fark Image via Flickr]

<![CDATA[Most Expensive iPhone App Champion: MyAccountsToGo Costs More Than an Unsubsidized iPhone]]> At $449, MyAccountsToGo Dynamics GP and MyAccountsToGo SAP BusinessOne are the most expensive iPhone Apps available as of right now. It's under the Finance category and is designed for sales, marketing and finance people to access their transactions, statements, and other corporate terms that we have no clue about. Since the most we know about "business" is "business time", we can't say whether or not the $449 is worth the cash, but we do know that you should buy both apps and just make it an even $898. There's a free version if you want to know what the excitement's all about. Just don't accidentally buy the paid version.

<![CDATA[The Annoy-a-tron]]> If you've got a professor, a co-worker, or sibling that you really, really hate, this Annoy-a-tron is the perfect thing to drive them up the wall. The small-ish gadget fits discretely under desks, in bags, or in closets and lets out a short beep in 2 to 8 minute intervals.

We had a cellphone run low on battery and beep every few minutes, and since we have about 57 cellphones here you can imagine how hard it was to identify the source. This is that idea taken a step further—just enough to drive someone batsh*t insane.
